How to Add Color to Wood Burning

Watercolor pencils are a great way to add color to your wood burned pieces. The color is easier to control in pencil form. You can layer colors, add gradients and blend with water.
In this simple wood burned piece, I walk you through my process for using watercolor pencils in my pyrography.

I saw this and had to add color to a feather project. I just happened to have watercolor markers so I used thosel. I use beeswax a lot for other diy's so I sealed it with that. I have no idea if that will work and I put sealant on my shopping list for my next project. Good thing I have popsicle sticks and scrap wood to practice on.with my $12.00 woodburning tool purchased at my local $ store. I've been studying your review videos to decide which woodburner I want to upgrade to and your channel has been very helpful so that I'll be able to make a wise choice.

Instead of using a medium that can be washed away… have you ever tried Derwent Inktense? They can be manipulated just like watercolor, but once they dry, they’re just like ink. :)

So pretty! I’m new to this scene and if you don’t mind my asking, is it also possible to add a light stain/poly to the colored piece without bleeding the color? Thanks soo much!

Thanks! And yes, you can add a varnish without it bleeding. Let it dry completely; then varnish. I like to use a polycrylic or lacquer spray with a satin finish on both sides. I typically spary two coats and lightly sand in between coats.

I believe I used a spray lacquer on this piece. It's been a while since I burned this one, but I tend to use spray's on rounds. I never have trouble with the colors running.

Hey Julie! Yes, I used a combo sealer on this one. Kamar Varnish first, then a UV Coat. They are both sprays from Krylon. You gotta put the Kamar spray on first, then the UV. They dry really quick.

Can you use on a charcuterie board or cutting board then cover with cutting board oil? Or would the oil make the pencil coloring mess up?

Good question! I would maybe test that on a scrap piece of wood. I've never added color to a charcuterie or cutting board, so can't say how that would turn out.

Does this raise the grain of the wood? Do you have to lightly sand it smooth again?

It may raise the grain a bit, I never officially checked it out. But at the watercolor stage, there’s no more burning, so the smooth surface isn’t as necessary. I do lightly sand after varnishing, so that helps smooth the final surface too. Great question!

I just tried my Daniel Smith watercolor, dried from a tube. I used as little water I could but still found some bleeding. You didn’t find any issues with the pencil?

Hey Dawn! If you don't use too much water when blending, you can control the bleeding with the pencils much better. If you over water, it may bleed into the grains.

Does the wood raises with the moisture of the water paint ?

If the wood is too thin, it may warp. But these rounds aren’t effected with this small amount of water.

Not a dumb question at all; I always burn first on raw wood to avoid any chemicals. Then I add stain, paint, varnish, etc... Thanks!

After the colours dry, can you use a finish such as danish wood oil to help protect the wood or would it smudge the colouring?

You can use a Danish oil and mine have never smeared. I like to use a spray now because it's cleaner and I use less materials. Polycrylic and Lacquer sprays are my go to options.

Absolutely!! My favorites are lacquer and polycrylic sprays; satin. They both protect the wood and color and gives it a slight sheen.

Is it ok to reburn where paint covered the burn?

I’m not sure about the safety of burning the paint, so be sure to have a fan and be in a well ventilated area. But you can burn over paint. I have burned over small bits of paint that got into my burn areas.

I like watercolor because it doesn't cover my burn lines. Acrylic is more opaque and I have to be really careful with it. I will occasionally use acrylic to cover a larger area of a piece that doesn't cover any burn areas.

You can use a customizer tool/small fine dremel, or you can use a razor blade and carefully shave off layers of wood and paint until it lifts out.

Not if you varnish it. Make sure to cover it with something to seal it all in, polycrylic, lacquer, kamar/UV combo, are all good spray options.

another artist says that the SOFTNESS of the wood determines how watercolor or regular colored artist pencils work, like HARD WOODS don't take the watercolor or pencil as well so she talks about OIL paints, thin and sheer...
