I should have mentioned how refreshing it is to find a tutorial that isn't trying to flog over-priced materials and equipment and explains techniques in such a clear, direct way. Also really nice not to be tortured by background music. So thanks again for your generous help and instruction.

I have a nice old gilded martini glass where the gilding on the exterior side has started to chip off. After watching your video I am considering regilding it myself, would appreciate any tips on the process. Ido a lot of silver smithing so I'm generally familiar with the crafts process, but assume that the prep work will be as important as any regilding process. Lee
@happygilder
@happygilder 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Lee, I've never gilded the exterior of glass so I'm not sure if it's done the same way. You might need to use oil size to paint the glass and then use transfer leaf instead of loose leaf. That's a complete guess though. Sorry I can't help

Hello Sir, how are you, I tried my first glass sandblasting with beautiful design and I painted black border on lettering and now trying to gold leaf 24 ct. on the back of the design where its sandblasted, but having difficulties where the even applying the water size, its look like it gold leaf stuck very well, but brushing softly after 45min the gold leaf is still coming out from some sandblast section, and other side of mirror it is looking very dull gold leaf appearance. any solution for it ? or may be I'm doing something wrong. need help. thank you Aaseef
@happygilder
@happygilder 2 жыл бұрын
Hi, you’ll need to lacquer the sandblasted areas before applying the gold leaf otherwise it won’t stick. I use clear gloss enamel paint, or clear acrylic lacquer. Both will turn the blasted areas clear and the gold leaf will stick to it :)

I wonder if this can be done to automobile glass? Probably not, but would be a super cool if it was possible, and there would probably be a niche market that would pay big $$$ for it. I'm talking "show" cars where glass safety isn't really an issue to consider.
@happygilder
@happygilder 3 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately it won’t work on tempered/toughened glass. I don’t know if glass can be tempered after the glue chipping has been done... Would look awesome on a car though!
@AaronHendu
@AaronHendu 3 жыл бұрын
@@happygilder I wonder if you could laminate a finished piece to the tempered glass, or just have non-tempered custom glass that is only fitted for shows...even some accents on a small "smokers window" could be super cool, especially on some of the older "low riders" and such.

Hi Steve. I usually put in on a heatsource to speed up the chipping, but it could be anything from humidity, glue type, mix ratio etc. that is preventing it from chipping. @@evilsloth2105 I haven't used glass paint so I don't know how it reacts to the size mix. My guess would be it reacted to the heat of the mix because there's nothing it it that would cause a reaction to the paint.

Will the glue chipping process work on acid etched glass (Armor etch) or does it HAVE to be sand blasted? I am a crafter of many many things and have many ideas for some cool smaller projects, and naturally I do not have a sand blaster. So if there is another way to get the chippy glue to work like maybe after etching I could go over it with a dremel using one of those lol sanding bits, would that work? Please someone who knows please let me know.
@happygilder
@happygilder 3 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately it won’t work on acid etched glass. The dremmel method may work if you use the diamond tip, but it would take a long time. You don’t need a large sandblaster like I have. There are mini versions of the cabinet or you could just get a sandblasting gun. You would need a compressor to run both though

@happygilder
@happygilder 3 жыл бұрын
Hi, yes it’s real gold. You have to use more than 1 layer because it’s so thin. If you’re gilding flat glass 2 layers is enough, but with glue chipped glass you’re more likely to get holes where the leaf tears so 3 coats is sometimes necessary :)
