In this video I tackle the AKG K712. Removing the original 3 pin mini xlr and installing a 4 pin to allow it to take a balanced input.
The key to getting the old socket out is to heat it up beyond the surrounding plastic's glass transition temperature. To do that, I ended up pressing a soldering iron to the inside of the metal part of the socket until I was able to pull it free.
This is not easy and not without it's dangers so only attempt this if you feel you know what you are doing. For this mod I used an REAN 4 pin mini xlr chassis mount socket. It is slightly longer than the original but a little bit of dremeling and it fits perfectly
