You should use a few drops of machine oil. Put it on the drill bit and let it flow down to the cymbal.

That's a good point, sometimes I do and sometimes I'm lazy! Something to mention in a future video.

This is great info! Can't wait to see a video explaining the sound differences between cluster rivets and perimeter rivets. Is there something about the wobble of the cymbal's edge that indicates the best place to drill? Or various places (for different sustain amounts)?
@Collingwoodcymbals3 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Yes if you have, for example, a very loose, wobbly cymbal but you want a subtle sizzle effect, installing rivets right at the edge might not be the best idea due to the amount of movement, so perhaps there's a spot a few inches in which isn't wobbling quite so much? Sometimes the difference is negligible, depending on the cymbal and what you're hoping to achieve, but it's worth taking a minute or two to consider.

Brief video with accurate information. Best wishes!

Where would you put the rivets for maximum effect... an inch from the edge?
@Collingwoodcymbals24 күн бұрын
If maximum effect means most activation, then yeah generally the closer to the edge you go the more you get. But, out there where the movement is greater you can get more of a clanking sound because they're being thrown around so much. I like to look from the side of the cymbal as it moves and usually a couple of inches in you'll see a "node" of movement where the oscillation is fine but still flowing with the crash of the cymbal, if you see what I mean. For me that tends to be where you get the best balance of activation and fine sizzle.

What about using some cotter keys? They arent as flat on one end, but can bemd the same way. These rivets look brass colored.
@Collingwoodcymbals18 күн бұрын
These are brass plated steel. Cotter keys would be worth trying, not sure the shape of them would provide enough sizzle, but maybe with some manipulation! Split pins (stationery supplies) can work well too, and are very easy (& cheap) to add and remove.

What is The size of the drill you used?
@Collingwoodcymbals2 жыл бұрын
Good question! I'm afraid I don't remember but I'd recommend 2mm. Smaller is good but they snap easily if you overdo the pressure, risking scratching the cymbal.

Where can I take my cymbal to get rivets installed?
@Collingwoodcymbals6 ай бұрын
Where are you based? I'm in Bristol, UK, and can do it, or you can find a local cymbalsmith on this map I created: collingwoodcymbals.com/pages/cymbalsmiths-of-the-world

@@Collingwoodcymbals I'll take a look at the map you made! Thanks.

other guy made template, then took cymbal into garage to drill press, then back in house to install rivets, blah blah blah all the way for 45 minutes
@Collingwoodcymbals2 жыл бұрын
Yeah lots of different ways to do it, but it really doesn't need to be a time-consuming job!

This is a terrible video. This is how come in one year you only have 12 comments. Where's your other video talking about what a cluster is compared to other spacings? Do better.

Unconstructive criticism with unnecessary added toxicity. What have you contributed to the drumming community? Be better.
