It's nice to see that AWACS will be around until 2035. My first job out of college was a software engineer working on the AWACS project in the mid-70's. There were about 300 software engineers and about an equal number of hardware engineers all housed in one large building next to Boeing Field in Seattle. Our desks were lined up right next to each other; there was only about 3 feet of space between each row. We used a language called Jovial which was popular at the for developing real time systems. It was all done on IBM punch cards but there was an army of punch card operators who would do the typing of the program to the punch card machines. The onboard computer was based on 3 parallel IBM computers with core memory and high speed rotating drums. The radar system was an advance radar system that can declutter the environment well to provide ground targets; the hardware engineers were very proud of it. The software engineers just wanted it to work.

They used to fly the AWACS around here all the time. I live in Dayton Ohio by Wright Patterson AFB. I don't think they need them state side any more because all of our radar and threat detection is done through satellites and other systems. I'll never forget the big radar on the top as that's what always caught my attention. They have one at the Air Force Museum at the base too. If you like planes and have never been to the US Air Force Museum you need to go!

Ed, my first USAF assignment out of AFROTC was as a programmer/analyst in the 552 AWACW/AD at Tinker in 1982. Apparently we not only got our software from Boeing, but our office floor plans as well! I got to learn Jule’s Own Version of the International Algorithmic Language, IBM 360/370 Assembler, and JCL. Follow-on as a software instructor in NATO AWACS in the same languages. I don’t think I’ve heard anyone talk about JOVIAL since I left the AWACS world in 1991. Was great to read your comment.
@Errr717
@Errr717 3 жыл бұрын
@@ericbainter826 WOW how cool is that? Great to hear from someone else who was in the early AWACS environment. There were a bunch of AF officers who were embedded in the development team and moved from team to team to learn the system. They were slated to do the sustainment work after it was officially delivered. You might have worked with some of these guys. One of the languages I learned in one of my CS classes was ALGOL so transitioning to JOVIAL wasn't too bad. On my first week my team lead told me to write a biorhythm program to get my feet wet in the language. I still have the stack of IBM cards to remind me of my first programming assignment.

@@Errr717 Hi Sir, I hope you’re still around, since the post is a year old. - Regarding your SW development; ya’ll did an outstanding job! I joined AWACS way back in 1985 as an aircrew computer Tech (CDMT). I loaded the 9-track reel-to-reel tapes and initialized the IBM 4PI Mainframe. I actually really like 4PI; it beat the Soviets. - The Block 20/25 aircraft with nine “Weapons” controller consoles and monochrome green screens :-) - Fast fwd some 40 years; the US E-3 fleet is now Block 40/45, server/ GUI based, and more sensors and (what I call “boxes” to keep it generic). - Sir, You should be very proud of the system you (Boeing) created back then, and would be rather happy to see what the E-3 has grown up to be.

Если говорить о комплексах ДРЛО воздушного базирования такой мощности - то тут скорее всего только США и РФ могут конкурироваь . @@oscarspark2396 So your defensive plan is to jam the Sentry AWACS with the Krasukha then shoot it with the Kinzhal. Wow, I didn't know the US doctrine involves sending an unarmed radar plane into airspace defended by AA and jammers. I feel like you need to watch less Marvel movies and stop predicting battles.
