I'm not recording audio with the screen capture software, I'm recording it internally (in FL) and syncing it up in the video editor.

Glad I was browsing the Image-Line forums, seriously great tutorials on FM synthesis! Definitely changed my mind on Sytrus as well lol After watching a few videos, I had to buy it. It's funny I wrote this plug-in off for so long, and I really wish I hadn't all these years using FL

I have an edison instance loaded into the master channel recording everything into a wav file. You can see it in the very beginning of the video.

I actually figured it out not long after that. The litte box thing that opens up at the bottom of Ableton when you open a new vst has a little arrow. When you click the arrow, there is a configure button. the configure button then allows you to automate different knobs with sliders.

check out NI Razor, it has a neat feature that can automatically add a tight subbass layer to your programmed synth ;)

I know that already, thank bro! I've been reading a lot about many stuff already, from mixing to pro mastering, but fl stills sounds worse than logic for example in the final mix, logic is way cleaner!

The reason sytrus is sounding better is because fm8 is using more smoothed sound waves. Sytrus makes a better triangular sound. Watch @ 13 minutes when you replayed it. That's why sytrus is more sharp. I believe it's easier to use also.

you dont "have to" do anything when you are making music. there are some guidelines you should hold on to but basically you can do whatever you like soundwise. usually you split your bass into layers. that gives you the freedom you modulate the mid and high range without touching the solid subbass. however you can modulate is if you like but only a few techniques really work because you can easily overdo it and destroy your clean subbass that shakes the club floors

chains of effects and i also think he may have extensively used the input routing in fm8 to have his own voice influence the motion of the bass after it was vocoded. either that or just a lot of automating, and different waveforms

On the master tab in fm8 turn the digital slider up and it'll fix the "smoothing".

Crossover > install FL Studio > Enjoy.....i do all my productions, arrangement, and mastering through FL Studio and Ableton (because i cant seem to get Kontakt player to work through Crossover). and for all the people who say its "unstable" on a mac...i use it everyday, flawlessly, no problems. people are idiots...

hi, im new to producing and i was wondering with these patches, do you have to layer them with a sub bass? and if so, do you have to modulate the sub bass aswell?

I know im late to the party here but what param are the X/Y knobs linked to? ive watched so many of your tutorials just as jumping off point because im using a different daw entirely and your knowledge of FM is amazing. Im able to follow everything up to a point (ie chaining operators, adjusting ratios, and fine tuning harmonics). But every time you use the X/Y mod it always leaves my patch sounding way different. I use reason and able to turn almost anything into an FM synth but maybe im missing something here. Is sytrus just able to do things that i cant in reason? EDIT i know i posted this on another video already but this video in particular is the one that originally gave me problems. I see that are editing MOD X at around 3 min. But im not sure i under stand what MOD X. Is there some kind of secret sauce under the hood of sytrus or is MOD X some kind of term that im not aware of?

you could try going into options, audio options, and change the buffer length to a longer time. I dont know for sure but i think fl might me slightly more cpu intensive and might fuck your sound if your computer can't handle it.

You make me very sad that I use mac :P Wish i could use vocoder, sytrus, and harmour. It would be sick if you could pull off making a neuro bass with FM8 and plug ins that would work for mac. Those are like my favorite sounds, but I can't find anywhere how to learn even the basics of doing them, other than your tutorials

how do you do that then? since i noticed the record on fl studio isnt armed..what i get from your comment is you are recording the audio on a seperate channel ..giving you one long wav file that you then sync up with the video..correct?? how do you do that?

is that when rendered, or when playing in the Daw?, because while in playing the song within fl (in the playlist or patterns), it is only using linear rendering at 128kbps. Final songs should rendered in 512 point sync,at a minimum of 224kbps and as a WAV. file.

can i ask you how you do a screen capture? i have a soundcard that runs asio but somehow the sound coming from my DAW doesnt get captured when i use my screen capture software camtasia.. if i use asio4all same problem..is there another way because using windows drivers are ridiculously slow as far as latency goes...i see you're using windows pc...thats what i using too

Can anyone provide a good resource to learn the basics of FM synthesis? These videos are great but i sometimes get lost when he talks about modulating the high harmonics seperately, for instance.

Not into dubstep at all .; But , one thing FM8 can do is ..route an operator to a filter and use the ouput of the filter as a modulator . Can't do that in sytrus , once you route to the filter , it's either going to the out section /pan or effects section , no possibility to reoute back into the matrix . Both fm 8 and sytrus filters sound ..BAD My 2 cents .

Wel ..I use for simple stuff ..a saw into a filter ( lowpssed +env modulation ) putting this trough another operator gives you the typical sineshaper distortion effects ... Other then that , it is not so spectaculair in fm7/8 , because audio feedback loops to filter and back again into filter verry easy create dc ofset problems etc.. Reaktor/core is perfect for generating feedback stuff ..

why not just change all of the ratios in sytrus to 1, since sytrus has a way higher range of rations than FM8? FM8's top ratio is 64. You could use the layer as well so they trigger on the same note. I like simplicity, idk about you.

someone knows why fl studio sound quality is worse than live or logic? I've reading so many forums, trends, magazines and all that stuff and people say it's pretty much the same... but I still find it's worse!! I've been a long time fl user and I don't want to change to logic because I feel so comfortable in fl, please some help!

Hey guys - Ive followed this to a key - and come up with some sick stuff ( which can be listened to here - soundcloud com/machinechemist/facepalm-bass-sample-pack ) BUT - If you listen to the song - or just take my word for it, I have an annoying high pitch frequency coming through sytrus - low growl, and a high pitch ring - whyyyyy? :( No reverb - nothing on the mixer either.

---Captain's log--- Date: 16-04-2016 Part: 0015 Ohoyhoy Its fascinating how different Ableton and FL are. The note F1 in FL equals to F-1 (F minus 1) in Ableton. Gotta tweak that *hit up! Without having much experience with FM8, there was a bug. Thy bug has cast upon me a glitch which makes a funky sound, yay! The automation curve between FL and Ableton are so annoying. FL automation gives a smooth logarithmic curve, where as Ableton makes this crooked-back-ish curve. Stoopid. I know I can add more additional points to smooth it out manually, but Ableton automation is too time consuming as it is. Windows 10 + Ableton DAW + FL plugins = A beautiful mess I get this nervous breakdown when I cant mimic samless exactly. The first try it sounded like poop. The second try it sounded like heaven. I was also struggling with the FM Matrix for a bit, because I didnt understand that you needed to RIGHT-CLICK the letters so activate them. Nice to know if anyone cares Working with FM8 was different, but nice! Captain out!

Would you say as far as EDM creation goes FL Studio can do everything Ableton can or not? I've used fruity loops for a really long time, so I'm kind of just sticking with what's sightly familiar (though I used it to master indie rock tracks and whatnot, so this is still a lot of new territory for me), but I always have that "grass is greener on the other side" paranoia and I'm wondering what you or other people reading this's opinions are.

+Michael Bush Hello again, Michael Bush! Let me just demystify all off your worries, here goes: I've tried several DAW's (Digital Audio Workstations e.g. Ableton, Fruity Loops, Garbage Band, Cakewalk SONAR, Reason) Just stick with whatever you feel is the best for you. If you got experience with FL, stick with FL. Wanna try something new? Try something new. The two mayor DAWs I've been playing around with is Ableton and FL. The reason I've chosen Ableton is pretty much the aesthetics (how it looks). Thats it! Now, Ableton have some native plugins, which I have no idea will work in any other DAW. But so does FL. Everything sums up to what you feel the most comortable with. Nothing more magical about it. -Ableton got some really bad ways to create automations, FL got some really good ways to create automations -Ableton is limited to 8 Macros, no questions asked (which sucks big time), while FL (I think) has unlimited potential on this matter. Huge artists has made amazing music in both DAW's Skrillex - Ableton Deadmau5 - Ableton Avicii - FL Studio Kygo - Logic Pro ... Its all up to you! Anyway, I think I might use both in the future, because FL has done some amazing upgrades which looks sooo good. I have no idea when Ableton 10 (or Ableton X) will be out, maybe in 2017-18. Jeremy McWilliams I have FM8 and it's not magic. It's good enough but it's not magic. If you are making dance music there is number of synths that can get the job done. If you are looking for hacks look for something like Predator or Diva because they can fit in any music. Also try Vanguard. I don't think anyone will answer your question except Google.
