First of all, exhaling through your nose only helps if: - you have an adequate anatomy for it (your nasal passages are not short and don't widen instantly as a connection to the cavity itself) - you have ABSOLUTELY no issues with either your septum, any of your turbinates, mucous membranes, neither you have adenoids in your nose or sinuses - your nasal passages are BALANCED, meaning that the same amount of air per second can be inhaled and exhaled through them. If you don't meet the first condition, even when you are blowing out a bubble, when the bubbles leaves, it'll grant some space for the water to slip in... Next thing you will feel is water in your throat...... If you don't meet the second condition, that will result in not meeting the third condition either, which means with an unbalance between the two nasal passages, there will be an air pressure that will be enough for one of them to blow bubbles out, but not enough for the other not even to keep water outside. Water will slip in, you'll find it in your throat immediately. This video doesn't mention that there's a possibility to keep water out of the nose without a noseclip, and without blowing bubbles out and wasting air with it. Keep a bubble at the entrance of your nasal passages and keep the pressure, but do not realaease the bubble, and the water won't be able to get into your nasal passages. Every person is different, some have to (and can) cover their nose with their lips, some can shrink their nasal passages to the level that helps with controlling the breath and bubbles easier. There are ways to help yourself. This is the most effective way to protect the nose (and most professional as well), as even the noseclips can be leaky (and they look dumb anyway)... But unfortunately, it is not possible to learn this technique for those who have any unbalance between their nasal passages OR don't have an advantageous nose anatomy that helps. I do not meet none of the above mentioned conditions for example. I am going to septum and adenoid surgery, though still experimenting. I have been practicing this technique (and of course, reading LOADS about it and the nose anatomy) for weeks now, I managed to do it a few times, but what was funny is that while my right nasal passage wasn't releasing bubbles, just kept the water out, my left nasal passage was still sprinkling bubbles out ROFL. I also have to scrunch my face and pretend like I wanna kiss someone, as for me covering my nose with my lips is impossible, and I have a very fucked up, disadvantegous nose anatomy (short, immeadiately widening nasal passages) and also other issues with my septum, plus adenoids in both my sinuses and nose... Most of the people who can do this learnt it while they were babies or kids, but I wouldn't say anyone can take credit for this crap that they are able to do it, as with a good nose anatomy and no issues, everyone could master it in a day or two....

This is not strictly correct: people's nose anatomy differ, and I (for example) always get water up my nose if I somersault or try to breathe to one side, no matter how hard I exhale through my nose. I have several freediving friends who are the same. I'm afraid for us the only solution is a nose-clip, or a mask when diving.

Another Freediver I agree with you. My mother has tried to teach me for years how to swim without plugging my nose without results. I have watched when she goes underwater, she doesn't exhale like the person in this video and I see a small bubble on both nostrils. My husband can go underwater without issues and so can my 6 year old. My 12 year old and 9 year old has issues. My 4 year old is still scared of going underwater so I am not sure about her yet

There's also another way, though this one takes practice. Getting water into the nose actually isn't what stings. It's when it goe seven further. But, with practice, you can learn to control some of the muscles in your throat, closing off this opening. This way, you can be on you back, or swim down, without having to blow air out your nose all the time.
