How To Apply Skip Trowel Texture to Ceiling

In this video, I show how I created a skip trowel texture to a ceiling. I use a topping mix joint compound for the texture and apply it with a 14 inch drywall knife. The original ceiling texture was a NON ASBESTOS acoustic spray which was removed.
**WARNING**PERSONS SHOULD NEVER remove an old acoustic coating before verifying that it does NOT contain asbestos. Seek professional advice if you suspect asbestos is present.
With a smooth ceiling, the texture can be directly applied.

Can skip trowel be applied over a "swirl" plaster ceiling?

I would take steps to smooth the ceiling before a skip trowel. Possibly some sanding and/or a thinned mud mix could be used to fill the pockets first.

Float 2 coats of mud first then 3rd will be texture coat

to create an effective skip, add water to your topping mud. you should be creating grapes with a point, the point will follow the direction you're pulling.

Michael Struss I think a 12 inch knife would be suitable for a smaller project. I would say the technique used here should still be effective. Hope your project goes well!

Jorge V I would say my end result was as I intended so I don’t think it would be fair to say it’s “what not to do”. There are different ways to apply mud to achieve a variety of looks depending on your preference. While I’m not a drywaller by trade, I have worked with enough mud over the years to encourage those who want to give it a go. I do appreciate the plug to watch my video, thank you.

Pointing out mistakes but not the solution? I can't really take you seriously, can I... Either way, he uses a similar technique than I do, and as long as it performed the desired results that equates to what you see in homes, what is the issue? It does not impact quality, stability or longevity. . Quite frankly, I don't care if he is a handyman or DIYer. I'm not a pro, or handyman, yet all my work tends to be far superior than what a professional would have done. Not just my opinion, but everyone including professionals who see my work. So, pro does not always equal quality or correct, and non pro does not always equal incorrect.

Went to check your tutorial, but saw your channel is empty... that finish he did looks just like the ceiling in our house done by professional drywallers. He taught me how I can get similar results, and for that, I’m thankful.

Christopher Hetzel I had no desire to add sand to this mix. The end result was what I was shooting for so if this is the look you’re going for, I’d say give it a go. I appreciate the opportunity to respond

You didn't even add water to your topping. Plus all your tools haven't been cleaned properly since last use. Maybe spend more time in the trade before you waste everyone's time.
