Tired of using chlorine tablets or granules in your pool? Liquid chlorine can be a great alternative. And depending on the size of your pool, it only takes a gallon or two each week to keep your water sanitized. But you’ll need to buy some other chemicals, like chlorine stabilizer, to make sure it works properly. And you’ll need to double or triple your dose of liquid chlorine if you’ve got issues like algae. So here’s a quick guide on how to add liquid chlorine to your pool.

Great video, agree with everything! Liquid chlorine only temporarily increases the pH. Afther a few hours the pH should be equal to before you started the addition. HOCl turns into HCl (which lowers the pH) and NaCl (salt) if you have a salt water pool. I would advise anyone with a swg who temporarily shocks the pool (to lower combined chlorine e.g.) to turn off the swg for a couple of hours as inside the swg combined with higher pH will create a (higher) LSI violation and may create calcium. Thanks for this video with your great advice.

Dear, we have an dancing fountain, of around 1.6 million gallons. And our ss equipment in it is now covered with stubborn sticky algae, and also dark greezy spots on floor. These problems came after an incident of 400 liters kerosene was leaked inside ... Is there any thing to eliminate its effect ??

What size pool do you have? We have a 18x42 BestWay. I’m thinking about switching to liquid because I’m having an awful time balancing and seem to always have more total chlorine than free. I definitely think the tablets are better for larger pools

I did liquid chlorine for a while thinking it was better because it would be effective immediately and not have to be disolved like granules or tablets. It worked for a time but then I would still get green water even with very high chlorine levels. Dichlor granules seemed to work better for me. I do have a question though - some sources say it is not advised to use different chlorines in the same pool, such as using dichlor and trichlor at the same time. What are your thoughts on that?
@SwimUniversity
@SwimUniversity Ай бұрын
Yeah, that's the downside to liquid chlorine: it's less potent. Great for smaller pools, but requires so much more in bigger pools. Plus CYA. I wouldn't risk mixing chlorine. You should never mix two types of chlorine together outside of the pool. Which also means that you shouldn't mix them in a "container" like a chlorinator or floater.
@TimLewallen

@@SwimUniversity I understand not mixing different chlorines before adding them to the pool, I was asking about using different chlorines in the same pool. I would assume that is OK?

@SwimUniversity My Liquid trichlor chlorine gallon bottles say they're 90% chlorine, not 10%; in such case, how much should I drop weekly? shock? I have 22,000 gal pool. I also have a chlorinator where I can drop chlorine tabs; how many chlorine tabs should be in there at a time? fill up the whole chlorinator and change the setting?
@SwimUniversity
@SwimUniversity Ай бұрын
You need 4-5 tablets (3 inch) to sanitize 22,000 gallons of water (1 tablet for every 5,000 gallons). What brand is your liquid chlorine? It should definitely not be 90%.

Are there any other ways to lower CYA other than draining?
@SwimUniversity
@SwimUniversity Ай бұрын
The CYA reducers have mixed results. You can try it if you absolutely can't drain and refill your pool. But that's the only guaranteed way to bring down CYA.

I just went through this. bought a 1/2 hp utility pump off amazon and hooked up a garden hose. ran the hose to my sewer drain out. just do partial drain and refill. I let it drop 7 or 8 inches then refilled. then repeated that process three times. My CYA and total hardness dropped to good levels and I was able to slowly balance it back correctly. hope that helps.

I have a hot tub and have been using stabilized chlorine granuals. In your opinion is liquid chlorine and cya better than granulated chlorine. Should I consider changing?

Is your hot tub uncovered during the day? You shouldn't need stabilized chlorine if it's not exposed to sunlight.

Hi Matt, I have been using trichlor tablets for a long time and my CYA is really high at about 200 ppm. I replaced a lot of the water and still have really high CYA. I know if its high the CYA, the chlorine is inefective. The more I use the tablets the more the CYA keeps building up. I want to go to strictly liquid. Sooo will the CYA disapate? Al;so I must have chloromines because Im adding 10oz of liquid everyday and which brings up the free chlorine but by evening its gone. HELP!!!!! It cost mucho$$$$$$ , thanks in advance
@SwimUniversity
@SwimUniversity 27 күн бұрын
Definitely stop using tablets and the CYA should stop rising. Unfortunately, you'll need to drain and refill with fresh water to bring the CYA down. Once it comes down, the chlorine should be able to work better. You can tell if you have chloramines if there's a big difference between your FREE CHLORINE reading and TOTAL CHLORINE reading.

The bottle says to add 13oz for 10,000 to increase 1ppm. I have a 7600 gallon pool so I added 30 oz and saw zero difference. Guess I’ll just add 3/4 of the gallon and test again.

Are you saying “maintenance dose” as one treatment? For example my 10k gal pool adding 1 gallon of 12% raises my chlorine 12ppm. Should I be dosing it all at once because I usually daily dose around 12-24 oz depending on my daily loss. Thanks for sharing these videos with all of us!
