It's a description of a change in amplitude applied to a waveform when that waveform comes to that amplitude. The graph is an in/out graph. The white line, when it's straight from the bottom corner to the top corner, is telling you no change happens at any amplitude. But if I put a bump up in the upper quadrant that doesn't change the lower quadrant, what that says is the waveform only gets moved when it reaches that amplitude, and the line describes by how much it gets changed. Either up or down depending on how far away from the original center angle your change is. A totally flat line from beginning to end stuck right up top is saying no matter what happens, no matter what level it is, it is now completely at 0db. If you put a saw wave through it and leave the lower quadrant the same, put a point dead center, and bring the top point down to the lower right quadrant, you'll create a triangle wave.

wow are we already at the "ps2 retro music" stage of things? ;D I did just find a stack of my old games. Wish I still had a working console. But yeah it would totally get all atonal but probably neat. As you might imagine, if you shift something up and then down by the same amount, it's just the original value. But then whatever gets put in between will be shifted.

@@SeamlessR haha seems like we are getting there. To be fair though, ps2s have gorgeous sounds, so I imagine the urge to replicate them may occur a little sooner haha. I’ve been wanting to emulate that system exclusively to hear the sounds. I am now realizing how much is possible with the frequency shifter. I imagine flangers would sound like a bizarre phaser when put through the same system. There’s quite a lot of untapped potential there wow.
