Where ibex great population is found but not one knows about that, because many years ago there are no people living in these area they left. I live eastern andalucia, we don’t have lynxes here but rabbit hunting is quite a prevalent activity. People own hunting dogs and get licensed for guns to play this sport :(

Australia cannot import lynxes into the environment because they would wipe out all small marsupials. Domestic cats have been bad enough.

Actually you get to see rabbits almost everywhere here in Spain. They even breed inside the roundabouts at the borders of some cities. You can see them by hundreds around the motorways (and some of them also spread like jam on a toast on the motorways)

@@larry-ny5yr The whole decline in rabbit species in Spain was caused by diseases brought from different countries. Not a good idea.

Theres some pros and cons to this idea. Pros are the lynx would have more prey and it would also help to decline the rabbit population in Australia. They are populating fast because they have no natural predators, introducing them to the lynx would be a good idea. Cons are the feral rabbits could introduce new diseases to the already low population of local rabbits.

​@@Angel_Gomez The Portuguese and Spanish Governments have been cooperating on this for decades. There are 4 centers in Spain and one in Portugal, and they 'exchange' lynxes - the one portuguese centre has mostly sent lynxes to Spain (of 75 cubs born in PT, only 14 stayed here) - which makes a lot of sense, with Spain being larger and having more lynx centres. I would guess in PT we probably still have to advance more on restoring ecosystems as well. I'm super happy PT and ES are cooperating on this, I hope this species thrives and our countries have healthier ecosystems ^^

Population of lynx in Poland is way higher than estimated. I live in village near forest, I'm hunter so I check the area near me regularly and have few trail cams (there are there mainly to catch ppl who leave trash in the forest and poachers) I am in close contact with many institutions that should care about lynx. I have multiple trail cam pics of different lynx (at least 3 different ones, one has damaged ear, one has distinct spot on face and one is missing piece of a nose). Yet nobody cares, nobody wants me to send in pics, nobody wants to give them gps collars to see where they live exactly. And I know few more ppl who live far away from me who have exactly same stories to tell The European lynx extinction in Poland is just pitty story made up to raise more money for charities, they are doing way better than media tells you

Beyond what this commentary portrays, more important than there being conservation efforts in both countries is to convey whats really going on, this program and the portuguese program are in practice one and the same, this kind of program needs a strong spirit of cross border cooperation for it to succeed. This is the main reason why this video portrayal of the conservation efforts around this animal is flawed, it' fails to convey the origin of the program's success. And don't get me wrong, Spanish people should definitely be proud of what is being portrayed but the importance of cooperation cant be stressed enough, it was essential to save the Iberian carnivores, the Iberian wolf is also a cooperation success story.

@@rmh3856 we responsible for most of extinctions back then Africa was the hardest place for us to survive in though. So we were never able to kill off any of Africa's animals. But it's because of our modern advancements and lack of knowledge that the lands of the world have suffered. Balancing the creatures numbers balances the environment and balancing the environment balances our survival.

Spain is way ahead of most European state for wildlife. I remember in Florida them telling us there were very few florida Panthers left when I was a boy. They were federally protected for years before. If you went in the woods back then, you would see tracts from time to time. Enough to know the estimations were way off. Now 40 years later, it pretty common to see tracts. I saw an Iberian lynx in national park of Europa in Asturias Spain. Didnt know it was such a big deal till I saw a sign that had the local animals. That park was the only place in Europe I found to have animals easy to see. A drive though the main road in the evening, I saw wolves and red dear. In the early morning, 7, 2 hours before most Spanish are out,(lol) I saw lots of red deer, the lynx and a couple pigs. Saw a ibex in the serria Nevada's mountains of Granada at like 530 am on a mountain road. Poblet outside Barcelona has a small park up a raven that I saw red deer and pigs. Overall Spain had more wild animals then all the rest of europe I went too and just like spain, I drove around and walked into places at prime time but saw nothing. Cats are the masters of stealth. They have been hunted to the point they avoid all human contact and often live in the farthest points from civilization. That along with the terrain and environment make counting the cats I listed so brutal to get into accurate count. Asturias is still is one of the least developed parts of all of europe. He ran as soon as he saw my car come around the corner. All the game in Europe are very spooked. If the see you or your car they run. Year of over hunting will do that. In America its a little different. We are over run by many species and in areas they are fairly tame.

They are incredibly important to keeping our fragile ecosystems in place. In Europe there’s not many big predators, unlike America, the biggest being the Eurasian bear, that does not hunt the kind of prey that overpopulates Europe (mostly small rodents) and next one would be the European wolf, these being much of a bigger threat to humans, cause they hunt in packs and can be very difficult to deal with, instead of a single predator. Lynxs are the perfect predators cause they mostly only prey on small rodents, by themselves and you don’t even have to keep many of them to deal with rodent overpopulation. The problem we are having is rodent populations are dying by themselves due to introduced illnesses and being prey to other predators. So the rodent population is low, making the predator population die.

Normally they do not mention that farmers used to poison and shoot at them until not so long ago, because most farmers are/were small game hunters, fortunately things have changed a lot and there is more culture around, publicly at least, no one brags about killing lynxs, eagles or bears, but they still go after the wolves in the centre of Spain, and later complain about overpopulation of wild boars ...

@@TheConspirateWarrior Eastern europe will tell you that the only animal thriving in wolf territory is wild boar. Wolves find them to big a challenge to hunt them by preference (deer or livestock are preferred).

@@hillockfarm8404 Maybe hunters in Eastern Europe have their own experience , I won´t argue over that but the truth in Spain is that boars prosper in areas where there are no wolves. BTW wolves do not cut the numbers of boars by taking on adults males, they do so by chasing females to the point of injury and taking as many piglets as they can in an opportunistic way, at least over here, I claim to know nothing about the situation anywhere else ...

Es cierto que hay más ejemplares en nuestro país (porque supongo que también eres española), pero es que se llaman linces ibéricos porque su territorio ocupa toda la península. En esta situación en la que están casi extintos es normal que se hayan concentrado en zonas más pequeñas, pero el bicho sigue llamándose igual y viviendo en los mismos sitios si dejamos de destruir su hábitat...

@Marina Mayo it is true that spain has more, because they have more space, but actually it even happens some times Portugal sending them to Spain, again, because they have more centers and space. Majority of the cubs born in Portugal are sent to Spain, for the reasons i already said. Also both countries have been working together for a long time as they should, because this is a problem not related to the borders of the 2 countries but a problem related to an animal that lives in both regions. So just with that, your arguments, for this pointless discussion go down.
