Now I understand the logic behind singlish “can” sentences.

I am only starting my journey to learning Mandarin Chinese and I'm happy to have come across your channel. Your examples using movies are very catchy. Hoping to see more of your content and learn from them.

I like how you use clips from Chinese shows and movies to illustrate, it's a good way to practice listening to real-life Chinese !

Great content, love the explanation on how to reply yes/no (close ended) question with inclusion of simplified, traditional, pinyin and even zhuyin (bopomofo) on the explanation. Keep it up on making great content

This has always been one of the easier things to me as an English speaker studying Chinese in that we use "have" and "haven't/have not" the same way, both in questions and in possessing something. Whereas in many other languages, the verb "to have" and the phrase "to have done something" are different words. Very interesting similarity!

老師, I've noticed in Taiwan a lot of questions are answered with 有 even if the question isn't a 有 / 沒有 type question. I've heard this is related to 臺語 grammar in some way, is this correct?
@GraceMandarinChineseАй бұрын
I'm not sure if it's solely related to Taiwanese, but it is likely connected. In Taiwan and southern China, “有” is often used as an auxiliary verb to express completion or experience, so when answering whether we've done something, we often use it:)
@woodies2009Ай бұрын
Haha I still quite often get confused with how to answer questions😂

Not having a simple Yes/No in Mandarin is very confusing for me. I always end up freezing up trying to figure out what word to answer with if asked a question in Mandarin (assuming I even understood the question).

It's not a unique practice. In many languages people answer a question by using a verb. Even in English , e.g. "I do" or "I don't"
@GraceMandarinChineseАй бұрын
Yeah, in research papers, they call this the "echo answer/echo answer system", which means that people use repetition to answer questions. It appears in other languages as well.
@jytwangАй бұрын
But the logic of grammar is still different from Chinese. Do and don’t are not verbs here.
@potestasetdecusАй бұрын
@@jytwang Okay... if they are not verbs, then what? :) Please refer yourself to the dictionary prior to do the wrong assertations. And, I'm sorry, but you missed the main idea
@gustavo8221Ай бұрын
@@GraceMandarinChinese In portuguese we do that, but we conjugate the verbs examples: Q: can you guys go? / Vocês podem ir? A: we can / podemos Q: will they travel? / eles vão viajar? A: they will / vão
