Tutorial on how to assemble the mechanical components of a DIY split-flap display module.
The rough steps are:
- separate laser-cut parts (0:12)
- remove protective film (0:34)
- Spool:
- put together spool struts (1:31)
- attach bolt+nut to spool retaining piece (2:16)
- insert spool struts into spool disk (2:50)
- press other spool disk onto spool struts (3:25)
- check magnet polarity and insert magnet into spool (3:40)
- pass motor through side hole and secure with 2 bolts (5:05)
- mount hall effect sensor module and secure with a bolt (6:02)
- press spool onto motor shaft (7:15)
- press fit bottom piece into left piece, with laser-engraved lettering facing up and circular hole toward the back (7:50)
- press fit top piece into left piece, with circular hole toward the back (8:14)
- press right piece into top/bottom pieces and aligned with spool axle (8:34)
- press front piece into top/bottom pieces, with thicker side on the left (9:05)
- secure enclosure pieces using captive nuts+bolts (9:27)
- attach flap backstop bolt/nut (10:26)
- to connect to another module, remove front face, insert inter-module connectors, and replace front face (10:55)

Is it already intended to stack them on top of each other for multiline displays?

There's currently no mechanism for attaching them vertically, and I would recommend having some other structure to mount them to for stability. If you use a horizontal platform/shelf, there are holes in the top and bottom pieces of the enclosure that can be used to attach them. Otherwise, you could try creating a combined face plate for all of the modules instead of using the individual front faces; since the face screws into the rest of the mechanical enclosure, it should be strong enough to hold it up

Is there another way to easily test the magnets for the correct polarity against the hall effect sensor, so without the test pcb board?

Not totally sure I'm understanding your question - the sensor and main PCB are the same ones that will be used in the final assembly (but the controller will just be running firmware in a different mode that only indicates when the sensors are activated), so there's no special "test pcb" hardware or anything used only for testing the magnet orientation.

@@scottbez1 Ahh, I figured out why I was confused. I am currently building an 8 module system, but with the newer Chainlink electronics instead of the classic controller. Is it possible to run the special mode you mentioned in this system too?

@@TheRedstoneChallenge Ah, yep, you can toggle sensor test mode on a Chainlink build by sending "%" in the serial terminal.
