I'd never heard of a quaich (quaigh/quoich) until I had a couple with Scottish roots ask me if we could add it to their wedding ceremony.
"Uh, yeah! Of course... sure we can do that! ...What is it? And how do you spell it...?"
Are you wondering how to add a quaich to the wedding ceremony for your couple?
Technically, a quaich (pronounced "quake", but with more saliva) is a style of cup or bowl that traditionally originates in Scotland. So really, we would properly call this a quaich wedding ritual or something like that. But let's go with the shorthand: this ritual takes on the name of the object that it's centred around - the quaich.
So we'll call this ritual a quaich. The same way we call a toast... a toast.
Now, as with every single topic around wedding elements, there are 21,000,000 ways to do a quaich. But here's the wonderful thing about officiating weddings in the zeitgeist that is "millennials getting married" in the 21st century: couples nowadays are just not as interested in following traditions and rituals down to the letter and the finest detail. That's good news for us officiants terrified of "screwing it up!"
Couples are more interested in the spirit of the thing. They want to preserve the elements and its meanings with less concern for the pomp and circumstance.
So, is my way the single, proper way to do a quaich? Maybe not. For that, track down your BFF's Scottish grandma.
On the other hand, is this a beautiful, simple, meaningful way to include a quaich in the wedding ceremony? Have I done it several times this way and has it worked out? Will it give our couple and their guests that fun and moving experience we're all hoping for? You betcha! (Or should I say, "Aye!" No. No, I probably shouldn't.)
This video will teach you how to add a quaich to your wedding ceremony.

Hi Mark, great video. Thanks. One of my couples- he was Scottish and she was Japanese. Instead of whiskey or wine, they chose to use Saki. very symbolic and meaningful for them.

This is wonderful. This could even be combined with the Japanese traditional marriage tea ceremony. I was the maid of honor in my Japanese friend's wedding, and it was a lovely tradition. I poured the three cups for the groom, the bride and one for unity (or something similar to this concept)

Doing my FIRST wedding in about 11 days. I've been friends with them for about 10 yrs. Oddly enough im calm, but nervous because I've obviously never done this before. At what point is it ok to give their family and friends a little back story on who i am and how we became friends and maybe a funny story. Before I walk out with the groom, after I walk out with the groom while we wait for the ceremony to start. I kinda want to just break the ice but still be professional. I appreciate your videos, keep posting. 🙌

a good option is also to have ethe father of the bride and father of the groom ( or either party in lgbt weddings) the quaich is a symbol of joining of families and symbolicly would work better having the family pour and present to their children.
