Hedgehogs are in decline in Britain and are now listed as Vulnerable to extinction. Numbers of hedgehogs have fallen by up to 30% in urban areas and 50% in rural areas since the Millennium.
According to the latest report, urban Hedgehog numbers are stabilising & in some areas increasing.
This is mostly due to our efforts in the garden.
Here is some things you can do to attract Hedgehogs & how to care for them.

Thanks, this was very useful. I picked up an Autumn hoglet in early Dec 23. She was around 350gr and out in daylight. I warmed her up slowly, gave her food and water and started to understand where to go from there. We’re now a couple of months on in early Feb and she’s thriving, she’s getting close to 750gr and we’re beginning to think about releasing her. She’s an absolute joy - obviously she’s a wild animal and we’ve tried to keep it that way but she roams about the house happily. I let her out on the lawn to re-acclimatise her and hopefully she’ll do well once released and go on to produce many more hogs. Thanks again for your advice, it’s very helpful.

I’ve seen a tweet from a lady who rescues hedgehogs and as a former nurse, she nurses injured, baby or starving hedgehogs back to health, though sadly sometimes they die. She recommends dried only cat or dog food with meat as the top ingredient on the pack. They can’t digest a cereal dominant dried food. It can give them diarrhoea. Wet food attracts the flies which then lay maggots that get into the eyes and ears etc of hedgehogs and she spends hours picking them all out, or the hedgehog would die.

What a beautiful, informative video Trev. I love the amount of effort you've put into helping to protect our lovely hedgehogs. In the summer I regularly see a hedgehog in the early hours, foraging on someone's front lawn. He put a sign up saying "Pick up after your dog!" But I literally know everyone in the village. Nobody would let their dog poop 💩 on his front lawn without picking it up. I bet it's Hedgehog poop! 🤣

Very informative , I have hogs in my garden ,and have feeding stations, being on the edge of a town there is a disused railway at the bottom of the garden which is good and a corn field on the other side. The one problem I found with the feeding stations like yours was rats ,and they dash in while the hogs are feeding grab a mouthfull run off ,return a minute later for more ( capture on camera ) .I tried all the rat repellent remedies ( lavender oil, human hair , garlic onion , urine etc all useless . Finally solved the problem by installing hinged 2way flaps which the hogs soon mastered , and the rats just stand outside, smelling the food but wont enter (2years now so fingers crossed ) .I feed with calci worms ,purina kitten food / hedge hog granules , and peanut kibbles , comment please .

Yes if you do put out Mealworms, the first Hedgehog will get hiccups as it quickly devours them. I put them out for Birds that feed off the ground, but noticed Hedgehogs and Cats love them.

Absolutely love hedgehogs, got 4 hog houses in the garden, feeding stations & have created garden borders & planted shrubs that will give them dense ground cover, they first started visiting back in 2017 & for the first time last year hoglets were born in one of the hog houses. That purina one kitten food is what I feed them, lots of shallow water dishes around the garden too & I wouldn't bother with wet food as chewing the dry kitten biscuits also cleans their teeth. I have 8 ring cameras out in the garden & in each feeding station, great quality video & audio & the motion alerts are great for knowing when hedgehogs are active in the garden, they're also invaluable for helping sick or injured hedgehogs & knowing the contact details of your nearest rescue centre is a must, I've rescued quite a few over the years & your right don't try & treat a hedgehog, unless you're trained & know exactly what you're doing, leave it to tut experts as these animals have such complex needs! At the moment I'm being a entertained by two cute wood mouse that l live in the garden, one house has a hibernating hedgehog. Regarding the fight at the end, that is the one time, if I saw it happening live on the camera feed that I would go out & intervene, pushing & shoving is fine but when one has the other gripped in its teeth like that & its shaking it like a rag doll, that can lead to some serious injuries & there's been posts from rescues on a hedgehog facebook group I'm a membe of about hogs brought in with fighting injuries. Oh & anyone who loves these animals needs to join the Hedgehogs! group on Facebook, an amazing group, learnt loads since I joined & there's lots of rescues that are on that group as well.

Brilliant video and info Trev. We have fairly recently become aware of a Hedgehog in our back garden in Norfolk which is quite small and in the middle of a housing estate. We have put a plastic shop style crate with a cut out hole in it to feed it and it takes it every night. I had been giving mealworms and a hedgehog specific food from Amazon, Over the past few nights I noticed the mealworms were going first, now I know why lol. I will stop the mealworms now. It seems bizarre we even have one let alone having 2 or more so we don't expect Hoglets or another but we live in hope. How would I know? He/She normally comes out at the same times but noticed it has got earlier with the nights drawing in..... I give about a half of a ceramic/glass dish ,the type that have posh Cheesecakes in of food and hope thats enough .,,,,It isn't always all gone but 99% of the time it is...... My Dogs are obviously aware of it as they sniff the box and area every night when we let them out for their last pee of the night....all fascinating stuff....Ramakin, thats the word I was groping for!

Hello and thank you for your very informative, clear and interesting video. I have learned a lot from it which I plan to use later on. I do have a question please. I have a hedgehog house (identical to the one you have in your video) and I know it has a resident in it already. I have set up a feeding station very close to it but is this correct or should I set it up perhaps somewhere where perhaps other hedgehogs will feel welcome to feed too? You mention that they are not territorial except about food. And I do not want to cause or encourage any stress or fights. Thank you.

Thanks Jo. Calci worms are better for Hedgehogs as the calcium to phosphorus ratio is better. I would feed in moderation as the jury is still out with these.

I've recently moved house & am delighted to discover I have a visiting hedgehog, we first saw a little fella out during the day mid Summer, he was a lively little thing so not Ill, I think his food supply had diminished due to the hot dry weather. Ive been putting out dry cat food under a plastic box with a hole cut out. Is it too late to put out a house for the hedgehog for hibernation?

I’ve got a walled Victorian garden and I’ve seen a hedgehog . However most of my garden is paved with a lot of pots and border shrubs. I’ve been leaving cat food and I’ve bought a hedgehog house. I don’t know what else to do. I don’t have anyway of knocking a running hole as it would destabilise my wall which is 150 years old. Hubby won’t let me do that as the wall is rickety. I don’t know how wide to help it. I’ve only seen it once. But it’s there. I think that it climbed up the shrubbery from next door. Should I’ve put bedding in the box when it comes? If I’ve can catch it, should I’ve release it in a park?
@TrevsTreks964
@TrevsTreks964 Жыл бұрын
Hi. Hedgehogs are good climbers but it more than likely found a gap somewhere. Do you have gated access to the garden? They can squeeze through small spaces. You can put some straw in the box but they will make there own nest. I would leave it there if it’s got food & water. Good luck & thanks for watching👍

Hi Barbara. It very much depends on the temperature & where you are in the country. We had a short spell of very cold weather in the south west. Mine have hibernated now since then. They can wake in spells of mild weather. Yes absolutely keep feeding👍
