A few days ago my husband told me a sad story of what happened to a small shop owner recently. After april 16th beer was not allowed to be sold in mini markets but this woman continued to sell as she was an "agen" and not a mini market. She is a nice woman...sitting there everyday selling everything from pampers to beverages at a good price...which she will quote to you after she punches numbers into her old school calculator. But the other day she told my husband she had been approached by an group of civilians (oganisasi masyarakat yang mengatasnamakan suku tertentu). After several racial slurs (she is of Chinese descent) they proceeded to accuse her of breaking the law by selling beer after april 16th, threatened to burn down her store, and then they stole all of the beer that she had in stock. No doubt after that they took off their turbans and drank the beer they stole. How does stuff like this happen?! When will people here start treating "strangers" with a similar level of respect and kindness that they show their friends and family? Do we want to continue robbing and cheating others so we can provide for our families? Wouldn't it be nice if we just stopped doing that altogether and helped each other grow and prosper? Luckily I've had better luck here than the Ibu from that shop, but just hearing about that happening saddens me deeply. Where is the voice of the Indonesia I have grown to know and love? Please stop allowing these things to happen. I can't do anything...I'm even worse than a stranger...I'm an orang asing :-( I'm lucky I'm allowed to make youtube videos! I feel blessed you have subscribed to me and given me a voice... Thank you from the bottom of my heart. Anyway. Peace out...and Sok, subscribe! Thanks for watching and please share if you like the ending. I'm experimenting with a new format: ending on a good positive note. Love You! Daaaaa!

That system of helping your relatives when the times of need (especially the need of financial back up for health issues, primarily surgery), is pretty much true about Indonesia.. I have a story about it: My family is not really a rich family.. We're self-sufficient in terms of daily need, but we can barely have savings.. Then my mom got a problem with her teeth.. After several check-ups it's sure that there is a tumor growing in my mom's jaw, and it need to be removed as soon as possible through surgery, before it grows and become a cancer.. Since the local doctor and hospital has not yet able to do it (actually they do, but they refused it because their diagnosis are different then that of the overseas doctors), so my mom has no other choice than to conduct the tumor surgery in overseas.. But, we barely have money for it.. That's when my family members, the friends of my mom and the friends of my mom's brothers and sisters, also my mom's boss are come hand in hand helping my mom to raise the fund for the surgery.. Just less then a month, the necessary fund was collected, and my mom head to the overseas to be surged.. And praise be to the Lord, the surgery went well, and she is now has no problem with her teeth and jaw.. It was an eye tearing moment when I remembered how the Lord provides my mom with the necessary money for the surgery through the help of the people that surrounds my mom and my family which all of them are Indonesian..

to be honest at that last bit there I was waiting for your usual critical punch, since I'm so used to see that in your videos. No need to worry, those 'negative' stuff are simply you making an honest observation of us and finding comedy in it, I think it is lovely. I do not need you to say that you love Indonesia, your videos reflect all of that already. I really do appreciate how much you understand Indonesian people, I think you are making a great effort to do so. Your Indonesian is seamless, and you understand the subtle ways we use language. I think you are awesome! keep to good work!

I'm from Chicago and I lived in Indonesia last year (Bandar Lampung). One of my bule friends found your videos online and we shared them with our family and friends because it was so difficult for us to dictate the rich and confusing country we were living in. Through your videos we found counsel in knowing we weren't alone being confused constantly living in a country of contradictions. Our saying was expect the unexpected because everyday is an adventure in Indonesia, and once we came to accept this, we were able to see the beauty of the country we called home. I understand where you are coming from being told to go home if you don't like it, but what those commenters fail to understand is our amazement and new perspectives we are gaining. Yes it's complicated, yes there are strict rules and each and every one of those rules are broken, and yes it's hard to be a bule living in Indonesia, but I wouldn't and it seems you as well wouldn't change it for the world. My year in Indonesia changed and shaped me as a person, and I now back in the states, still find myself acting a bit Indonesia every day.

Sacha, Just discovered you vids. Very good. You are a natural linguist, you have a golden ear as you picked up and reproduce accents perfectly. Natural acting talent and a good sense of humor. You wrote: But the other day she told my husband she had been approached by an group of civilians (oganisasi masyarakat yang mengatasnamakan suku tertentu). After several racial slurs (she is of Chinese descent) they proceeded to accuse her of breaking the law by selling beer after april 16th, threatened to burn down her store. Sacha, there is a dark side of the colorful Indonesia you have seen or lived in. I relate to the story your husband told you, that when I lived there, our family was being harassed on daily basis, some Chinese descent are stronger and others like me fled because we just could not take it anymore. At least, in my new country, where I pay hefty tax, people just do not do that kind of thing. You are lucky, as you are pretty, smart and a bule. Indonesians like you. However, if you were born of a different race, that you might know what I am writing about. However, you and your husband appear nice and were brought up with good solid moral grounding. Otherwise he would not tell you about what happened to that Chinese descent lady. After all that lady was probably born in Indonesia of god knows how many generations living there. She would never be truly Indonesian and therefore worthy of being robbed and harassed.

Namanya budaya Gotong royong yang sudah ada sejak jaman nenek moyang...stay together help each others happy together and sad together..i wish the same too..that Indonesia will always like before..the culture is in the people..not in the goverment actualy.... I remember when my mother build home the people in my vilage are helping And when my father in the hospital they look after my father too.. we dont pay them... :) they help from the bottom of their heart..and my family do the same when others need.. Thankyou sacha for lifting this issue ..Gotong royong almost disapear in indonesia since people like to bullying each other in social media or in the real life..

As for the negative things and they are abundant: isn't making fun about them - and laughing heartily - the best way to cope? I really like how you make your ending. It's very touching. Related to the stuffs you said about people commenting on how negative you are in your video(s), I believe they are just insulted because they might act or know someone who act like that. You always put some sort of FYI/Warning notes before your video to tell that not ALL Indonesians are like that. People who's saying it's negative are taking it too seriously. What you said in your videos are true, and personally, I really like it because you tell how most of us (in general) act on how we really are. Yes, not all Indonesians are like this, but we are looking at the majority of people. So, for all people commenting bad stuffs or insulting Sacha by saying that she is too negative, please be a little bit more open minded. Be grateful that there are people who are not afraid to point out our mistakes. We can always use it as a lesson and improve from it, instead of looking it as an insult to Indonesian people. There is a lot of point of view in viewing things and you can always try to look at things in different way, you know.

Hahaha, videonya kocak!

Hi Sacha, I live in Bali for the last 1 year and a half and like so many bule I passed through a period of criticism but at the end my love for Bali (Indonesia) is stronger then its weak points. Your message at the end of the video was increasingly true and we can felt it was coming from the hearth. By the way, you're a Canadian like me (I'm a French Canadian from Québec) so it's cool to see a Canadian expat doing these kind of videos in Indonesia. Your Bahasa is very good, impressive! P.S. It's true you look like Sasha Grey but take it like a compliment she's beautiful especially in the TV series Entourage, does she play in other film, I'm not aware ;) Xavier

lol cool vid sacha , so comforting to know that there are foreigners besides guys from malaysia timur leste and thailand in jakarta ,and i have that same dilemma when i tell the guys back home in (cape town) about my indonesian life ,they say it all just seems so harsh etc . . . lol just different kinds of living i guess ,btw the sandal problem happens way too offen ,ive literally seen sandals with locks on them haha ,like the lock is worth more then the sandals bro :'D ,oh almost forgot where can i find a propper burger ,Mc-D's burger king kfc etc are tiny , oh i found this place in bintaro "blenger" theyve got average sized burgers ,but now im blenger'd out . . .btw you are actually promoting Indonesia ,couldnt really find any indonesian vloggers/bloggers ,and that kind of puts indonesia in the dark ,so ill see you around sometime lol stay cool and semangat
