Ticketmaster is destroying live music. Their scam fees now cost as much as 78% of a ticket. They control the events, the venues, even the artists. There’s a movement pushing the Justice Department to take on their monopoly. Cory Doctorow breaks it down.

The whole music industry has been turned on it’s ear in the last 20 years. Used to be the tour was to promote record sales. Now, the tour is the way the band/label makes money. The costs and complexities of a touring production like Springsteen must be astounding. But Ticketbastards have nothing to do with that. They are the only game in town, if you want to see the band, you have to pay their fees. One of the reasons I haven’t gone to a concert in decades, probably never will again accept if the come to one of the Tribal Casinos, I think they do their own ticket sales. BTW, speaking of greedy, how much more money does Springsteen need? If he really wants his fans to hear/ see him perform, how about he not profit from the tour? Band and crew get paid, but the stars nothing.

I thought I would like to see Harlem Globetrotters many years ago at the Calgary SaddleDome but ticketmaster made sure there was no way out of the “convenience” fee, which was nearly as large as the ticket price itself. Live entertainment is only for rich people. I’ve been to the SaddleDome about 5x in my whole life & they have a plan to bulldoze it as soon as the pandemic is over. I think I’ll never be able to afford to visit any publicly-funded stadium.

Once upon a time, you could avoid the TicketMaster fees by shlepping to the venue and buying direct from the box office. But today the box office at the venue isn't really a box office, it's a TicketMaster outlet and all the same service charges apply. Like any monopoly, they control all sides of the equation. There is no escape. You either pay them or you don't go to concerts, full stop. They make sure that you have no third option.

Do you remember how that worked out for Pearl Jam though? They had a disaster of a tour where the only venues they could find were often outdoors and smaller than the size venue they had the ability to fill out with ticket sales. Some of their shows were cancelled due to weather, and sometimes they had to relocate shows at the last minute. And because these days musicians make most of their income from live performances, they lost out on a ton of money for their decision. And after all that, ticketmaster only got MORE powerful. Of course other musicians are just resigned to the fact that if they want to make money, they have to work with ticketmaster. I am sure they would love nothing more than to be able to get rid of ticketmaster.

@@StreakyBaconMan I forgot about their tour troubles. Yeah, it’s definitely an uphill war to fight. Ticketmaster claims the price hikes are to deter scammers but the majority of ticket buyers are actual fans trying to go to the show. I wish we could go back to first come first served at the venue, 1 ticket per person & scanning your ID to deter scammers if they try to pull something slick. Naturally a lifetime ban for the venue if caught & maybe they could be on some sort of concert venue ‘Banned’ list within each concert venue’s system.

that's what happens when companies control the government. in actual capitalism when shit like this happens its the governments job to step in. however we have reached the point where the companies control the government. capitalism is all but dead in America and has been replaced with corporatocracy. capitalism is the greatest economic system ever but its extremely fragile, it doesn't work if the government doesn't take action against the corporations. it also doesn't work when the government overregulates small business.

@@realyopikechannel capitalism necessitates infinite growth and we dont have infinite resources. Its the “best” system for accumulating wealth, but its not great at actually improving the material conditions of those around them. Capitalism has failed the global south and has only benefited the countries that were in an advantageous position to begin with. The US didn’t grow because capitalism is so good, the US became a super power because they were pretty much untouched by the war in europe

@@GotPoopInMySoup if thats your opinion you dont understand capitalism on a fundamental level. all it means is consumer choice and competition between companies. everything wrong with American economics comes when the government tries to mess with the free market through government led monopolies, why do you think our healthcare sucks? because the insurance companies get paid by the government so they have no incentive to be competitive and provide a good service. you can apply this logic to roads, public education, usps. literally anywhere there is a government monopoly and no competition you see failure. go watch john stossel. capitalisms means competition and when there is competition the consumer always wins. if a company has competition they have to be better than other companies to win you over to buy their products. when you only have one choice they don't have any incentive to do better. thats why private schools are better than public ones, thats why private owned toll roads are better maintained. the only thing the government is good at is wasting money.
@GotPoopInMySoup
@GotPoopInMySoup Жыл бұрын
@@realyopikechannel thats not what capitalism means, capitalism doesn’t own a monopoly on consumer choice. The barter system had just as much consumer choice as capitalism. And youre right, everything wrong with public services in the us is the result of THE US government, if you look anywhere else in the world you see countries that have outstanding public programs. If you want to know the real reason why public transport in the US is so bad, it’s because most us cities are built with cars as the focus. Go to new york and their rail system is excellent. When you actually invest in improving the infrastructure instead of trying to turn a profit, you create something that actually works. Look at the privatization of the rail system in the uk for example, its has become worse and worse over the years after thatcher let private companies handle it. Capitalism is based on the notion that the market fixes itself, but then why is the price of insulin here 500% that of a country with socialized medicine? It has absolutely nothing to do with the government’s coming in and everything to do with insurance companies and the pharmaceutical industry running a racket on US citizens. We could outlaw money tomorrow and absolutely nothing would fundamentally change, people would still exchange goods and services in exchange for what they need, its not a hard concept to follow.

The big name music artists have the power to control this. If they collectively refused to sign with Live Nation, AEG etc, or demanded certain parameters around ticket pricing, resale etc. or play at venues that have contracted their souls to Ticketmaster, Live Nation would be forced to play along or lose gigs to other smaller promoters. The problem is that artists get sweet sweet money from Live Nation-managed tours... and because there's so little money in recorded music anymore, no one's going to opt for a smaller pay cheque. It only takes a tiny minority of people engaging in anti-social criminal behavior to ruin everything. They try to convince us that giving food to beggars is illegal, but foreclosing on a family of 6 is totally reasonable behavior. We believe it. Why? Because for most of our formative lives we where told arbitrary rules handed down to us by our parents and punished for not following them. Rule of Law is all most people know and while they may understand that laws could change - they only ever feel that way about laws directly effecting their lives. Cognitive bias also blinds us to possible changes simply based on the fact that you as an individual can only care about so many things - your brain automatically ignores 99% of the information fed to you based on nebulous and ever changing focus and attention. For example, good kids follow the rules of football - bad kids break the rules and cheat. What do the rest of the kids do? Simple - they play the game by the rules to the best of their ability and if they break a rule and get punished, its a bad rule and should probably be looked at. The real problem child is the one who questions the very reason your playing the game (fun?) and realizes its not fun for them and decides to opt out. Issue is, the game isn’t for fun - its for control. Its so the adults can enjoy themselves while you are kept busy. Its so Brandon age 47 can feel good about themself as they mock you for not playing.

It is when artists go on tour is when they are in more control of their earnings. So if we boycott the concerts we are hurting the artists who depend on ticket sales to pay for production and themselves. I fully anticipate sales for that event to tank and the show ending up being cancelled. The same happened back in the 90s with Madonna's tour, we had tickets but the venue didn't sell enough seats to cover expenses and Madonna canceled her concert in BERLIN. Grateful Dead said that we are one of the few bands that can guarantee a sold out show, therefore by selling their own tickets that they can make sure tickets went to their fans since there was a number of tickets they cn buy and any type of duplicate orders were rejected... They would also have time frames when tickets could be purchased and whatever tickets that were left over at the time when ticket sales stopped, the remaining tickets would go to ticketmaster... I love seeing live music, but I shouldn't be forced to pay $20 or more in fee's on top of original face value due to corporate greed... Can't see any bands anymore without going through ticketmaster/ live nation... Britain refused to allow the merger between these two due to the monopoly it created for live entertainment... Yup. Time for me to quit going to shows. GA (lawn) tickets for Dead & Company at the Gorge recently went on sale. I wasn’t able to get them day of. Tried the next day: $800+ for two (two days) lawn tickets. I don’t think so.

As the dates get closer keep your ears open - Dead & Co frequently release additional tickets through their venues closer to the date. I hope it works out for you to make it to some shows this summer

I graduated HS in the early 90s and remember this seemed to start with the Eagles Hell Freezes Over Tour in '94 where prices started at $65, which was absolutely scandalous at the time when most major concert tickets tended to be $40 or under for regular seating. Twenty years later, we had floor seats for Taylor Swift's Red tour that cost around $200 each. A few years after that I was going to go see her in AT&T Stadium in Dallas for the Reputation tour - those same seats on the floor within about 30 yards of the stage were more than $1500 apiece - that's when I quit playing along and paying the extortionate prices. As I'm nearly 50 now, going to big concerts isn't a big thing for me anymore. I cannot stand Pearl Jam, but at least they tried to fight this cartel on their 95 summer tour.

I think I remember hearing something about that and I remember when it started getting crazy in the late 90s

Same thing is happening with the new Blink 182 tour. I'm pissed. My family is pretty well off, and even this is too expensive.

Check again the week of the concert. There will be plenty of ppl desperately trying to unload tickets. Prices will drop. They almost always do. AFI was $150 all year. Just saw them for $50. WELL worth it.

Such a sad story for Us all live music enthusiasts. Very discouraging. Fist Up with Bruce Springsteen, Pearl Jam, MPU & more for the face-off. We Salute You ! Keep Rockin' 🇺🇸 👍👍👍 🇺🇸

I don't go to concerts/big gatherings anymore because of chances of mass shootings, so no worries for me :). I only go to concerts when travelling outside of the US, and there's no Ticketmaster/Livenation there so no unjustified prices.

I remember this starting with Pearl Jam back in mid-90’s on Vitalogy tour. They played car parks etc… to bring their music to non-standard venues & thus avoid ticketmaster. This was big news back in the day & the music media just stood by & criticised PJ. Sad times, tickets for shows are a joke now, can’t even que @ venue box office to obtain tickets now, for arena shows etc…

Lol. I genuinely appreciate that they cleverly changed the thumbnail from Springstein to Taylor Swift a month later.

i've skipped certain concerts cuz i was so outraged by the money-grab fees. generally try to buy them right at the venue. that helps but isn't exactly convenient.
