Thank you for putting this on the main channel. You're the only person I've found online that is doing this stuff relating to motorsports. There's lots of info out there, but its all skewed towards others subjects that I just don't have much interest in.

At the bottom of the menu where you find the 2 point dimension is a tool called caliber, way faster or even the one right below “2 point” Point and plane you pick your point on one side and the plane of the other. Always a straight line. I work with this software and him scanners everyday at work.

Yeah thanks I have tried those, and probably makes more sense than changing the coords manually but this way I found easy to explain. But lots of great tips!

It's really amazing that GOM let's you do everything it does in a free package. I've used seriously expensive software in the past to do very similar things. Great video man, very very clear explanations of each process. It's worth remembering when using an entire face worth of scan data for a best fit, it's worth excluding or deleting the data in the holes. Even though a best fit will ignore the data after a certain depth in the whole, having lots of data for each hole in a set direction will bias the best fit. The difference this will make is probably negligible but here's an annoying metrology eng's input 😅

That is a great shout, I was hoping the selection algorithm would sort that out but it’s a good point. I need to get better at GOM inspect, but it’s a classic piece of pro only software… vertical learning curve! 😳 Glad you enjoyed it!
@jonwebb9261
@jonwebb9261 Жыл бұрын
@@MakingforMotorsport I'm somewhat guessing but the selection algorithm will best fit a surface in a (for example) 50 micron range and if that range is taken up but hole faces going all in one direction, it will then bias the best fit. Very familiar with that vertical learning curve but luckily KZfaq channels like yours make these things more manageable!

Must admit I am glad that you mentioned it is beginning to skirt on GD&T, as I am one of the people who has spent an entire career working in it - well actually in that and far broader high precision metrology. When I saw the title of the video it was red rag to a bull on first view, and I was about to roll the sleeves up for a bit of a barney !! I thought using those scanners for any kind of meaningful metrology comparison is the equivalent of endorsing taking an engine apart with a chisel, hammer and a Leatherman. Anyway I calmed down, after getting to the disclaimer, enjoyed the video and the as usual great content. It actually is great to see other people using scanners etc for not just making game player figures etc. I am more of a motorcycle than car guy but really enjoy what you are doing having only recently discovered the channel. Thanks, your efforts are appreciated.

GOM inspect is very nice but it also has a steep learning curve - especially for someone like me who has no experience with any metrology techniques/software. Thanks for this quick intro, this gives me a quick introduction and now I am not that scared to select a function from the menu and push buttons 😁 Instead of creating two points on two planes and aligning them manually, you can also create the second point using Construct -> Point -> Projection point. This will project a point on the second surface using the normal of the first point's surface. This removes any dependencies of the coordinate system. I did get an error (normals are opposite) but that was easily fixed by ticking the "Do not check normals" box

Ive scanned most of my Mini R53 and love these videos, one gripe i have is, when measuring a 123 Block that is 1-2-3 inches, why not use inches for the measurements? I know the point is to demonstrate accuracy and i am a metric user in germany, but it just bugged me lol
@MakingforMotorsport
@MakingforMotorsport Жыл бұрын
Hehe… the reason is that the inch is defined as being 25.4mm. Even America that uses imperial measurements has metric as its actual standard!

Absolutely fantastic content. I’m just at the very start of trying to learn CAD. I’ve downloaded Fusion360 and GOM after watching your videos. I’m generating point clouds with my phone to try to understand and get my head around the workflow before even thinking of getting a scanner. Could you possibly include an STL or point cloud generated by a phone in a future video to demonstrate the accessibility of this tech to us mere mortals?
@MrGadgetgav
@MrGadgetgav Жыл бұрын
It was good to hear about MeshMixer and GOM Inspect free from this video, but the GOM plane at 17:46 is not the first perfect flat plane in the whole video. Almost any package can construct a plane from 3 points and you did that earlier in the video. You could have done that on all six sides and (if you picked the points reasonably) it would have been very close to the GOM 6 plane model. The advantage to GOM is the way it can make a best-fit plane through the massive number of points in a scan cloud.
@MakingforMotorsport
@MakingforMotorsport Жыл бұрын
Yep, fair enough, I did that using plane from 3points in Fusion and yep that was a true plane, but it wouldn’t be as accurate and would change each time as different points would be selected, that said, the difference would be very small….
@MrGadgetgav
@MrGadgetgav Жыл бұрын
@@MakingforMotorsport Right... It's important to keep a sense of perspective on the differences. Using three (or maybe even two) decimal places from 3D scanner data is implying accuracy that just isn't there.Just because the number shows up in software, doesn't mean it's real ;) Also, I'm not familiar with Fusion 360 but in SolidWorks (which I've been using since 1998) any measurement between two features is automatically displayed in X,Y,Z and normal. You could get the equivalent of the GOM two point measurement without needing to change X & Y values with just two clicks. I'd be surprised if Fusion doesn't have a similar option
@MakingforMotorsport
@MakingforMotorsport Жыл бұрын
@@MrGadgetgav yeah, of course, but I have been critiqued before on using point to point measurement. And even meshmixer has XYZ and surface normal alignments, these rely on alignment to the Global coordinate system and or a flat surface. In reality, the type of accuracy on display here is well above what most people need or could handle….
