Lots of people have stepped up to tell me the difference between Sytrus and the pole tension vs other synths like FM8 and position information. I'll definitely bring it up in the next tutorial stem the tide of confused people trying to do this in FM8 only to discover triangle waves don't behave like they thought they would :p
@JonathanWeberese
@JonathanWeberese 10 жыл бұрын
You probably know why it does that now. But I'll say it anyway. The FM synthesis is using the slope, (or specifically the derivative), of the modulator, rather than the amplitude. A triangle wave has only two slopes: One positive and one negative (assuming infinite harmonics). So what you end up with is only two pitches. The higher the amplitude or frequency, the farther apart these two pitches are. So you can also have it make the high pitch or low pitch more affected by the change by adjusting the shape parameter. I love your videos, Seamless! But if you ever get the time, and you haven't done so already, go through the Khan Academy Math pathway, with things like Calculus and Differential Equations, and the Laplace Transform. There's also a physics course on waves, and I think there are some good videos around the web on the Fourier transform. I don't mean to sound patronizing or something. I just had to take all these classes for EE and a math minor, and it really REALLY added a whole new depth to writing electronic music.

Do you need one? No, not really. I have one, but I rarely use it for actual production purposes. It's mostly for live performances (for totally unrelated things). What you should get depends entirely on what you want to use it for :]
@Ahseyo
@Ahseyo 11 жыл бұрын
The triangle does that because if you look at the shape of it, it's not on par time with as the sine wave is. It's modulating the LFO, so of course, the triangle waveshape is basically just in and out closing, I think you should get the same effect from a pulse wave, but the triangle wave is a half of a pulse wave's time span. The sine wave is a round shaped frequency wave, thus allowing all the frequencies to sweep in in a much greater depth and greater time span.
@Knives1891
@Knives1891 11 жыл бұрын
You can do it to an extent; the PM section of Massive is essentially equivalent to FM, but it automatically use a sine wave as the modulator. Similarly, if you use the "bend +/-" for the intensity setting, that is also FM. Again, only uses sine waves as modulators. If you are enterprising, you can set up an LFO and map it to an oscillator's pitch. But you'll have to tune the LFO rate to one specific note and then resample the result.
@PwningIRL

Triangles work better because the modulation of the frequency is determined by the slope of the modulating oscillator. Triangle wave has two slopes: up (lets say its slope is +.35) and down (lets say this is -.35) so when you put them together it modulates the frequency based on the two constant slopes (+.35, -.35) and this repeats as it oscillates! Sine waves have variable slopes, there's no constant up and down, it's more circular, which makes the frequency "wobble" more.

I am amazed how the process works easily at its basic start of fm synthesis
@HombreJirafa
@HombreJirafa 11 жыл бұрын
The reason that the triangle wave makes the pitch jump and the sine wave sweeps through has to do with the slope of the curves. The derivative of a sine wave is a cosine wave so it still causes the frequency to still sweep from high to low, whereas the derivative of a triangle wave isn't continuous so the slope instantaneously jumps from high to low. Simple calculus! :)

Did I already reply to you? well, here's another if i did ;p The most universal way would be to find the pitch control for whatever you want to vibrato and create an automation clip for it which you then turn into an LFO. Most synths have built in methods for accomplishing vibrato.

I have a few things to add to Seamless's answer- you can use small, fast pitch bends (going up, down, up, down,) to create a vibrato effect. You can also use the vibrato in Harmor, because Harmor is awesome.

Your best bet to get a growl bass through massive is to use WOW filter and EQ manipulation. Twitch has a good tutorial on that on youtube and there are a few other sources available to you. It's universally applicable also so your DAW doesn't matter as long as you have the same node-based equalizer.

Hi, I know this is an old video. But I thought I'd answer your unknown as to why the frequency sounds as if it's going between two pitches very quickly when you oscillate a triangle vs a sine, which sounds smooth. You may know this already, but for anyone else watching this video: If you picture the phase of a wave as a rotation around a central axis, a sine wave would be a circle and a triangle would be a square. The sharp right angled edges of the square (where the triangle changes direction suddenly) sound like a bounce between two pitches. This picture might help you see it: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:ComplexSinInATimeAxe.gif

Hey seamless, Your tuts have helped me make a giant leap towards producing decent dubstep.....Iv spent months trying to turn wobbles from NI massive into something that sounds like your resampling clips....no need to say i never succeeded. But now that I know how to make this type of sound,.Any tips or maybe a tutorial on the way on how to apply this knowledge into a track? Iv had no luck making samples that fit together,despite sounding awesome on their own,

From my little knowledge, I think the triangle wave does that because it has sharp peaks, but well, it can be other thing, probably... That's my opinion. :)
@SeamlessR
@SeamlessR 8 жыл бұрын
+Wren206 Since then I've learned it happens because digital FM is accomplished not by actually modulating pitch, but by modulating phase, which causes a change in pitch. This crucial difference means that the actual shape of the waveform isn't the actual motion of pitch. The change in slope of the waveform is. So, a triangle wave has two straight lines that do not change in slope, and so we get two solid pitches that don't change in pitch :)
