Good info in this video. I have a similar setup: 14' hyside with a bighorn frame, so I'm sitting on a seat, not on a cooler or box. I have 6" oar mounts and I'm wondering if that is tall enough. I'm 6' even for what it's worth. I feel like my thumbs will catch my shorts pockets sometimes while on the oars...maybe 8" would work better? Is there a rule of thumb for height?

Thanks for the question. The biggest factor when it comes to setting up oars is the position on your legs. Personally my legs are stretched out with only a slight bend at my knees. If you row with your legs in a more seated position (bigger bend at your knees) your knees will end up higher and you'll make more with the oars. NRS used sell frames that included a seat with 6" oar mounts. A few years ago we made the switch to 8" mounts. For the most part people don't had an issue with oar mounts being too high but several people have problems when oar mounts are too low.

What I want to know is placement of oar mounts. What is the ideal placement for them ... how many inches from end of seat or end of knees ... etc???

This ends up being an issue that comes down to personal preference but a good starting point is even with your knees. This will change some depending if you're rowing from a seat vs sitting on a cooler.
