How to Aim Using the Notch setting on a Heckler&Koch G3/HK91 Drum Rear Sight.

You cannot understand how much research I have done to find an official HK source about the proper use of the V notch. Even in an original manual that I have seen, they don't explain it. I was in the Greek army and they didn't explain it ether. They just showed us a diagram of a generic diopter sight and next to it was a generic v notch sight. More like an AK. It gave the impression that the first sight picture you showed was the correct one. So that's what I used. Resulting in hitting sort of the target. I wasn't the problem, because at 300m, I was the best in the firing line lol

Yup, using the small v notch works, and yes, there is almost no instructions on the internet or any source about how to use the G3 open sight. In my opinion, the “box” method I mentioned truly drew the full potential of the G3 open sight.

0:55 This is the way I have used the notch to greatest success. If zeroed properly, consistent hits out to 300 yards (about 274 meters) are no problem on silhouette sized targets using this method of alignment. I recognize that the notch was intended mostly for low light or "closer" engagements, but it can be used out farther as well. The method you show at 1:13 *CAN* be used, especially for closer distances (50 yards and in for example) but I don't think it would be the best too much past that, mostly because keeping the front post centered consistently would be a challenge.

For longer distance the other three peep holes works much better. The notch is intended to be used for closer distance

@@Bana-Nami They are intended that way, yes. Out to 300 yards I personally prefer the notch over the peep because less of the target is obscured.

@@danielgreen6547 if you can master both ways you don’t even need to rotate the drum and it will cover the range from 30m to 300m!
