How to Adjust Motorcycle Engine Valve Clearance

One of the most important factors affecting valves temperature is that of valve lash or tappet clearance or valve clearance. Insufficient clearance will result in the valves contacting the seats for a shorter time and consequently operate at higher temperatures. Excessive clearance will result in noisy operation and loss of power. Great accuracy should therefore be used when adjusting valve clearance.
This video shows how to check and adjust the valve clearance in a motorcycle engine.
Especially for Honda Karisma 125D.
Tools:
1. Screwdriver
2. 8 & 9 mm box-end wrench
3. Pliers
4. Feeler Gauge
5. 17 mm socket wrench

Honda has really good schools to train mechanics I went to one of them and it dealt mainly with tuneups there they described a valve adjustment by using the go-no go method. that means you’re putting your .003 mm gauge in but you use the .004 feeler gauge to verify that you have a perfect .003 mm. If the three goes in but the four doesn’t then it’s definitely the .003 mm. If you use this method it will make you a much better mechanic.

Sekolah Online Teknik Otomotif You’re welcome I have one more tip that I noticed might help you when you’re trying to stick your feeler gauge in between the tappet and the valve take your feeler gauge and run it across the round part of a screwdriver to put a curl in it this will make it easier for you to stick the feeler gauge in good luck

hi idol tnx for very informative and very helpful..ur not jus motorcycle mechanic ur mechanic also a 4wheels huh.nice may I know what's the right gauge for the valve clearance of my vegaforce 115cc engine specially intake and exhaust...?and I want to know if same procedure if I do it to my Vega the t mark of crank cover and the timing mark.do the same to Honda??
@sekolahonlineteknikotomotif
@sekolahonlineteknikotomotif 8 жыл бұрын
I have no reliable data or information resources for Yamaha Vega Force engine valve clearance, but as we know that Yamaha Vega Force have similar engine (and valve) to Yamaha Jupiter Z1, it seems we can use the same specification data with Yamaha Jupiter Z1 to Vega Force. Jupiter Z1 have 26 mm intake and 21 mm exhaust valve diameter, and Vega Force was the same. So, this is Yamaha Jupiter Z1 engine valve clearance (when cold): Intake valve: 0.08 mm - 0.12 mm Exhaust valve: 0.08 mm - 0.12 mm the procedure is a little bit different, you need to open cylinder head cover to adjust valve clearance, and the mark on the generator rotor maybe only the "I" line-shaped. I hope this helps.

How tight is the locknut bro? Because when tightening the lock nut the valve clearance becomes tight even though im using a plier to secure the adjusting screw. It should not be super tight isnt it? Just a few turns will be fine?
@sekolahonlineteknikotomotif
@sekolahonlineteknikotomotif 6 жыл бұрын
+Moto Adventurer You need to see your repair manual for more precise torque, and it would be better if you use the torque wrench. However, if you don't have one, use your best knowledge/experience and feeling when tightening the locknut. Try to hold the adjusting screw as motionless as possible, you can use special plier or an SST L-shaped valve adjusting screw wrench. Good luck 👍

+Diosdado Jr. Manghino Actually, I don't have much experience on XRM110. But, basically, the method for adjusting the valve clearance is nearly similar. Unfortunately, I don't have a repair manual for XRM110, but most people said that the valve clearances for XRM110 are 0.04mm (IN) and 0.06mm (EX). I'm glad to hear how is the result. Hello, i have a question. Does during top dead centre both valve (intake n exhaust) are closed? Should i just simply adjust the locknut with the mentioned measurement using filler gauge?
@sekolahonlineteknikotomotif
@sekolahonlineteknikotomotif Жыл бұрын
Yes, when the piston is at TDC (end of compression stroke), that is the best position/timing to adjust both valves.

I can't insert my feeler gage 003. I don't won't to brack the manufacturer's seal ?. First time trying to fix. The cam spring is touching the adjuster nut is that ok. Dose the nut scrow in the cam spring? Thx
@sekolahonlineteknikotomotif
@sekolahonlineteknikotomotif 6 жыл бұрын
In our particular engine, (Honda Karisma 125) the adjuster bolt & nut stay on the rocker arm. Thus, the adjustment doesn't affect the cam spring. Only use the correct size for your particular engine (is it correct to use 0.03 mm for your engine?). If you can't insert the feeler gauge, try to make the gap wider by turning the bolt on counterclockwise direction. Then, adjust the valve clearances to the correct size (manufacturer's recommendations). Good luck!

When i turn the flywheel to Top dead center.. is it okay to adjust valve clearance if the marking on the cam timing is not in position..
@sekolahonlineteknikotomotif
@sekolahonlineteknikotomotif 7 жыл бұрын
+xander blythe It's called "top dead center" if the notches were aligned. So, it's highly recommend to align the notches on TDC position before valve clearance adjustment. Thank you.

great video! Im Planning to diy my own valve clearance of my '13 Honda Future 125 Which has the similar engine. Thing is, the stock O Ring of the Honda Future always have minor leaks. So i was wondering, is it possible if i just cut a piece of gasket paper with the same size of the tappet adjusting cover and use that instead of the o ring? Thanks!
@sekolahonlineteknikotomotif
@sekolahonlineteknikotomotif 6 жыл бұрын
+Munkee Munks Thanks for your appreciation! Well, the repair manual usually recommend you to change the old stock O-ring that causes leaks. However, it's possible to stop the leakage by adding sealant to the old stock O-ring or, as you said, using gasket paper. Personally, as recommended by the manufacturer, I prefer to change the old O-ring with the new-original one as it would be long lasting component. Good luck with your DIY!
@munkeemunks
@munkeemunks 6 жыл бұрын
Sekolah Online Teknik Otomotif so i guess if i change the o ring and adding the paper gasket on top of it, it'll be more effective?
@sekolahonlineteknikotomotif
@sekolahonlineteknikotomotif 6 жыл бұрын
+Munkee Munks The manuals recommend us to "just" change the O-ring, and as far as I know, it is faster and easier (or even cheaper!). Good luck!

What whill happen if the clearance is not right? What if you dont know the right clearance?
@sekolahonlineteknikotomotif

If you set the improper valve clearance, the valve mechanism will skittle away the rattle sounds (if the clearances were too wide), or the engine power will be reduced because of compression and combustion loss (if the clearances were too narrow).
