I recently picked up some Milorganite based on my soil tests showing it was very low in both Nitrogen and Phosphorus while high in potassium, which was very surprising. So Milorganite seemed to be what I needed and the Aubuchon Hardware store near me has it much cheaper than Homedepot and Lowes. Its been a little over a month since applying and the lawn is thick, full and dark green. If I never did the soil tests I would have just thrown down more of the regular 24-0-6 I buy cheap at Lowes. I also put down a little iron granules I had left over from last year. My lawn is small around 1,000sf so I calculate based on 100sf areas. I always follow the instructions on the bag and measure out to the ounce.

Way back when, there was some concern that Milorganite might have been a cause of ALS ( Lou Gehrig's Disease). Hi Leonard, we are sorry to hear about your dad's passing. You are correct, there is NO proven research Milorganite has any link to ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis) or Lou Gehrig’s disease. In 1986 epidemiologist Benjamin Brooks, an ALS researcher at the University of Wisconsin Madison, made unsubstantiated claims linking Milorganite to incidents of ALS. Dr. Brook’s comments resulted in an investigation by a research panel made up of epidemiologists from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Medical College of Wisconsin, and Wisconsin State Division of Health. During the investigation Brooks admitted that there was no research that supported the hypothesis to his statements about Milorganite.

The dial numbers on Scotts spreaders indicate the application rate per 1,000 sq ft. For example, set the dial at 6 and you're applying at six pounds per 1,000 sq ft. So, 32 pounds / 2.5 = 12.8. Two passes at a setting of 6.5 gets it done.

Hi, Spring is a good time to have your soil tested to check nutrient and pH levels. You can test the soil yourself using a store-bought kit or contact your local extension, which probably offers soil testing. Knowing the nutrient levels will help ensure you’re adding needed nutrients in the right amount. Grass grows well in slightly acidic soil, between 7.0 to 6.5 pH, allowing it to properly absorb nutrients. Sulfur is more acidic and is used to lower the soil's pH. Lime can be used for acidic soil to raise the pH, so the plant roots can absorb the necessary nutrients from the soil. Only amend your soil if it needs it and only at the recommended rates. Compost can naturally correct pH, which also adds nutrients and conditions soil to remain moist.

Hi, We caution that over-fertilization can result in nutrient runoff into waterways resulting in serious environmental issues. Milorganite's salt-free formula won't burn your lawn, however, your lawn can only take up so many nutrients. Milorganite's application rates and schedule are based on university research, which studied the amount and frequency of nutrients needed for a healthy lawn. For a healthy lawn, we recommend following good lawn care practices such as 4x per year Milorganite fertilization schedule and application rates, proper mowing, aerating, and overseeding. Hi, Maxwell - The PFAS/PFOS issue in biosolids fertilizer is a relatively new issue, and there is no clear indication that our product has created a PFAS build-up that need’s remediation. Experience has shown PFAS concentrations in biosolids vary significantly depending upon local conditions, such as the type of water supply, the presence of fire suppression training sites, and industries that manufacture or use PFAS. For Milorganite® fertilizer, local conditions that contribute to the production of our product favor low concentrations. In fact, in the most recent PFAS sampling for Maine, concentrations for two of the three analyzed compounds were below the level of detection and the third was slightly above the level of detection, confirming minimal PFAS risk. To understand and find solutions to the PFAS problem, Milorganite® fertilizer supports (1) research into the fate of and risk from the PFAS that already exist in commerce and the environment and (2) restrictions on the continuing production and use of these chemicals. The entire water reclamation community is engaged with these issues. No individual producer of biosolids can address these issues alone. Please consider contacting your legislators to support action on these issues. For more information on Milorganite® safety: www.milorganite.com/using-milorganite/safety

It contains no salts, which makes it safe to apply during the summer and in drought conditions when used as directed. I only used 16oz with a handheld spreader, then watered but in a matter days, most of it was gone! It’s hot here in Las Vegas and I did this in late July. Was that the wrong time to use it? Did I use too much? So now, I’m aerating and spreading topsoil before adding a few sod rolls. Where did I go wrong? I’ve got almost a full bag left but I’m afraid to use it again. Your thoughts? Tony
@MilorganiteFertilizer
@MilorganiteFertilizer 11 ай бұрын
Hi, Milorganite contains virtually no salts, so it won’t burn your lawn, trees, shrubs, or plants, even in the hottest temperatures or driest conditions. Extreme drought or disease may be the culprit. When laying sod, first, prep your soil by incorporating several inches of organic matter, such as compost, into the top 6-8 inches of soil. Milorganite should be mixed into the top 2-4 inches of soil before laying sod to help establish and feed the roots. Hi, When you use Milorganite fertilizer, you don’t have to worry about streaks, stripes, or accidentally burning your lawn! It contains virtually no salts, so it won’t burn your lawn, even in the hottest temperatures or driest conditions. We recommend applying Milorganite fertilizer to warm-season grasses, like Bermuda, in early June if you missed your late May application and again in late August or early September. Aerating your lawn can also help improve your lawn. Warm-season grasses can be aerated mid-spring through early summer while the grass is actively growing. Immediately after aeration, your lawn is ripe for overseeding and fertilizing. The holes provide excellent soil exposure for seeds and deliver fertilizer directly to the roots of your grass. @MilorganiteFertilizer
@MilorganiteFertilizer 2 жыл бұрын
Hi! For a quicker spring green-up, we recommend applying Milorganite in the fall. Warm-season grasses should fertilize your lawn with Milorganite in spring after the last frost and once your lawn begins to grow and green. If you fertilize too early, the plant will focus on shoot growth and you will sacrifice root growth. Deep roots help your lawn better withstand drought conditions during the summer months. A good rule of thumb is when daytime temperatures are consistently in the 70s which means soil temperatures are in the 60s. Hi, University research recommends 1 lb of Nitrogen per 1,000 sq ft. One 32lb bag Milorganite covers 2,500 sq. So, you will need about 2 1/2 bags of Milorganite for your lawn. At a rate of 8 lbs of Milorganite per 1,000 sq ft, you would need 48 lbs or 1.5 bags of Milorganite. Hi, Helen - Milorganite fertilizer makes no claims regarding its use as a deer repellent. Research indicates the odor of Milorganite is effective in keeping deer from browsing on food plots and ornamental plantings for up to 5 weeks. The study used an application rate of one-half cup per plant and concluded that reduction of plant damage may further be improved if Milorganite is reapplied at day 14. What's with the recent "forever chemicals" claims made by the Ecology Center and Sierra Club?
@MilorganiteFertilizer
@MilorganiteFertilizer 3 жыл бұрын
Trent, The "forever chemicals" PFAS/PFOS issue in biosolids fertilizer is a relatively new issue, and there is no clear indication that our product has created a PFAS build-up that need’s remediation. Milorganite continues to meet regulatory requirements in all 50 states. For more information on Milorganite’s safety: www.milorganite.com/using-milorganite/safety.

@MilorganiteFertilizer

Hi, Edgar, In spring, fertilize your southern lawn with Milorganite after the last frost and once your lawn begins to grow and green. A good rule of thumb is when daytime temperatures are consistently in the 70s which means soil temperatures are in the 60s. If you fertilize too early, the plant will focus on shoot growth and you will sacrifice root growth. Deep roots help your lawn better withstand drought conditions during the summer months. Avoid fertilizing southern grasses too late in the fall. The grass is trying to go dormant and when you fertilize you’re encouraging it to grow. This may cause your lawn to be less hardy as it enters cold weather and is more susceptible to winter injury. The last time to fertilize, warm-season grasses, in fall is one month before dormancy or the average first killing frost. www.milorganite.com/using-milorganite/rates-and-schedule

Yes go ahead and apply your Milorganite now. Milorganite's application schedule is based on university research which has studied the amount and frequency of nutrients needed for a healthy lawn. Milorganite does not contain any salts so it can be applied during hot summer conditions and will not burn. The warm-season application schedule of Easter, Memorial Day, Labor Day and Early October is based on the grass seed's growing cycle, but applying now won't hurt.

Hi! Milorganite can be applied at any time. It contains no salts, which makes it safe to apply during the summer and in drought conditions when used as directed. Fertilizer salts are responsible for burning lawns and plants. The nutrients in Milorganite will be released when there’s enough water and the temperature is right. Although not necessary, watering in Milorganite will ensure the fertilizer is in contact with the soil and speeds up the fertilization process.

It says right on the bag that for Florida lawns use at a rate of 5000 sq ft per bag and not 2500 sq ft per bag. I'm unsure why - maybe something to do with N conservation. Who knows. I sure it can't harm anything with 2500 sq ft per bag. Maybe something to do with N control for FL and the algae blooms from decades of excessive Nitrogen runoff.
@MilorganiteFertilizer
@MilorganiteFertilizer Жыл бұрын
Hi, Elian - You are correct; excess nitrogen and phosphorus being washed into waterways by rain-is a significant global water pollution problem. Although vital for plants, in excess phosphorus contributes to algae blooms, fish kills, and odors. Industry, agriculture, farming, and construction are major sources of nutrient runoff. Improper fertilization of home lawns can also be a contributor. Per current state regulations, in FL, MD, and MI, you can apply Milorganite two times per year at the rate of 32 lbs per 5,200 sq ft. Milorganites’ slow-release nitrogen and phosphorus are slowly released at rates plants can use. This significantly reduces the likelihood of leaching or runoff that can occur when using chemical fertilizers. For more info: www.milorganite.com/using-milorganite/safety/non-leaching-phosphorus

@MilorganiteFertilizer

Hi, Anthony - Milorganite’s slow-release formula provides nitrogen and other nutrients for up to 8-10 weeks after application. This provides even growth and better root development over a longer period of time, instead of a sudden growth spurt and excessive grass clippings like with synthetic fertilizer. Also, you don’t have to worry about streaks, stripes, or accidentally burning your lawn when you use Milorganite! It contains virtually no salts, so it won’t burn your lawn, even in the hottest temperatures or driest conditions. You don’t have to water it in, it will stay in the soil ready to work when moisture becomes available.
