Thank you for this video. I’m a baby nurse in the ED, almost done with orientation. I’ve only given blood once so far (with my preceptor) so I wanted to find a video to help me brush up on this skill because I’m sure it will come up again in the ED. Side note: I really enjoyed nurse Rose. ☺️

Amazing explanation

The most common blood transfusion reactions are: fever, chills, urticaria and itching. The signs of a more serious transfusion reaction are: respiratory distress, low blood pressure, high fever and dark urine. Among the signs of an allergic reaction are hives, rash, itching. The signs of an anaphylactic reaction are usually: flushed skin, hives, itching, swelling, difficulty breathing, wheezing, blue lips, vomiting, diarrhea and low blood pressure. A febrile non-hemolytic reaction is the most common, and occurs when the receiver’s white blood cells responds to the donor’s blood - in that case the temperature will usually rise to 38C/100.4F so fever and chills will be experienced. Sceptic transfusion reaction occurs when the blood is contaminated, and usually include these symptoms: fever, chills and low blood pressure. An accute hemolytic transfusion reaction is rare. It occurs after about 24h when the donor’s red blood cells are being destroyed. Symptoms include: chills, low blood pressure, flank/back pain and red/brown urine, renal problems. A TACO reaction is when there is a circulatory overload - a pulmonary oedema occurs. Symptoms include: tachypnea, coughing, shortness, tachycardia and high blood pressure. A delayed hemolytic/serologic transfusion reaction occurs after 1 day to 4 weeks after the transfusion. Symptoms include: fever, jaundice, abdominal pain, dark urine, high blood pressure and dyspnea or labored breathing. Check your nursing books for more accuracy. If you witness any of these symptoms, stop the blood transfusion STAT and notify the MD. It is crucial to monitor closely when administering blood products and ask the receiver to notify the team quickly if they experience any of these symptoms.
