This is true. You cannot apply vinyl directly on the canvas because it’s not a smooth surface and the vinyl needs that

I would not recommend HTV over painted canvas, no. I would try permanent vinyl instead. If you need a little extra adhesion you can use a blow dryer to gently warm the vinyl.

I would find something to put underneath the canvas within the frame so you can get a good press.

Did painting first (acrylic?) have an effect on the heat transfer? I'm thinking of trying something like this too, but wonder if acrylic paint on top of the cotton canvas hurts the HTV. Did you try?
