There are many ways to ballast EZ-TRACK. The following is an example of what worked best for my Son and I "History of BNSF" 4x7 layout thats already in place. Tip: I Modified a ballast spreader from "Proses" to do what was needed. I've done this enough now where it takes me only 30 minutes or less to ballast large and long sections of EZ-Track with added realism. This process I've perfected looks like real ballast rather than the look of sand dumping along the track. Thats always frustrated me about EZ track but now have overcome that issue and I've included some examples at the end as proof. Again its a process that may not work for everyone but it has worked for me and wanted to share. Enjoy!

Your mod for the ballast spreader is what I've been looking for as I saw my ballast goes all way past the confines of the cork roadbed and I don't want that , I want it to have a neater look & your solution is elegantly simple. thank you. EDIT; I model in 2 rail O scale rapid transit- subway and commuter.

I think this is the best way to ballast EZ track it looks professional just as you use cork roadbed. depending on the moisture of your layout the cork can warp,with EZ track if you hot glue the sides at the bottom you don't have to worry about the tracks shifting. been doing a lot of research this is the best way for EZ track GREAT JOB!

Thanks... I was feeling exactly like you... and it took some thinking and short practice tracks...There are many ways... but this worked for me... throwing ballast on tracks just didnt set well with the look I wanted. And I WORK for the Railroad... so I have a pretty good Idea. Just wanted to share. TIP: Make sure your track is secured in place... for me it was as simple as liquid nails or a few Drops of Guerilla glue... not the foamy kind... just simple glue or whatever works best for you on certain areas of the track. Only I do not always glue down switches to heavily... I pretty much just sprinkle lightly...on any switches... Again Thanks so much for watching... just remember this is only a suggestion... take this Idea and fit to "your" needs. 👍🙂

Thanks, good technique! Is there a way to use tape instead of glue?
@eXtremeFX2010
@eXtremeFX2010 5 жыл бұрын
Hi thank you! I know some do not like this method but it works. I just dont have the time to coark bed then lay and level track(eventhough this method will also work if happen to laydown coark instead of ez-track 😉). And it just looks good when it seals: Example : flic.kr/p/2gvm7Qm In regards to using tape. I tried tape as an experiment and by the end of the week the tape warped badly for me. Again this may not be agreeable to everyone, but for me and 8yr old. It was quicker, neater and easier for us. The pictures on our Flickr site is very convincing. flic.kr/p/2gMtRa7 This method with the ballast spreader will also work even if you dont use ez-track. Just takes an artist eye, and patience. Advise doing some practice tracks first. Enjoy!

Very nice. What do you use to cover your table? It looks good. Green felt?
@eXtremeFX2010
@eXtremeFX2010 4 жыл бұрын
The table was originally covered with the traditional green matt roll that can be purchased at your local hobby shop. HOWEVER, in hindsight i would have just rather have dabbed some dark green under coat "in spots" to hide the pink 1" thick foam insulation core on top of the table. I say this because the green matt ripples something fierce and you have to go back and spray it with an alcohol mist to make the warps go away after your new ballast is laid. Im used to it now and know how to get rid of the matt ripples that occur because of the glue spray. But would recommend that you use static grass appliction along the track bed side of your newly layed ballast. To clarify, absolutely nothing wrong with having the green matt if you already have it. its just a hassle waiting for the ripples to straighten out. Spraying with an Alcohol mist spray bottle will make the ripples go away... but I recommend avoiding the matt if you can... its really up to which battle you want to take on. Thank You Kindly for watching and best of luck!👍 Note: I did a few practices on some track with is method just to familiarize myself with how the ballast will flow.

It is to late now but the main reason I wouldn’t use the bed is that in a couple of years the foam/ plastic starts to corrode away renering the track useless

do you use fine or medium ballast?
@eXtremeFX2010
@eXtremeFX2010 5 жыл бұрын
Hi there, glad you like it. I used Fine Ballast with this process. Now I might advise, I practiced first on a 11×17 green matt with 1 straight and 1 curved connected. After that One Time practice with my modified Proses ballast spreader... It got pretty simple. Note: If you must use medium, I use the fine ballast FIRST as a base and last "lightly sprinkling JUST A PINCH of Medium " up and down. I did this on my Turntable track areas only. Again only if you must. Check it out here on Twitter twitter.com/RegGFX/status/1079911624096600064?s=19 But for beginners I strongly recommend "Fine Ballast" First for best results. Is glue a must for ballast?
@eXtremeFX2010
@eXtremeFX2010 4 жыл бұрын
Well Yes, you will need some kind of glue mist the first time you apply, whether its on cork road bed or ez track base. Now over time you may see a crack or two appear. If that happens simply just take a pinch and fill with your fingers, then spray with an alcohol mist. It will settle. If you wish at this point to leave the glue step out, but I DO NOT Recommend it. A simple quick mist of scenic Cement will take care of any weak spots in the initial ballasting.

After i lay the ballast can i still disconnect the track,and is this same for the power track
@eXtremeFX2010
@eXtremeFX2010 4 жыл бұрын
Hi... thanks for watching... well. I too pondered this when I first trying to find a way... And I have to say "NO" would not recommend...HOWEVER... let me explain first...There is Good News and Bad News. 1) Bad News: This tutorial recommendation as ONLY for those areas of your layout already in place or has been secured to your layout whether its EZ-TRACK or Coark laid... this Tutorial will work for both eventhough I intended this for EZ-TRACK. When secured with liquid nails(non-eatingfoam adhesive glue) or whatever works best for the that individuals needs for securing to a base. So long story short. The BAD news again not for removable track. That being said however, there is Some Good News. 2) Emphasis on "SOME". If you want to do sections separately "COAT" sections in ballast you can... but BE WARNED... they need to be allowed to DRY SEPARATELY. I know because I did try but ABANDONED this approach because on EZ-TRACK or even Coark separated sections (mostly EZ-TRACK) WILL PEEL OR SHED AND FLAKE OFF when you try to assemble the track... SOOO... I abandoned that Idea rather quickly... but if you want a ballast in sections and disconnect... knock yourself out... but I did try that experiment and it was only 50% successful... meaning if you Nick or bump the EZ-TRACK that you have coated separately... you will have kind of a chippy ballast mess on some sections... So as mentioned Tutorial is "only recommended for secured level in place track. Coating sections works for simple small ovals...but WILL flake off the EZ-TRACK that is disconnected and reassembled. This would be the same answer even with sectioned coark(Yep, I tried that too). Sorry, wish I had better news and please forgive the long winded reply... Just wanted you to know what you would be up against. Because I have tried what you are asking. Disconnecting and reassembling yielded so-so results." I Just wouldn't recommend". This is only for secured in place areas of your track that you know will not change. If at anytime one does want changes, then you simply chip off the ballast pull out old sections/reballast. And That is for another Tutorial in the future. I'll go there if I have massive layout changes but I don't see that happening. Thanks for asking and take care... happy railroading 😉 Check out my entire Railway here: www.flickr.com/photos/171305933@N02/

@@thestormisempty6270 Very Glad to be of help and advisement... My first layout started around 8x4 size in 1978: flic.kr/p/2gxNv89 I never ballasted that layout. It stayed put together until 1988 then I went to Technical College got boxed away for a while perfectly sealed. It was not until 2018 that I had a house big enough to start again with new designs similar size today: flic.kr/p/2guzzHA Hang in there and never give up. Who knows maybe you will share a video some day on the best portable model Railroading layout that can be broken down and put back together in as little as 30 mins.🙂👍

@eXtremeFX2010 2 жыл бұрын
On the Turnouts...and like ANY Turnouts be very careful. I ballasted just the ends as you say... and almost nothing near any moving mechanisms of the switch. If anything just a pinch of ballast not glued. TIP: You really do not need a lot ballast near the moving parts of the switch: Example on my layout here: flic.kr/p/2hE7qQW Again... Ballast the Ends, Ballast around mechanisms(No Glue Needed near mechanisms) Hope the visual from my Flickr account helps. Suggest doing a practice switch first to get the feel of ballasting switches. Yah... thats pretty much true with any ballasting of track. Not just Ez-Track. The key to your concern is to 1) Make sure ballasting in any process doesn't look like powdered oatmeal packets sprinkled on. So far with this process and done carefully I have Not had any issues. Gives me more time running trains and NO powder look ballast. Locomotives run GREAT😁 kzfaq.info/get/bejne/j62afMeH18_IZaM.html

Yes... that works as well. We already had our track perfectly laid in place for about 2 years and 99% Derailment free... so my son and I thought... Oh What the Heck...ballast it😄.... I am planning a Modular extension and it is there we plan to use peco switches. What we learned to minimize Derailment during ballasting... we'll do the same. Same or similar principles apply ballasting any track. Just an idea we shared. Could be universal.
