Hey good day, I am a certified pest control applicator with 8years of experience, sometimes I do Rodent proofing just like this one I can surely say your installation is impressive and it would surely work however here are some pro tips. Use dry wall screws to install the hardware cloth unto the foundation board for a stronger more lasting hold because if any weight should be added to the soil on top of the metal cloth it would easy pull and break the staples loose from the foundation board, also try using useing metal pegs to secure the base of the metal mess resting in the soil so the digging Rodent won't easily push away the metal cloth as he is digging and pushing forward.❤ good job on the the escaped route 👏 👍 it is a grade A installation, but with those tips it would be a A+

This hardware cloth size is too big for mice. It must be 1/4 inch or smaller. :-(

Hi Gord, thanks for the comment and support! I didn't put a one-way door in, but I did use a smoke bomb with everything wide open before I started. And I was making a lot of noise during this project, so I think I scared away any last critters. Thanks for the quick reply. I am pretty sure whatever is under mine only emerges at night as I’ve seen the rocks I place have been moved. Will try a few tactics to encourage whatever it is to leave and not return. Really don’t want to get get surprised by an angry skunk or raccoon while I’m digging the trench. My shed is 8x8

Very nice! Yup... everything is still good now (January 2020). No issues or animals whatsoever!!! The first winter I would find little skunk snow paw prints trying to dig under my shes but they couldn’t 😎

JUST did it this week. I used 4 ft x 25 ft mesh wired fencing to do my backyard fencing. Bent it at the 1 ft margin leaving 3 ft for the height portion. Stapled it along all 3 sides of my fence. Hoping for the best right now.

elyse cueto You’re welcome! Critters are tricky. If a wood door, you could simply patch it with a new wood patch label screwed in. If new plastic shed, you should be good. Just block all holes to keep squirrels out!! Let me know how the project goes! 😎👍🏻

Hi Brian, I did not have to tie it together at the corners because that is where my cinder block foundation was, so I essentially went and overlapped the wire with the blocks, and then buried them down into the ground. There technically is a slight gap at the corners (where the wire does not meet each side of the rectangle shaped shed, but no animal could get in because it is still just block, wire, or gravel. No air gaps for them to get into.

klbelt When smoking critters out ideally you want to leave one escape route for them to flee. But then afterwards you can plug it up. See my other smoke bomb video too for help :)

Ken Trock I was thinking the same thing. My dog is small and would chase anything that goes under my shed, so I’m gonna go ahead and start this project tomorrow. Seems easy enough.

As per a neighbor, groundhogs have eaten through the wood at the base of their shed.

Yes what I have heard his the chewing that could happen if the critter become trapped under the shed due to snow etc. I was with you. I don’t mind critters taking shelter. But I don’t want them to chew up my shed either. So I’m going to be proactive a prevent the habitat.

Check out the video. I stapled wire mesh to the shed lower wooden structure and buried the wire mesh into the dirt. Hope this helps.

@@wildcatDIY the water will stand under shed and cause it to rot from moisture from the floor get gutters away from foundation or will sink the blocks down deeper then it sits on dirt directly weight pushes mud with no effort. plus no major air flow will cause rotten as well in high moisture areas..

One may even consider some of the pellet guns up to .22 caliber that have suppression. They could be used for rabbit hunting even. They could still be heard but they’re not that loud. Just a thought.

Nope. Gravel hurts their paws so they give up. And then the wire mesh is like a fence. Almost impossible for critters to get in 😀

We had a groundhog dig under a house slab. We found out because there was a pile of gravel against the house, and a big hole. So yes they can dig through gravel. Our shed guy told us to dig an 8" trench all around like in the end of this video.

Our big problem is how do we attach the hardware cloth? We don't have that nice wooden trim around the edge like you do. And what is this method called, does it have a name?

Depends on the perimeter but I usually charge $800-1500 for similar job.

Nope not yet almost three years or so later! My shed partially on a slab. And the rest of it is on cinder blocks so the water never touches any shed wood 👍👍

Art Tafil In theory they could but they won’t because they are dumb rodents. They will seek out other sheds or shelters that don’t take as much effort.

unhwildcat333, Maybe where you’re from but here in Knoxville, Tennessee the woods rats tunnel under wire mesh and come in and eat the plywood flooring in about a four from the outer edge of the siding! Even with my German Shepherd outside some of them get in the shed. My Shepherd digs massive holes to access their tunnels. That’s how I know what they do. We constantly find rat carcasses in the yard where she’s snapped their backs or necks. When I go inside of the shed I carry my 22 LR Sig Sauer loaded with rat shot. I’ve shot over a dozen trying to get out of the holes.

Yes, you sure can! All of the parts that I used the chicken wire did not have a slab under it - just normal shed with air under those parts (where animals could get into before this project). Hope that helps! Good luck :)
