The primary reason that most players fail to consistently take the ball on the rise is NOT timing.
In today's session, we explain why this is so difficult for most recreational players and how you can become more aggressive and hit harder!

That surely applies to striking high balls close to the net. We tend to swing down to finish the point, and it usually ends up in the middle of the net.

Rec players almost always hit the ball while it is descending. The reason for this is that the ball is slower when it is descending and _much more easier to time_ It is true. In contrast, a rising ball is traveling much faster and far more difficult to time.

One very important technical aspect not mentioned is that you have to have a very quick footwork and bend the knees a lot to do that. And that's OK... After some balls you get used to it

Hi Steve. My humble opinion, with a basic knowledge of physics, what changes is the angle of the racquet face on contact . On a ball going up, hitting the ball on the rise, the racquet face is slightly closed on contact, otherwise ball is going to go up. Incoming angle of ball is the same as outgoing if racquet face is flush at contact, hence, a slightly closed racquet face is needed. On a ball coming down, then, the opposite, racquet face slightly open, so ball can go up. On a ball at its apex, when ball has reached its maximum height, before it starts to come downwards, then racquet face can be flush at contact. Great content Steve, VAMOS

Don't think so. On a ball coming down, at the typical waist level, I think of *closing* the racquet slightly to generate topspin. That is the conventional advice coaches give to rec players; close the racquet face a few degrees to impart topspin. And rec players are always hitting balls on the way down.

On a ball coming down, if racquet face is closed, then ball will go down, not over the net. Topspin is not generated with a closed racquet face, you need to lift the ball up, hence racquet flush at contact to lift ball up.@@Better_Call_Raul
