A great tip I learned from a veteran woodworker when installing hinges is to use a self centering drill bit to get the pilot hole started then come back with a proper pilot bit. Also, a good majority of the time, the screws will be made of brass and are prone to breaking off easily. Add some wax to the threads and screw it in by hand to minimize stress.

Great video, I really like the level of detail you share. I attempted to install hinges on a small box and they were horrible. Followed your guidance and they were perfect. I had no ideal there were so many details in what seems like a very simple hinge install. I encountered every single issue you addressed, I will step up to the more expensive hinges in future builds. Again thank you for sharing your knowledge.

I use a centre finding bit for the screw holes and before screwing in brass screws I screw in same size steel screws. This is very important if using a hard wood like oak. If not done this way the brass screws may shear. A really interesting video. Getting screws that fit the countersink or vice versa is a common problem. It would be best to check that before starting. Amazing detail in this video. The ultimate guide.

Good videos, It has been my understanding that odd screw sizes, such as 3, 5, 7 etc, were always used for fixing hinges and handles to wood which is why the 4, 6, 8 etc sizes are always either too small or just a bit too large but much more common as they were in general use. I have yet to investigate how the more modern metric size screws fit with hinges and handles.

So firstly sorry for using your channel as a outlet here but as I don't use social media I just felt this was the best way to get my thoughts on this matter out there . Myself and my wife visited the Midlands woodworking show yesterday and had the chance to have a chat with yourself matt while we were there it was lovely to meet you as I think your channel is fun to watch and informative so anyway to my comment.Matt was demoing on the Axminster stand and with him there were other small stands demoing other Axminster products one of which was being manned by a young guy showing the new level cam clamps that Axminster had developed I believe in conjunction with ukj so myself and my wife were watching this young guy demo these clamps and we were the only people on the stand apart from one other guy who walked up and began watching too. So this guy then decided he was going to try and embarrass this young guy demonstrating this product by asking him the most awkward questions about the material these clamps were made of to which the lad behind the desk did not fully know the ins and outs of. Now here's my issue with this, this person took absolute delight in the fact that this lad didn't fully know the specs of the clamp material and the smug grin that spread across his face as he looked over at me and my wife demonstrated that completely. I'm not the most intelligent guy on the planet but I'm practical and thats why I love woodworking so when people at shows do things like this just to try and make themselves look clever in front of other people at trade stands it makes my blood boil, so in conclusion this is for the demo lad on that Axminster stand you were doing a great job and to that guy who thought you made yourself look big, your the prick, not that lad and your the type of person that has kept me away from woodworking shows for many years up until yesterday but next time I witness this I'm gonna pipe up and tell everyone in earshot just what I think of guys like you. Matt it was great to meet you keep up the excellent work and the great channel

Nice one Matt, really well explained... just a point, you aim at cabinet makers and fine woodworking... But even "wood butchers" for the want of a better description can pick up fabulous tips. As a new woodworker this will help me the next time i fit hinges. I have a set of nice hinges i bought for a job yet to be completed and often use 50p hinges from Wilko. So when i get a minute or two i will fine tune a set of these and see if it turns them into a £15 set... Cheers

I've recently used countersink bit to mark the centre of the hole in something like hinges. Have you tried that? You also have used countersink to make the holes deeper in hinges, so it's just a matter of doing it in-place of their installation.

Hey Matt. I was trying your technique today. The issue i kept having is splitting in the "wide direction" of the mortise when initially truing to get the bulk material out. I left some space between my chops and each side, and when I went to pair them out the fibers on each side of the "stop" chop came out too. Ever have this issue?
