it's uncanny how the KZfaq golf algorithm suggest videos. I was struggling with trying not to flip my right elbow while swinging and then this video pops up in my feed. Thanks J

A key that helped me get my butt back (hips) and elbow in front was the thought to drive my left hip back with my right elbow.

This little move added a fair bit of power for me (all well as a slight pull-hook tendency, which I'll have to learn to dial back)

@@chrispatterson1496 A few years ago I saw Tiger doing an exaggerated drill where he pushed his butt back as a first move from the top. When I incorporated this pushing of the butt back I was amazed how much power it created. It changed my game. And I have always known the importance of getting the right elbow deep. Glad it helped!

The hip flexion part was a game changer for me. Looking back on it, it’s almost common sense that in order to get the right elbow in front, the hips have to flex, with the chest inclination increasing as a result. I tried for many months to get the right elbow unstuck without increasing hip flexion in the transition. Was a disastrous dead end. At first when I started doing it properly, I found that it made my club steeper, but only bc my arms hadn’t adjusted to the new body angle. Once I got that taken care of my swing is starting to come along Thanks for a great video!

Been thinking about transition a lot lately. I like to let the arms drop in to position by releasing the hips, without dipping. Plenty of greats dip the head a little.

Absolutely, all the greats lower down. Normally from the effects of hip flexion 👍🏼

For me, feeling like my arms/hands hang in space as I transition gives me enough time to start turning my lower body and post my left leg, my arm basically do what they need to do.

Just establish the grip with elbows bent 90° and shaft vertical with a correct Vardon grip with pad of trail hand wrapped or the lead thumb on the trail side of the grip and then bend at hips and let weigh of club pull the lead arm straight. The way the Vardon grip overlaps and locks the hands together will force the forearms to ( ) internally rotate against each other. Keep a bit of bend in the trail arm and then apply downward pressure on lead hand with pad of trail hand. You should feel considerable opposing torque in the forearms that increases the more you press down with the trail hand. Both hands will be pronated downward and trail wrist will be forced into extension when waggling the club. The counter torque will constrict how you and waggle. Keep club head low and take it back with hips and shoulders together and the momentum will pull lead arm closer to chest and extension in the trail hand maxing out at 45° will force the trail arm to fold elbows down and externally rotated very consistently - the genius of the Vardon grip properly applied. On a caused and effect level what the gripping in air and lowering, rotating the forearms does is put the ulna and radius of both arms in the middle of their 180° range of rotation at address and again at impact which allows the hands the club head to swing 180° around them without being pulled away from the body and changing the club head radius relative to to the center of rotation under the body. It makes the folding of the trail arm in the backswing and folding of the lead arm in the finish extensions mirror images of each other producing a feeling that the club head is in a groove due to the way the elbows folding reoriented the toe of the club before it whips around the hands in the backswing and finish. It’s all explained by the physics but Hogan figured it out via trial and error and intuition. The secrets are in Five Lessons but only if you actually perform them page by page and also study Hogan’s swing frame by frame like I did 😊

Great drills. I'm glad I saved an old wedge that I don't mind standing on 😊. I'm considering getting a tour striker smart ball but already have something similar. It's like a big rubber ball with two large grooves in it for the forearms. It's half yellow and half blue with dimples on it like a golf ball. I think I've seen one like it on one of your videos Jonathan. Would you say that it's as good as the tour striker smart ball?. It doesn't have a strap to put around the neck like a smart ball so I guess that's one thing about it that isn't quite as good.

What other kind of ball do you recommend using for a training aid if we don't have the one you used

Anything around the same size which you can easily hold. You can buy these training aids from China really cheap. They're pretty much a beach ball that you blow up with air. Very light weight

Great lesson 👍 Been practicing this for a few weeks now. It's a challenge with the longer clubs like 6 iron and up but much easier with 9 8 and 7. With the long clubs you really have to trust that your rotation will be good enough to contact ball first and not dig the turf 3 inches behind the ball and break your fingers 😂

In step 3, your head dips down toward the ball. In my opinion, this is not good for consistent ball striking.

Every pro dips. Look at some footage. And it works for amateurs as well. Keeping your head level is old style golf and (with other things) keeps you from swinging freely and relaxed. Wooden man golf.

Swinging the entire club on plane in unison from address to follow through requires that right arm support. You crash through the ball with the complete club length not just the club head with a flip or flick. Focus and conceptualize on swinging the entire golf club. Visualize it always.
