That’s a problem in the Air Force in general. If you want career advancement, get promoted to high ranking positions, etc, you got to be a pilot.

@@aerohk I disagree. Maintenance and other jobs promotes based on their career field which leads them into supervisory roles that then translate into higher and higher ranks. I agree that a chief will most likely never hold political roles like the chief master sergeant of the Air Force, but everyone has the chance to reach their respective ranks.

AWACS aside, when I was in the USAF, there were airplanes that would come to the base I was on that had some of the craziest antenna configurations you could ever imagine. I once asked a Pilot, "Hey Sir, what is that airplane used for?" ....."Weather observations". was all he said.

It was not damaged badly as was exaggerated in the media. The plane had no visible burns or damage in satellite photos. They flew this plane back to Russia. If the dome was damaged, it can be replaced faster. Electronics on board are more complex and harder to replace but there was no on board fire.

When we spoke to USAF E-3 aircrews, the USAF thought of using the same engines as the KC-135R. The most recent information is using Boeing's 737-800s, although smaller, but the upgrades in radar, antennas is vastly improved over the present E-3. The Aussies are flying that version of AWACS in their fleet.

12:33 - - *Aircraft carriers rely on the Northrop Grumman E2 HAWKEYE as their airborne early warning system (AEW).* 12:51 - - *Like the E3 - the HAWKEYE also boasts a large radar dome that allows it to provide valuable info about ships, aircraft + weather within the vicinity of an operation. It can even detect anti-ship missile attacks (with enough time to allow for emergency counter measures to be deployed.)*

@@kingofjamrock this thing flies around and tracks enemy aircraft hundreds of miles away in real time. it "lights" them up for your own fighter jets to recognize them with passive radars without giving up their own location , or for air to air missiles with passive radars to find their targets. satellites serve a very different purpose (reconnaissance and navigation or espionage mostly)
