Hi Phil 32 years ago I purchaser my first snow blower. I used in town on sidewalks that were uneven. When the skid hit the high part the snow blower would violently turn to that side. I could see then that the skids was not the answer. So I measured the distance from the bolt hole for the skid to the ground and found sone wheels of that diameter. Ever since then I was able to operate the machine with only using one hand. I still use that snow blower today

Suggest you check the tire pressure and make them somewhat the same. Otherwise the machine will sit on a tilt and the adjustment of the scraper bar will follow and the next time you fill the tires your scraper blade will be skewed.

On a flat surface you should check that you have the scrapper bar space the same on both left and right sides first. If not, it can be adjusted and then adjust the shoes.

great video! you explained this very well. Wish I would have thought to look for this a while back. 3 years later with no adjustment my shoes were plastic and worn away and eventually lead to loss of that blade totally. I have found out what the noise and shimmy was as I was snow blowing.

Tell me about it. I need a “So a Texan moves to New England” channel. So many things and nuances, I thought I was good with just buying a badass snowblower.

Just what I needed. More common knowledge to keep the homestead satisfied. Seeing this video was bitter sweet. Sweet in the sense it gave good advice, bitter because I see how greedy john deere is. My JD shoes are made with only one side usable compared with the double duty extension shoes on the blower shown here. Which in layman's terms, quadruples the cost for parts.

Who wants 1/4" of snow left on the driveway
@wyliecoyote1
@wyliecoyote1 7 ай бұрын
Old video but that's ok, just a comment for others who may read...1/4" is good for old worn driveways where the car tires have somewhat rut the asphalt, where the center driveway section is a bit higher. The scraper bar won't catch on the higher center sections of the driveway. Nice flat asphalt driveway and 1/8" is good, nothing to catch on. Maybe a really worn driveway or dirt driveway, space the scraper gap even more. All driveways are different, different surfaces... trial and adjust to find the right gap.👍

Hi I enjoyed the video. Just to clarify. my goal should be to adjust the skids (shoes?) flush to ground, with scraper 1/4" above ground? I was concerned that my arien was leaving too much snow on driveway after (1/2") and then freezing up afterward. Is this to protect the blades?
@michaellong2791

Doesn’t you leave a layer of snow on the ground if the scraper isn’t on the ground?
@electric8668
@electric8668 2 жыл бұрын
Always make sure both tires have the same amount of air in them and the surface is level. You can use a leveler tool to be precise. The scraper bar adjustment will not be correct if either is off. BTW manufacturers recommend the scraper bar be adjusted 1/8 from ground.

i scrape driveways. as close as possible. I use a twoonie (coin) instead of a 1/4" wrench. doesn't it drive you nuts leaving that much snow behind at your feet?

Thank you, I appreciated the video. Although, skipped the 1/4 to 1/2” clearance on the scraper last Winter when I bought our NEW Toro Max 828.I may do that this week. I have a question though….. The right slid was scraping on the cement last year and I checked the air on tires and that seemed to be fine. WHY is the shoe scraping? I literally had a track it would make in the snow. Maybe it’s designed wrong? I seem not to get any answers even from professionals. So, a couple weeks ago I turned them upside down like you did. Nothing seemed to change. Just that the right shoe just got more paint scraped off then the left one and that was just it idling. I think that is the furthest they will lower too. I could send you pics if need be. ANY suggestions? It just doesn’t make sense to buy a new snow blower and one side seems to scratch the floor. Hmmm. Thanks for reading. Robert in WI.

Should always make sure the tires have the proper air levels in them before doing this. If not you may still end up needing to adjust the machine again.

If your shoes for some reason won't lift the scraper bar off of the ground, tilt your snowblower onto its Chute and loosen the [usually 4 carriage bolts w/ nuts] that hold the scraper bar in place and you should be able to reposition the scraper bar up higher, then just simply tighten the nuts.

Not a shoe question but...when I stand behind my machine and just lightly move the handles left and right, the machine wobbles like its loose between the machine and how cowling. Is this normal movement or should I get it looked at? Thanks.

How cowling?
@thedyslexic9936
@thedyslexic9936 2 жыл бұрын
@@fillslawncare a typo. Okay, so the circular metal piece (called the impeller SHROUD) that is between the COWLING around the auger and the frame where the motor sits. If I wiggle the handles side to side, the frame moves but the SHROUD and COWLING do not. I am not sure if that was like that before or not. The shroud and cowling to me are all cowling...but whatever.

Maybe a silly question but why would the skids need to be adjusted if you just adjusted them last year? Do they move that much while using the machine?
@fillslawncare

Vibration causes them to come out of adjustment :) and/or hitting uneven concrete that might be sticking out/curbs

what difference would this make if scraper bar is in the lowest or furthest back position? Either way when using a 1/4 inch guide item, the shoes mount all the way down to meet the pavement then get tightened. The spacing should be the same 1/4 inch regardless.
