Everything is easy when you know how. Honestly, this video is a sweet relief from doomscrolling and the Noise of the Day. Just one thing. I know you don't usually plug the guitar in a amp to intonate (I don't either) but a clean boost will make it easier to hear what is going in this excellent video. Thank you!

Wow thanks this actually helps me a lot! I never knew this is how you did it, when I was a kid I would do pretty much the same thing you’re doing but standing up, even though I didn’t know for sure that that was how you adjusted intonation haha

It would be helpful to those who have not done this before to place the tuner in the video frame to see what you are looking at, and as a personal note , using the strobe function on your tuner will give a more accurate reading.
@jasondavis1207
@jasondavis1207 3 жыл бұрын
One more thing, how hard you press the fretted note will alter the reading, so try to fret the twelfth note at the same pressure as you would play it.

@@jasondavis1207 Definitely this, you don't want to be pushing down too hard. And good tip on the strobe function as well, that is what I typically use.

Excellent presentation.I would like to add that you need a good pedal tuner to properly intonate.I tried using a clip on tuner and it did not work well, all the readings were far off. Switched to a pedal tuner and my E & A on my bass were only slightly sharp.

Are you an intonation nut, or is it something you almost never touch? I was the latter for many years but now I'm a lot more attentive to it. edit: Spelling

Once I learned how to intonate from Dan Erlewine's excellent book "How to Make Your Electric Guitar Play Great" I do it every time I install my Stringjoy strings. (I'm an actual customer, not a paid actor.) It really is this easy. It's worth the two or three minutes that it takes to make my guitar sound great! Thank you for this video!

It should be added that the intonation should be adjusted in playing position. Otherwise awesome video!

My Lee Paul Jr has a wrap around bridge and I actually noticed the intonation problems when playing single notes up high. I still like playing that guitar a lot. “Close enough for ROCK N ROLL.” (I do mostly play Strats. 🤣)

Please keep in mind ? That's this video is good but done based on his 6-string that he is using in the video. Someone who has performed on there own guitar might encounter a different situation and need various adjustments from the truss rod to the saddles etc.

Fender will put a guitar repair guide in the order of there guitars upon request ( I think) if you're ordering from fenders actual website. They always honor there guitars with a tool kit and a repair guide ( if you request it ) .

I have seen Guitars that have been intonated with two saddles side by side in the high E , 1st & 2nd, or the 2nd & 3rd, not ever 3rd, 4th, sometimes 4th & 5th, most never the 5th & 6th, though I did see the 5th & 6th string saddles intonated evenly side by side once on a Gibson SG. I figure it is because of nut slots, bridge set or neck set or fret set or string heights or fret heights, or playing articulation or any combo of the above mentioned. I have perfect pitch, so I hear intonation that is off when correctly tuned when any notes are played, especially when two notes or more are correctly freted and played. I have found bent strings or worn strings or not blown in strings or mix-matched gauged strings, old mixed with new strings or incorrectly installed strings such as a sting that gets installed with a clockwise or counter- clockwise spiral in them and ect. I go though all the steps that I can to correct any and all possible issues that may cause the intonation issue(s). When I find two strings saddles even with one-another after being properly intonated, then I know there is some sort of issue that when the guitar is tuned with quality polyphonic tuner or strobe tuner that I can play an E Major 1st Fret Position Chord and most every other Chord will sound out of tune ! ! ! Enjoyed your video lesson here. Happy Holidays & Be Well Stay Safe & Play 🎸 On FretBro . . . 👍🤘🎸😎🙏. DDH 11-26-2020.

How to remember which way to move the saddles: Frequency=tension/mass per unit length. If the frequency is too high (sharp) the string needs to be longer. If it's too low (flat), the string needs to be shorter.

Always wondered; Why do you do the 12th fret harmonic then fret and adjust? Why not just fret 12 and tune from there? I may be missing something obvious......
@Stringjoy
@Stringjoy 3 жыл бұрын
You need a base tone to compare with. When you tune the harmonic you can tell whether the fretted note is sharp or flat of that pitch. If you just tuned the string to where the 12th fret was in tune, the open note might (or likely would) be out of tune. The goal is to get it where the 12th fret harmonic and the 12th fret itself are the same pitch.

Thanks again string joy - boss Throughout some of your videos I keep noticing you do not use an electric winder of any type. any particular reason? 🆒✔️👍👏🎼🎸
@Stringjoy
@Stringjoy 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much Robert! Like an electric string winder for string installation? No, I don't usually recommend them either. While they can be used well, a lot of folks who use them end up overtightening the string or bringing it up to tension too quickly, leading to breakage around the tuning peg.

Taking into account action adjustment, would switching to a lighter gauge necessitate moving the saddles closer to, or further away from the nut?

Please remember that a guitar has movable parts so.... This video is like a one trick pony......it may need to be done several times according to how the guitar is played. It's good information but keep in mind that a guitar has wood and strings pressured so from the neck to the body stock? Things can and will change according to weather . movement. And performance. That's what my video would detail if I ever made one. This guy's video is good .but he left out a few important details about a guitar .. does anyone know what he left out ? Please comment or reply ...

If it takes more than one minute to explain your help with guitars ? Then you'll loose people and they will click away from your video.....too much talking in this ..most musicians only want to see how to do it ? Not hear alit of talk about what why if or when etc. Sorry buddy .this is not information I need show me how ....

Perfect intonation doesn't exist. It can be improved, but it'll never be flawless. And the fastest way we get novice guitarists to stop chasing it is by having people who do these tutorials stop saying "perfect intonation."
