There are many reasons that BAs end up producing incomplete business requirements, and this can have an extremely negative impact on our job performance.
Today we’re taking a question from one Bridging the Gap community member, who gave us this scenario:
"In my company, there are no business requirements meetings. Business requirements are discussed among other meetings that include brainstorming, future feature planning and the design reviews. The time frame is generally 1 hour and I don't feel I have the opportunity to ask the requirement questions I need and want to ask due to time constraints and the many agenda items in that meeting.
Again I'm told requirements are not being captured completely. What is a recommendation you can give to improve my performance?"

Tried to find on your channel, but couldn't find - "What is the difference between Business Requirement and a Functional Requirement?" Ideally with an example showing how you go from BR to FR. Google results and other YT videos are just confusing. I liked your video on Use Cases and Functional Requirements. It would be invaluable to get a simple explanation how do you go from a A to Z explaining how a requirement evolves indicating how it looks as a Business Requirements, Functional Requirement, Functional Specification, Functional Design, Use Case, User Story, etc. I am a Project Manager 10+ years, and this is still confusing to me honestly:)

This isn't exactly what you are asking for - but this video outlines how to move through a project as a business analyst step by step. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ma56nrOVp9uqZHk.html Personally, I invest more energy in clarifying business objectives and business process flows than I do business requirements, although for some those terms are used interchangeably. In general, though, business requirements is a fairly fuzzy concept that's used a lot of different ways.

Hi Laura, thank you for your valuable suggestions in tackling requirements creep. The scenario mentioned here sounds like a typical example of Scrum team struggling to assign BA role to major Scrum events.

You are welcome. Yes, there are definitely some pervasive issues in agile/SCRUM where the BA role doesn't get proper attention. It can be a struggle as a newer BA to know exactly what to do and how to add value, but it's also a great opportunity to step up into more of a leadership role.
