Expat, foreigner, immigrant… whatever you think you are, in Indonesia you are a called a “bule”. Because Asia is the new “IT” place to be, I decided to make a video that talks about the reality of “bule" life in Indonesia. People look at white skin in Indonesia and automatically think $$$. This is not the case for the majority of foreigners who come here to teach English at courses such as EF. In the video I cover the cost of living in Indonesia, and also some pros and cons of being a Bule in this awesome country. INDONESIA! …oh…I forgot to mention...This video is pretty hilarious.

So true. Cigarettes, drugs and prostitutes can be cheaper than decent food, wine and proper household stuff. Can't really call it poverty when the people here choose to have an expensive phone over a decent home.

I usually went to local market in the morning, once you get to know how much things cost for normal Indonesian people, you really don't see the point in giving money to those expensive fashion markets that sell fake organic food. Just go to the market food in Indonesia is wonderful

I don't think the term "Bule" also applies to Chinese, Japanese, Arabs, Africans and Latin-Americans. Only Caucasians (white people) are called "Bule" by Indonesians. Other non-SE-Asian looking people don't get called "Bule". Example: Orang Negro (blacks), Orang Arab (Middle-Eastern people), Orang India, Orang Jepang, Orang China, etc.

Because rokok is actually a LEGAL drugs for us. Yes you can buy alcohol, but rokok won't make you drunk. If you angry? You smoke. You feel iritated? You smoke. Does brokoli / bawang / apel / veges or fruits reduce your stress? No. But rokok does. That's being said. That's my opinion tho.

My tips for the cheaper ones: 1. Find indonesian product for substitute My experince living oversea (kuala lumpur). Not everything more expensive here and vise versa. So i have to be smart to choose the product. 2. If you r not comfortable shoping in traditional market. Go shop to carefoour. Belive me.. Its much cheaper than other modern market (foodhall, ranchmarket etc) 3. I dont think 1 million/ month room that bad in jakarta.. Or maybe because its "bule" then the owner making the price? Hmm..my tips you (bule) to have local friends in jakarta. So they can help to bargain. 4. Wine and alcohol.. Well.. I agree. The priice is expensive. Have you ever try duty free shop? 5. Cigarette is cheap because its indonesian product rite? The conclusion is.. Everything imported is expensive. So find and be comfortable with substitute product. Changing wine to "intisari" or "anggur orang tua" is agood choice 😀 Change your vodka to "tuak" 😂 Change your lemon to "jeruk nipis" Change Blueberry to strawberry (soo cheap in bandung)😊😊😊

Hey Sacha. Just wanted you to know that I'm really liking what you're doing with your videos. You introduce a new point of view towards Indonesian society (via a bule's eyes) and delivers various social commentaries and criticisms about the society that is Indonesia (im totally a big fan of your video 'warteg rasis', that one's my fav). FYI I too can be considered as a bule who had lived 10+ years in Indonesia (people called me 'bule lokal' because I'm Malaysian who went to SMP, SMA and kuliah in Indo). Some of the expat and bule living in Indo videos you made really hit the mark most of the time for me, and I can totally relate to most of them (ya walaupun gue bisa membaur aja karena tampang gue yang indo2 aja because of Malaysia sharing many common heritages with Indonesia hahaha) . Keep up making good stuff and nevermind the negative comments you occasionally got here n there, I too also get these comments frequently as a WNA. You go girl!

Apa sebenernya gak sama aja, sama2 foreigner?

Interesting Sacha......... I'd share on fb but for the sexual remarks which are true but rather "R" rated. Having lived here for a year less than 30 years, I honestly still dislike being called "BULE". I once wrote a poem about it... I also don't like being called "Londo" but now my son uses that in his videos, 'Londokampung". We have lived in the same house since 1989 - before that we were in Bandung. Here in Surabaya we live in a kampung (which is why Dave calls himself "londokampung") so I see into the poverty plus my husband works for Yayasan Pondok Kasih, an NGO that works among the poor. It really is a dilemma for a foreigner living here to work out what standard they can/should/would be good to live at. I think we just fell into, or were led into, how we live BUT to live long term here one must try to eat as healthy as possible. We live with two Mushollas very, very close - one across our rather narrow road in front and the other, just near the back fence. We cannot even hear anything at home when they are going and it is not only me and my husband who are disturbed by the noise but also some of my very Islamic neighbours - and then, all the wedding parties and circumcision parties (one tonight, another tomorrow night that we are invited to in our neighbourhood) that most often block the road and drown the area in noisy dangdut...as do the bazaars that run every other month for a couple of nights... all opportunities to mix with the locals even more. Not sure where I'm headed in all I'm saying to you as I could write a book on what has happened over the last almost 30 years here...and what it is like living as a "bule" here. By the way, I saw you, heard you, may have even spoken to you at the UBUD Writer's and Reader's Festival a couple of years ago - you were such a bright spark there. Definitely, being fluent in Indonesian helps and it would be a lot easier too if I was fluent in Javanese (like my sons are) and Madurese but we can't do everything.

+Sacha Stevenson I didn't also imply that expats weren't immigrants. What I meant was that it would sound fairer to address bule as immigrants rather than expats. By saying fairer I mean if westerners call outsiders in their countries as immigrants, it has to be applicable for westerners in non-western countries as well.

well, i'm not against the video or Sacha as the video maker, but i think the title is not the right one. it is so true that many people or specially foreigners misunderstand between INDONESIA and JAKARTA or JAVA ISLAND or BALI. if the title called expat life in JAKARTA or other cities in java island or bali, then it fits the video. but in my city, you'll get spacious-with-all-complete-facilities-room for 1 million rupiah a month. even you can get that cluster house too for 1 million rupiah/month (yes, you can pay per month, not per year). i don't really know about Jack D's price, but fruits and any other organics veggies are not that expensive either here, many of them not even reach US$1/bag. like i said, this may be true in Jakarta or any other metropolis cities in Java island or Bali, yet Indonesia IS NOT ONLY Java island or Bali, it is not true in as many other cities in Indonesia, and Jakarta is not an example for the whole Indonesia, so you can't generalize. and many your bule friends who live overseas cant be misunderstood of living cost in Indonesia.. :) but thanks anyway for the video, it's very amusing :))

Linda Tandayu US$1 a bag where you get that ? pasar or indomaret ??? if that correct i will never buy it, its probably a deadstock or some uncertified organic shit you got . most of expats living in jakarta i know bought their stuff in imported store like kemchicks, foodhall or grand lucky ,the price are way expensive

I think that in general, Indonesians don't even know what it's like to live outside their home city either. The video is most relevant in Jakarta and Bali, yes, but I think it does set a pretty good expectation for the most part. The main message is, Indonesia is a totally different country and that there are things foreigners should know about the fact of 'low cost of living' and how Indonesians perceive value, which is pretty much uniform throughout the country. Which also means that even if rent is cheaper outside of Java and Bali, the pay will also be less. Coupled with the fact that there's not that many jobs available for foreigners outside of Java and Bali (unless you work for an international oil/mining company but that's different, since those jobs almost always pay with the 'western rate' which would really make Indonesians prices a steal), most foreigners would more likely end up in Java or Bali (or Balikpapan, which is also an exception).

If only the government is committed to impose high tax on cigarettes and encourage production of high quality food, I'm optimistic that Indonesia will be a much healthier country. But it may not be so simple though, the low economic income and rooted habits of Indonesians will require some time to adapt.

I don't think high tax on cigarettes is advised. I think Canada went overboard on cigarette taxes. Many poor people smoke. It's an addiction that is not easy to stop. And when you are addicted you will buy it no matter what it costs. Do we really want to force these poor people to choose between rice and cigarettes? In Canada people come to you on the street asking not for money but for smokes. Poor people won't quit. It's one of the small enjoyments they have. Cigarettes, friends, and family.
