Modern home hideout sits on forsaken volcano like Star Wars rebel ship

Perched on a slope of what is arguably the tallest mountain in the world (Mauna Kea), and accessible only by 4 wheel drive, Musubi House doesn't rely on city grids, but instead is powered by the sun and captures all of its water from a huge trapezoid sloped roof.
Deep in the heart of paniolo (cowboy) country and surrounded by cattle ranches, this glass, steel and concrete home (designed by innovative architect Craig Steely), it was built to protect against strong winds, but opens up completely to an interior courtyard for sheltered outdoor living.
“You are like being on a ship here right because you're dependent on yourself, the electricity, the water”, explains contractor and off-grid designer Scott Dale. It's the same as a sailboat in the middle of the ocean”.
The base of the home is a giant triangle with one angle a sunken living room and rest of the home blurs the line between indoor and outdoor with floor to ceiling glass doors that open onto an open-sky courtyard. Even the bedroom and bathroom are translucent and the shower is completely outdoors with lava-rock tile. Since normally the owners, Stacy and Guy Brand, are here alone there’s no need for privacy, though the guest bathroom does have an opaque door (though only a macrame barrier wall).
The kitchen is off-grid, but doesn’t make sacrifices. There’s an induction cooktop and full-sized electric stove and dishwasher. They used high-efficient drawers for refrigerator and freezer.
The entire home is crafted, from the barrel-shaped skylights to a whitewashed pine ceiling that extends outdoors. “It's all skinned in this beautiful pine that we've whitewashed. This is a boat-builder's dream because all the lines line up from the outside to the inside. The same craftsmanship that goes into building a ship is the same craftsmanship that went into building the ceiling.”
Special thanks to architect Craig Steely www.craigsteely.com/project/m...

@@danielwahlstromm.d.415 if you re-watch that conversation you can see from the 360 drone footage that he is correct. the actual building walls are bounded in an equilateral or isosceles triangle shape with rounded corners. Although I agree that the overhead footprint of the building is a kite.

Yeah this is insane... I had gone for a different color and materials palette but in essence, this is what I want too. Nothing excessive or pretentious. I dig it. I had done a little wind generator, maybe, and you could definitely have a second tank higher up and use the excess electricity on good days to pump water up and then have a gravity fed system. Bit more pricey but it'd act like a gravity battery. A little wood fired oven/cook top combo would give you that extra level of resiliency if the lights did go out one day (could be easily hidden in a corner or in a bult in or something like that to not spoil the vibes). Just have a pile of wood ready in the garage. Love the Konstantin Grcic bar stools. Very nice. Again, awesome build. Very very cool...
@snowstrobe

Was my thoughts too... A wind turbine (VAWTS are silent) would probably ensure plenty of power. And a gravity fed water-tank would be more efficient use of pumps.

The whole _Off Grid_ thing is utter nonsense anyway - they're not growing all their food up there so carrying some propane up on one of the many provisioning excursions would be well within scope! Firewood needs an entire infrastructure too, even IF they were processing it all on site - which they aren't capable of!
@mysterioanonymous3206
@mysterioanonymous3206 4 ай бұрын
@@dancarter482 I think you confuse total self sustainment with being off grid. Grid is only referring to the electrical grid - nothing more. I think we'd all agree that a modern lifestyle is only possible in a networked, connected world, be it internet or medical care, but in Hawaii they do have electricity outages and being somewhat self sustained, say for a week or two or even a month is a very valid concern. Also, they just don't get public utilities there (sewage, drinking water, gas, and obv grid electricity, trash collection, that sort of thing). You simply have to be self sustained to a certain degree if you want to live there. Also, islands are notoriously expensive to supply so solar and such can make financial sense too in many cases.

I agree, the green pastures and the nature with the atmosphere and the bird song is just a whole other experience. I haven’t lived like this, but I believe it would definitely be grounding. You would feel so connected to the land around you. I especially like the lack of light pollution, the sky at night looks phenomenal and I could see myself in that atrium at night for hours looking for Andromeda or Sirius.

@@bethhubbs9937I feel like that too. Although a view of water feels therapeutic to me, it’s nice to be able to see a body of water and the waves and hear the sounds. It could even just be a lake, just something where you can see the water flowing.

You can see the growing trend to hide the kitchen. Back in the day, kitchens had their own rooms out of sight from the guests. Then came the great room trend, displaying the kitchen as the centerpiece for entertainment. Now people want to hide it. I bet future designs will have separate kitchen rooms again. After all, practical kitchens are to prepare food with clutter everywhere, not for display.

@@slynn5138 Having your kitchen in your living room, as is the style of today is absolutely nonsensical. They are two very different rooms with different functions. I agree about the sound of rain in general but the specific volume and quality of the sounds at 27:39 from this particular roof seem harsh to me. At another point in the video the contractor and tour guide demonstrates an unintended echo at one place. Perhaps that is related and is amplifying the raindrop strikes on the roof.
