In this video, we’re going to be taking a look at how to apply for yachting jobs using super yacht crew agencies, and some best practices when it comes to giving yourself an edge over the competition.
Whether you’re trying to get a job on a yacht with no experience; or, you’ve been working in the industry for a few years, this 3-step formula can work for you:
Step 1: The Hook
Step 2: The Hold
Step 3: The Confirmation
Don’t underestimate the power of making what may seem like very small changes to your yacht crew agency profile, and yacht CV, especially if you’re just about to start yachting. It really can be the difference between getting one of those highly prized yachting jobs for beginners, and getting no job at all.
Here are links to some super yacht crew agencies, including Yotspot and LuxYachts, which I spoke about in the video:
Yotspot: www.yotspot.com/
Luxury Yacht Group: www.luxyachts.com/
Wilsonhalligan: www.wilsonhalligan.com/
Bluewater: www.bluewateryachting.com/cre...
YPI Crew: ypicrew.com/
Hill Robinson Crew: www.hrcrew.com/
Remember to look for more crew agencies online, as they all play a part in helping you to get work on a yacht. Enjoy creating your profiles!

Hi Matt, I’m a 18 years old student from Italy. I’ve always been an “outdoor” tipe of guy, I’ve done sailing, I’m a competitive swimmer, lifesaver, and I love being in the sea with all types of craft (paddle board, sup etc). Now I’m studying at my local university, but recently my life seems to be just not enough for me. The idea of being stuck for five years studying law doesn’t appeal me at all... I’ve stumbled across your videos and it was like an epiphany. I fell in love with the work of a deckhand, not just because of the small moments you can appreciate, but because of the hard work you need to put in to get the job done. My work ethic, as a competitive swimmer, is well developed, and I’ve always loved to do stuff. I remember working months with my dad to fix up the yard just because I had in mind an epic party. I literally watched all your videos and every one of them was great. Coming to the point of the comment, I would love to start a career in yachting. I’m willing to do the courses, and to get some transferable skills by working in a car’s detailer. In addition to my experience in swimming, life guarding, sailing and doing water sports in general I would then add some handy skills like polishing, waxing, painting, varnishing etc.. At the moment I’m a little bit unsure about the precariousness of this job, especially with the pandemic, and my family doesn’t help me at all... Dock walking from April in Palma would be nice to start? Thank you so much!!

Dear Filippo, Thank you for commenting, and for sharing your story. It sounds like you have a lot to offer the yachting industry. It also sounds like you have a good understanding of what a career in yachting entails. I shall nevertheless highlight again that it is very easy to be drawn in by images of yacht crew having lots of fun out on the water, and travelling the world, especially when you're spending all of your time studying at a desk. Making a big career change based on this isn't a wise move, because the reality can be very different. I’m not trying to put you off, but instead just asking you to make sure that it’s definitely what you want before making any big decisions. It is impossible to know what stage the pandemic will be at by April 2021; but, if you do decide that it's a career you want to pursue and there are no restrictions in place, dock walking in Palma would be a great start. Meantime, gaining some additional experience detailing cars would be an excellent idea. I hope that helps, and I look forward to hearing what you decide to do.

@@WorkonaSuperyacht Dear Matt, after a long decision time I decided to pursue my career in the yachting industry. From now I’ll put myself in a position of hireability by doing the basic courses and some more, and doing a job with transferable skills. I have the possibility to gain some actual experience by working in fairly decent s/y owned by a friend of mine. From April I would then go to Antibes and stay in a crew house; hopefully I will have the possibility to dock walk and network. Thanks for your help and your really precious videos!

@Filippo Patini This is a great plan, and I'm pleased to hear you have the opportunity to gain some experience in a shipyard. Additionally, Antibes should provide you with more opportunities for dockwalking, as you will be able to easily reach all the marinas along the Cote d'Azur. Depending on how you get on, Palma is always an option afterwards.

Hello Mika! This video was a response to your request, so I hope you like it. I realised after editing it that I never answered your question about how often you can apply for jobs. The answer is, whenever a job comes up for which you are suitable. What you must avoid doing is applying for jobs where you don't even nearly meet the criteria, because it just clutters up the crew agent's inbox. Do it too much, and they will start to recognise your CV as a nuisance. I hope that helps. Any further questions, please just ask.

This is a well-explained presentation on how to actually get noticed in the new-job market. I've been on both sides of the table stacked with CVs and know the dance well. The new folk just having been educate with a few simple but important facts. The CV is perceived as the absolute best work that you can do. If it's sloppy, then the standard response is to presume that you can't do better. Round-filed! In the CV, you are trying to get them to hire you. It's not a way for you to explain your dream job. Write it to be read by your boss, and his/her's and make them understand how you can do the work they need done, and do it better than the competition. This is why they would hire you, not because they feel sorry for someone who hasn't seen all the world yet.

Hi Matt, finally, I was worried yesterday when your video didn't come out. I was looking for it all day and I finally had to go to sleep. This morning still nothing I started to worry about you wondering if something bad had happened. Well I'm glad to see that all is good. Thoroughly enjoyed your video, and your right there is a collation between what people say and there presentation. You can't say you are a bubbly person and not have a smile on your face, this is a contradiction. As David Geer said "As far as I can see, you have the best educational videos about yachting. Keep up the good work! " Your cross examples between your channel and a persons CV is wright on the money. You have a knack for explaining things in a simple understanding manner. Your viewer comes out of it by saying something like, this is just common sense.

Worth mentioning that as a candidate your social media accounts will be reviewed. If your social media accounts portray a wild party animal or extreme political commentary they can very much shut down the process. When reviewing a candidate that had "no drama person" in their CV, but their facebook page appeared that they wanted to "burn down their country", it was a deal breaker. Another had non-drinker in their CV, but their social media told a very different story, enough to wave off. Just a thought. Thanks for your videos.

@Clyde John Palomo Keep trying! In addition, keep working on your skills (transferable and specific), and updating your CV. When you're just starting, finding work through online agencies alone can be very difficult. To build experience, new crew typically have most success by visiting yachts in person.

Hello dear, Do you think it's a better choice just to go dock walking and not bother with applying online If you already have the chance? I would prefer to talk in person.

Hello Mina. Dock walking is a great way to look for work, but I'd also recommend signing up to at least a few agencies. You don't have to apply for any jobs through them if you don't want to, but being in their database can open up more opportunities.

Would you say there is a large benefit in staying in a crew house over day Airbnb when in search for position of work as a greenie
@WorkonaSuperyacht
@WorkonaSuperyacht 3 жыл бұрын
Hello Aaron. If you're on your own then a crew house will probably work out cheaper, and you'll also be able to network with everyone else who is staying there. However, once you've made a few friends it can work out better to rent an apartment together. People find work at short notice, so there is the added work of finding a replacement when somebody moves out, but that is usually fairly easy to do. I started out in a crew house, which is often paid for on a weekly basis, but once I was more familiar with everything I started to make other arrangements. Where are you planning on going?

@@WorkonaSuperyacht I will be in Fort Lauderdale late January to build up work experience before med season starts

@Aaron Blackmon I don't have any personal experience using crew houses in Fort Lauderdale, but I'd still recommend starting out in one. It's a great opportunity to network, make some friends, and find out how others are getting on looking for work. You can then always make other arrangements once you're there.
