That small plyable plastic piece you removed is there to act as a mini passive radiator. It was engineered to tighten up the bass and give it more detail. by removing it you may get a bit more bass but it will be more inaccurate and uncontrolled (boomy). If you are listening to the Q701 on a amplifier or receiver/amp and want a bit more bass extension with this unit switch on the "loudness" button if your have one.

Engineering theory is just theory here. I have a K701 and a very critical listeng attitude for last decades. In practice by removing the plastic piece the bass remains detailed but it will be more even and extended a bit. I have several excellent DIY amplifier. All of them can drive the K701 very well without boomy bass. I really hate boomy bass. Do you think that shitty plastic piece is mechanically linear without any viscoelasticity ? Better to remove that thing for more detailed bass as I did 3 years before. Greetings, a mechatronic engineer. :)

@@aklankrisz Hey man, so would I be correct to assume that if I leave plastic disc in place and add a little porous tape over it, the bass will be lessened and possibly tighter?? Cheers

You're right, I tried this mod today but ended up reverting. Although it does increase the bass by a few decibels or so, the dynamics and bass slam are noticeably a bit worse. I can see how this might be worth it for someone who values sound signature over dynamics, but then it would be easier and better to just use EQ in my opinion.

By doing this, they simply increase the time of decay overtones of the speaker itself, worsening the final sound quality, if there is enough damping margin and the upper middle does not scream, then it is better to seal all these bass ports tightly. And if you need bass, then increase it due to the design of the case, denser ear cushions and meshes on the partitions. Even if you just fill the headphone case in the front chamber with a lot of foam rubber, the bass will already increase, but you should understand that the rest of the frequencies will start to become cloudy from the increased bass.

Watched this tutorial several times and allowed for 300+ hours of burn-in with Q701's before deciding to go ahead with it. In my experience having a good DAC and amp does not magically produce a deeper low-end response on these. Between a Schiit Gungnir and Asgard 2 (>$1000 of gear) I knew the inputs were not an issue (not to mention that all of my other headphones sounded full and well-rounded with this set-up). I immediately noticed pushier/throatier bass that matched the sound profile I was hearing from my Adam A7X monitors (renowned for their flat response). The bass is not blown-out or even incredibly forward after performing this modification but is noticeably accentuated and no longer feels lacking in the way it was before. Thank you for taking the time to show how simple it is to make this modification. P.S. Removing the housing from the left can is, as you said, very similar but should be performed with the headphones directly on a table because when the housing becomes detached it will pull the mini-XLR wiring with it.

Thx for weighing in. There are those who feel very passionately against this mod but again, I'd kindly point them back to AKG as the source for the bass mod when they produced variants. They obviously knew what was going on... Also, thx for the tip on the left housing. My Q701's have been on hiatus since I moved so haven't gotten around to doing the other cup yet.

turboBB73 As with anything in life, if you don't like it you should change it. You and I clearly felt less than satisfied with the bass on the Q701 so we did something about it, others may have been satisfied and so they chose not to change anything. One of the reasons why I decided to go ahead with this was the lack of negative reports from people who actually tried this mod. Seems pretty silly to get so upset over a simple (and easily reversible) experiment. If the change were really dramatic I doubt AKG would have flip-flopped on the sticker between units as you mentioned.

Unlike other headphones, the Q701's don't have a huge impedance change in the bass range, usually stays at 60-80ohms range, higher than 1000hz and you start to see growth meeting 120ohms near 20kHz, the Sennheiser HD 598 has a typical impedance of 60ohm and a 300ohm peak at 100hz, this will create distortion on a bad amp with high impedance output.

Hey I know it's been a few years since you posted it, but your video really helped me out! Thank you! Recently the right side of my Q701's stopped working so I used your video to learn how to open them up. I was able to successfully re-solder the connection, and I did the bass mod while I had them apart! I love it, my cans literally went from zero to hero!

Thank you! very informative video. I just used this video to fix my new AKG Q701. it just tipped over gently on my desk while on a headphone stand. the light fall resulted in no sound out of the right ear cup. After following your disassembly instructions, I found a white wire broke off where it was soldered. I soldered it back on. Now it is all good!

I did this mod and there definitely is a improvement to bass response. Which overall improved the sound significantly. Now movies, music and games sound fuller and boulder then ever before And a added bonus I can use these headphones with my samsung smartphone which now has more volume. So this mod does work and is worth doing. I have rediscovered these headphones and now are my go to cans for all my audio listening needs.

I was afraid of doing it to my K701 headphones. They sounded pretty cool, but it's true they have a little too much middles, sometimes resulting in a bit "metalic" sounding. But I like plain response and I was afraid about if the mod could cause excessive bass enhance. However, the result has been great, the sound now is good balanced, the basses are present but not too much highlighted. Thank you very much for your guide.

Ok. I modded my green Q701. Don't have the money for one more pair of cans. There are cons and pros. Pros: A lot more of sub bass and impact. Lows have just much more volume. You can easily hear distortion in lower extension iff exists with purpous in track. Sounds warmer in some cases. No more shrilled highs. Sounds even more like speakers now! Cons: Lesser sound stage. Bass is sometimes a bit muddy when solo (maybe it is recording). I can say a complitley new cans.. :) Brilliant. :) No boring bright sound anymore.

The K7XX has less room to work with, but the disassemble is the same. The mod worked really well on my unit, I'm now getting a good bit more bass. Still want to call out even with the mod, the strength of the bass I get is still a little less than my ATH-AD700. In my opinion Audio Technica is already weak on pronouncing the bass. So if anyone is thinking this mod will change the sound signature significantly, well, don't expect that. It's a good improvement if you are getting really flat bass and want to hear a bit more from the bass drum, go for it, you'll hear the bass drum a lot clearer, but if all you listen to is piano and classics, then it would make little difference. Thanks turboBB73 for making this video, I now have a nice set of cans balanced for every type music I listen to.

3 years already? Well, I recently upgraded to THX AAA amp and after the amp upgrade, the bass start to feeling going all over the place when listening to music with mixer heavy bass end. Nothing bad for Rock music though. I put the two pieces of films back on my K7XX to see if helps. It does tighten up the bass much better and surprisingly it also affects the high hats sounds significantly, it's sort of more clear but softer. (and ofc some vocal's feeling similar) I guess this probably will never be an issue for an audiophile with decent equipments, but for casual user with limited spending on audio DACs and AMPs, this is definitely learning. I guess don't mod this if you have good DAC/AMP and do the mod if you are just driving it from phone or low end DAC/AMPs. (My old one is Fiio e10k btw)

for the K712s out there !!!!!! you just have to turn the little mesh cap ANTI-clock wise !!!!!!! that is it !!!! no picking required !!!!!!!! just turn it. it is abit tricky to do, i just use 2 needle to create handles so i can turn. be very careful there are wires underneath, dont go too deep.

I find that the Q701 works best with a warm dac and a warm amp. My Titanium HD (Burr Brown DAC) and Matrix M-stage are both on the warm side and together they make the Q701 perfect. If you want more bass you'd better extend your hi-fi collection. There are different cans for different purposes. The Q701 is a headphone with a great detailed and spacious sound for its price, with good tight bass, but not very high in quantity. I recently ordered a pair of Fostex headphones from Massdrop to use for listening to more bass-oriented genres. I have no doubt though that I will be using it interchangibly with my Q701 depending on what fits my mood and choice of music for the moment.

What you did reminds me of something. We have Ducatis' club, sports car club, and some owners do not want to invest in exhaust, or while waiting for aftermarket exhaust to arrive they take out the inside of OE tailpipe, or muffler in cars. Yeah I mean they sound louder but definitely not the nice bassy of aftermarket equipment. AKG's sound signature is unique and that's why it is AKG. This bass mod feels strange to me. One cannot alter 1 thing without affecting others. i mean increase low end while mid and high unaffected, or the low end sounds hollow not actually dense bass. But hey, it is your headphone :-)

I just did this mod on my K712's. Yeah, you're probably thinking they have enough of a bass boost but they felt squelched somehow.. after doing the mod the sub bass went up a bit and it doesn't feel as held back. Soundstage makes a bit more since to my ears now. Then again I'm used to Fostex TH600/TH900's so I'm used to sub bass punch and these are now closer.

For me personally, yes, but as mentioned the changes were subtle and limited to sub bass region. If you look at this thread (www.head-fi.org/t/660408/reversible-akg-k701-bass-mod), you'll see that just as the people who posted comments here, you have proponents for and against this mod (but mostly for). The good thing is that it's reversible in case you don't like it. I also forgot that my initial listening experiences were amp'd since my XPS8700 came with the SB Recond3D that has 600 ohm dedicated headphone amp.

Just want to share something with people who own or think of buying these headphones. The reason why most people feel like their AKG's have no bass is because people are not amping them properly. People see in the specs that they're 62 ohm headphones, and think they're easy to drive. Well, let me tell you, as someone who owns the Sennheiser HD650 (300-550 ohms), Beyerdynamic DT880 (600 ohm) and Beyerdynamic T1 (600 - 1300 ohms), which are my highest impedance headphones (highest on the market too), and you might also assume hardest to drive, AKG K701's/Q701's are harder to power than any of them. Why? They lack sensitivity. Their sensitivity is extremelly low compared to other headphones at a similar price, and they really need a very powerful amplifier. A lot of people plug them into cheap 100-200 dollar Fiio, O2, etc. amps or soundcards (even Asus Essence ST or STX fits this category) that might look like they have power on paper, but in reality, they don't sound good at all with these headphones. These are probably one of 2 or 3 headphones under 1000 dollars that REALLY will benefit from using a high end amp. This is why you shouldn't really buy these headphones unless you can invest in a proper headphone amplifier, becuase you will be missing out on what makes these headphones so special and what made them so be so loved back before stuff like HD800's and T1's came out and skyrocketed the prices of headphones from 400-500 dollars to 1500-2000 dollars. Most headphones sound the same when plugged into a entry level $100 headamp and a $1000 higher end headamp. These? Nope...their bass extension, presence and tightness greatly increases when used with a really good amplifier, and their overall speed, attack and dynamics increase greatly compared to cheap amps while listening to the same volume, they simply sound far more lively and fun. With cheap amps like O2 you have to listen at high volumes, otherwise they sound dull, boring, flat, lacking bass or any sort of punch. With better amps, you get the fullness of music at lower volumes as well. I was shocked to find how much better my K701 and Q701's sounded when I switched from a 300 dollar chinese Little Dot Mk5 amplifier (which sounded absolutely fine with other headphones) to a 1000 dollar Musical Fidelity M1 headphone amplifier. Basically, you'll get a better sound by spending 1500 dollars on a K701 + a high end amp than by spending 1500 dollars on a 1100-1200 dollar pair of headphones and a cheap amplifier. Why? K701's are still absolutely world class headphones, if it wasn't for slight coloration in the upper midrange, I'd say they're the best at under 1000 dollars. Nothing up to that price beats them when it comes to dynamics, soundstage size, transient response, flatness of frequency response, etc. Ironically, what works against them is their low price. They're too cheap. Until a few years ago they were absolutely the best consumer grade (excluding exotic stuff like Stax) headphones in the world, better than HD600, HD650, DT880, DT990, etc. when paired with proper equipment. Now they sit too low compared to new high end headphones which costs 4-5 times more, and people who don't know anything about the history of these headphones assume they're considerably worse and that they can use them with poor equipment like it's the case with other 200-300 dollar headphones. Well, that's simply not true, and that's the reason why most people who own the K701 never get to hear what these headphones can really do.
@sleepnaught

derbigpr500 Can you really call it a great pair of headphones if it requires 3 times the price of headphones in other gear to get it to sound good? Recently picked up a pair of the HD 598s and it whipes the floor with the Q701s. Granted, I'm using one of those "cheap" headphone amps, Schiit Magni and a Sound Blaster Z sound card, but I think that makes the Sennheiser's that much better. You don't need to invest a small fortune to make these headphones sound fantastic.

There are three prongs on the mesh piece. They're at the 1 o'clock, 5 o'clock and 10 o'clock positions. It doesn't matter if you're exactly on the prong. Just twist it counter clockwise and it should rotate. It'll move like a few millimeters which will let you know it's out of the socket. Afterwards, take a thin knife and carefully pry off the black mesh cover.

UPDATE 7/20: I should clarify that my comments on the sound were while hooked up straight to my Dell XPS un-amped. I just hooked these up to an old Kenwood receiver (KR-V8060) and the bass increase is slightly more discernible. Again, I hear it in the sub bass rather than mid's. As for changes to sound stage, I'm still exploring that but thus far I do notice a constant albeit subtle imbalance (I still haven't mod the left cup yet). Will be cloning tracks in Vegas to eliminate potential imbalances with the tracks I'm testing with and providing further updates here.

Don't have the K612's so can't comment on those but if you're going to use the Q701 for the genres you cited without an amp and without EQ then yeah I'd recommend you look elsewhere. The bass is there but it's a different quality and type then what you're likely looking for. However, as I posted in my follow up comment, I hooked these up to an old receiver (for the amp) and boosted the bass and reduced the treble slightly and these sound absolutely terrific for me while watching movies as well as listening to the genres you mentioned. I like them much better than the highly vaunted NAD VISO HP50 (I know, apples to oranges but it at least gives you a reference point).

I also picked up the Aune T1 Mk 2 from the recent massdrop (where they included the Genalex Lion 6922 tube) but to be honest, it sounds quite good from this old Kenwood receiver I'm currently using. I've had problems with distortion boosting bass via EQ but not so using the knobs on the receiver. Please check out the long Q701 appreciation thread on head-fi for lots of great info as well as suggestions on amps.

Don't know for certain but it's been mentioned on forums that it was supposed to modulate the bass (and other) frequencies and that supposedly some batches didn't come with that sticker but I've only ever had this and the AKG 7XX and both came with the sticker applied.

A few hundred? I see the AKG 701/2 right around 100 Euros and the 712, which needs no bass mod - it has really balanced and transparent sound costs 199 Euros new in a lot of places. Maybe you're in another country or they simply got cheaper over the years...

There's a lot of discussion about "improving the bass" in a Q701. Here's my take: I've got both the Austrian K701 and the Austrian Q701. There is no question...the Q701 is already enhanced. That is, it's very subtly coloring the sound. For me, it's not a reference headphone. The K701 will tell you the truth about whatever you're listening to. (I also have the HD600, which are a true reference headphone).

I actually am doing just that (but simple bass/treble on my Kenwood receiver and not full blown EQ). The problem is that it assumes you're ever only using this headphone with a single piece of equipment which might not always be the case so then you'd also need a portable amp/EQ setup. I also tend not to like software based EQ as I find that more often than not, it creates distortion.

I've actually noticed a pretty large increase in low end base. Combined with the amp I use I compared it to how it was before and came out pretty satisfied. Thanks for the tutorial. However I ended up accidentally ripping one of the interior cords on the left side with the headphone jack, I had to rap the cord around and tape it with a very small piece of electrical tape. Given that definitely isn't the best fix, i just hope that it doesn't harm the audio quality.

A stupid way, it increases the decay time of the overtones of the speaker itself, worsening the final sound quality that it produces. If the speaker has already been set to the limit by engineers, you shouldn’t go there, if you need bass, it’s better to work with filling the front chamber of the case with some kind of acoustic foam, denser meshes on the baffles of the case separating the rear and front chambers of the headphones and denser ear cushions.

You have to look at how you are using these headphones and what you are using to drive them. I have a set of Q701s' (Austrian Made, not the poorly made chinese rubbish) and a set of K701s' and I use them for mixing and mastering (along with a good quality set of monitors) with DAW programs (Digital Audio Workstations such as Protools). I can plug them straight into my mixing desk which acts as an audio interface or straight into a studio quality headphone pre-amp to drive these and the sound quality, sound stage, frequency range and depth is outstanding and up there with many other high end models I have used straight out of the box without the mod. If I did the mod I can assure you for my application I would be hearing a completely different sound to what was actually recorded / mixed / mastered. So application is the key....how are you going to use them and in what environment? There is also the belief by some audiophiles that headphones need to be 'burned in', refering to the practice of playing music continuosly through new heaphones for 100-200 hours to wear them in so to speak. Theory has it that the diaphrams in the drivers are somewhat brittle when the headphones are new and after a few hundred hours they soften up and sound quality is improved. there are two schools of thought to this, whether this actually works or if the whole theory is bullshit. This depends on who you listen to, some swear by it, others think its rubbish. I can say on my own experience my Q701s' new compared to my 10 year old K701s' sounded a little cold when new and after a few hunderd hours of regular use the sound is comparable now, much warmer so that they are almost identical to a blind test. Who knows???...But treat them like a new pair of sneakers maybe... To get the most out of them you have to drive them to get the full soundscape and potential as mentioned in an earlier comment, if you want a set of headphones to listen to your ipod or iphone then go buy a set of cheap Beats by Dre that are bass heavy, muddy sounding and uncomparable to AKG Q/K 701s'. Again, I emphasise, it depends on the application. If you just use these for listening to your HiFi / CD's / watching movies / DVD's then the mod may be the right way to go for you. But for me, It would be like going to McDonalds' for a salad. My question would be why go messing with something that has been developed by audio engineers at a company that specialises in high quality audio equipment? If used with the right equipment in the right environment adjustments in frequency response can be done before the sound reaches the headphones.

Ok a simple feedback coming from a music industry professional. TLDR - the mod works, but for me it does too much. Be advised and save everything you need to reverse it, might not suit you. Long version - 1. Bassmod improves bass response A LOT. I mean fcking lot, its around 4-5 db on everything lower then 120hz or so. 2. The effect is actually quite ambivalent - i would say that effect overall is actually interesting, sometimes pleasing and amusing. But as a professional i have to admit that the mod ruins this headphones as a reference tool. I would say 2-3 db less and it would make my pair of q701 the best headphones i ever used. But now i guess i reverse the mod and try to get a pair of k712, since i've heard they are basically the q701 with a better base response.

I felt similarly after taking the stickers out. After pondering a few solutions I put the stickers back on and poked a few holes into them with the pushpin until I was pleased with the sound. That gave the driver more airflow to move but not so much that it overpowers the neutral characteristics of the headphones. Careful with the poking or you may damage the driver.

Sorry but that doesn't make any sense - numerous contradictions. If you, like me, are suddenly hearing low bass notes and beats that you didn't hear before - or could barely hear so you wouldn't know how it would have sounded on a set of speakers, etc. - then it's now a better reference tool than it was before. Further, you can't say that it doesn't do too much (ostensibly to the mids and highs) and then say it ruins them as a reference tool. You also can't say it doesn't do too much, but that after doing the mod there is an actual "amusing" effect. That makes very little sense. I did the mod and the only thing that changed was the sub-bass response. And I'm using these with professional caliber amps in both a Teac UD503 DAC and a MyTek Brooklyn DAC+, both of which boast highly regarded headphone amplifier sections.

I tried the mod on my k712, just to see what all this buzz was around. Hmm, I kept the two little rubber tapes that covered the back of the drivers carefully in a drawer, as I am not a newbie anymore and want to reverse the process if needed... My opinion : people who thinks this mod is worth doing did not hear with care the results - or should buy new ears :) The added 5db in the bass range to up to 120 hz and even higher puts a veil on highs for sure. No more air in Fagen or Steely Dan ! Scene seems congested and separation within instruments is much less effective. Moreover it creates a huge bump in the 100-200 hz region making impacts muddy and overall bass is ...too much ! ...BTW I totally agree with the 2 first comments : these headphones scale very well with amps and do have bass, slightly rolled off in the 40hz and below, but very linear curve so OK for me, there is still impact on sub-bass for sure. Anyway Thx for the video and the mod, nice contribution. ...but if you like your gear - and still have respect for your music library and your ears, I strongly recommend you keep that 2 small rounded plastic tapes in a safe place so that u can stick them back untouched... Just my 2 cents Happy listening !

No it's not the same. This is like blocking a subwoofer's reflex hole, what you get a more of a 'pop' from the bass, removing it allows the bass to travel out freely, resulting a more strengthened bass feel, it's both good and bad depending on what you are doing. As a monitor headphone you want the 'pop' because you want to hear everything clearly without letting some details getting covered by the more punchy bass, but for listening to music as most people buy these for, it makes more sense to let the bass out. Let's be honest, do you really miss much while listening to music? or would you rather listen to 'flat' music? I think that's a personal choice. In your words, this is more like a choice between getting a crazy wild lambo or a precisely controlled porsche. Or if you really like Ferrari, do you drive with traction control on or off?

There is no real difference in sound beetween Q701 and K701. They are using the same drivers and housing. Your talking about audiophile bullshit. The K701 are the same sounding ones like 702 (With detachable cable) And even there some people are talking nonsense about: "Sounds different." This is complete crap! Illusion. The Q701 have the same specs as AKG K701 and so on. There is only a minimal variation in production, but i doubt that anyone will hear a difference between K701/ K702 and Q701. And as i said: There is no need for bass if the headphone out delivers enough horsepower. Instead of other headphones the AKG have no sounding in Bassrange but will go down to 10Hz if the amplifier wouldn crop at 20Hz. You have got bad teached ears, thats all. I even dont need to tweak bass at all and the bass is strong enough.

To add. Your earpads are fairly new. This maybe is the point where you better should have waitet for them gettin formed to your head. The new ones wont fit exactly which will reduce lower frequency response. As soon as they fit your ears, the AKG K701/ Q701 and K702 will become well sounding HP. You modded your HP before it even could sound good.

+turboBB73 Hey, thanks for responding. Mine are made in Austria, I bought them in 2012. I didn't open them with the intention of modding them, but rather because, having not dropped them, I found them on my desk with the cable hanging out with the three mini XLR wires exposed. Your video was absolutely invaluable, and it was indispensable in getting these open, but when I removed the cover, a yellow wire that was pulled taut, and poorly soldered came loose. Apparently that's a not too uncommon a problem. I got it done, but sadly the soldering iron caught the side of the plastic cover and melted a small nick in it; now, whether that will affect the sound too much is a moot point, but cosmetically, it'll always bug me. I also had to stick a piece of paper as a sort of shim, to stop the XLR connector falling out. While I'm on it, the clear plastic strip that connects the leather headband to the inside of the cans, has also cracked and broken. So I wouldn't think the Chinese version would be a step down from this, surely that's not possible!

+turboBB73 +ahmed Gamal I dropped my Q701s tonight, and the right driver cut out entirely. Granted I've used them heavily for maybe two years now, it was still quite the bummer. After some research, I found that the poor soldering was, as you said, not an uncommon problem, so I watched this video for the steps on disassembling the thing. I ran into a small problem though... The left large clamp on the left cup does not want to budge, and I am reluctant to use excessive force in fear of breaking it. +turboBB7, you made no mention of it, but is that normal? How should I proceed?

If it did, manufacturers wouldn't make changes then... :D To each their own, why worry what others like/don't like? In the end, this isn't the Mona Lisa, it's a mass produced headphone that's gone through various iterations throughout the years. Case in point, the just look at the K iterations, one can argue that each release was a "mod" of the original... After all the housing is all the same, and if they changed the driver, well I dunno about you but they basically "mod'd" the original and just renamed it something else.
