A well adjusted will keep your chain on when it really counts. Watch the video and find out how!

If your chain jumps, or falls, off and if you're having problems shifting when you're putting the pressure down, the chances are that your front derailleur needs some adjustment.
The good news? This is a short, and relatively simple, job. All you'll need is a cross head screwdriver and a 5mm (maybe 6mm) allen key, plus, possibly, a little bit of patience.

After attempting to adjust my derailleur and subsequently bugger it up, I watched this video again. The knowledge passed on by Si has assisted me in un-buggering my derailleur and having it run smoother than ever. Thanks Si and thanks GCN.

This is the BEST video I have found to adjust the front derailleur on KZfaq. The crucial point that cable tension is critical is barely addressed on other videos. Thank you!

After buying my first road bike is was thinking that some adjustments could be made, as the chain was rubbing in the highest gears. However, when loosening the height-screw, I was not prepared for the whole derailleur to completely change position. My knees hurt after 5 hours of work and swearing. However, you helped me to set it back up! Thanks so much!

Usually you can solve shifting problems just by adjusting the cable tension. The derailer is usually fine, including the low/high limit screws. Especially if your bike has been shifting normally previously and you haven't hit or stepped on the derailer in a serious way.

I had this problem a few months ago.. after trying to fix it for two hours with a brand new mech I gave up. It was a great decision,Bought a single speed crank set and I now run a 1 x 8 set up with a 54 front ring and 11- 30 cassette. Everything is so simpler. up one to go easier , down one to go harder. No alignment issues. Plus its lighter. XD Granted I probably cant climb a mountain, but there is no mountains in the where I ride. Additionally it looks awesome and you can say you ride the big ring all the time.

Great video, thanks. Two things you forgot to mention. Before tensioning the cable, ensure that the front shifter lever is clicked enough times that it is in the "least tension" position, otherwise you carefully tension the cable and find that the lever is set incorrectly. Secondly, if you use a strap around the front wheel and down tube to stop the wheel and bars flapping about while the bike is up on the work stand, remember to remove it before setting off on a test ride, particularly if there is a large puddle in your driveway that you might roll into when you go over the bars. Don't ask me how I know, I just do, OK?

I really like the GCN how to guides and the show in general so thank you to all the GCN team. I am new to cycling and had an issue with my chain jumping off the front. I tried using the video but really messed it up, luckily a skilled bike mechanic lives next to me so he sorted it in now time. Just a tip to GCN, when doing these videos it would really help if the camera focused and paused on the more intricate areas so we could see the movement and correct settings.

Best explanation ever. You come right out of the box and explain, up, down, left, right the derailleurs only job is to prevent the chain from falling off, cable tension alone changes gears. I've watched several bike videos that make this sound mysterious.

The phrase that helped me out the most in this was "shimano have a half click shift to avoid rubbing" when in the big ring it would rub on the inboard side of the front mech no matter what, even when I was in the middle of the block, until I heard Simon say about this half click. Just gently tapped the downshift lever and it did its half click and centred itself perfectly. I had been shifting too forcefully with the left lever and then trying to adjust it to that. Been sat here an hour trying to figure it out 😂

Sorry. Terminology of H and L mean nothing. Why not say inner and outer screw? That way I don't have to try to remember whether H is the one closest to the frame or furthest. And what to do if absolutely no difference is made when turning them in any direction?

Thanks for that. After viewing other similar clips you were the only one to say the chain may still rub slightly against the derailleur swing in the lowest gears as it's the Shimano set up. Big Thanks buddy cause I just tried for two hours wondering why it still rubbed slightly, I should've watched your clip first.

It has rattled every time I rode it, not doing so in only 10 of the 20 (I know at least 4 of them should not be used) gears available. Thanks. The simple explanation at the beginning about what the screws adjust vs the tightening of the cable was very helpful. Other videos I watched I think assume you are already a knowledgeable bike mechanic and skip over the explanations of what does what. Got my daughters bike figured out. You have to crank the front handle shifter pretty hard to get it into the bigger gear. Not sure my 11 yr old daughter has the wrist strength, but she can use the middle and lower gear just fine and that's plenty for her. Thanks again!

I realize I am replying to an old post you likely have it resolved but your situation was a good one and others will read it your question. One of the things that the videos I have seen, they do not make mention of a good starting point with the barrel adjusters and H limit screw. You might begin with the H limit screw turned out about two mm so that the top of the deraileur is horizontal with a limited amount of pivot movement. Now, disconnect the cable from the pinch bolt so the cable can move freely. Adjust your barrel adjuster so that it is very loose and can only be tightened (less a couple of turns) once everything is tensionsed properly. Odds are, once everything is set properly, you will not have to losen the cable as the cable will never get shorter with use and age. Now adjust your lower limit screw so that it just pushes the chain up against the large chain ring. Time to pull the cable tight and clamp securely with the pinch bolt. Now back off the lower limit screw about 7 wrist turns so that the deraileur is no longer touching the chain. How you procede from here will depend on the deraileur you have.

I want to add one thing that I think you don't mention in your video and which turned this from being a 10min job into, at least for me, a half day job - Trim. I'm a total bike newbie, and I had no idea that my front gears had this so-called "trim". So when I have the bike in the stand, and I am kneeling next to it trying to change the gears whilst spinning the pedals by hand, I didn't realise I was not fully shifting into the gear. As a result I found that no matter how much I adjusted the cable tension etc that the shifter would rub the chain on *both* the big and small cog. It was infuriating. Then I realised that I had not been fully shifting into the gear and suddenly it all made sense. I think I only worked this out after watching a Park Tool video.

Yesterday my chain fell off the large ring and must have tugged the front mech sideways before I stopped pedalling. Amazes me how almost everything is covered apart from the dreaded chain rub in the front ring!

My gears shift perfectly but I have chain rub when the chain is on the front outer large sprocket. What's the fix? Turn the H limit screw counterclockwise? Never mind. It's barrel adjuster that needed a few twists. The barrel adjuster moves the derailleur side to side. That's where you're going to get chain rub. The limiting screws prevent the chain from falling off. That's basically all you need to know once the derailleur is properly set up

this is a well explained how to but for the life of me I just could not get my gears changing correctly, main stumble was not having a bike stand, took the bike to my local bike shop and had it adjusted correctly and it only cost £5! best £5 i'v spent in years 👍
