In many ways, great background vocals can be more difficult than the lead vocal. You have to learn to walk a fine line between creative expression and anonymity. While just like the lead vox, there are oodles of things to consider within each genre as far as what makes the full vocal array work for any given song, there are some very important KEY things to learn and practice so that the next time you dive into BGVs, you nail them! Let me show you in this lesson :)

Now this was a video with A BUNCH of new information to me. I love the way you not only analyze what other great singers are doing, but teach us how to do it. But this? Additional vocals that don't just sit a third above the melody and copy it verbatim? I never, ever thought about what exactly makes those background vocals great, and the things you pointed out here really seem so basic, so fundamental that implementing them well is, in combination with a solid singing technique, practically everything one would need musically to be a GREAT background vocalist. Chris, thank you so much for just sharing this information for free! (Also, actually teaching us so much for free is pretty much the best advertisement you could run for your course. "If he teaches us this much for free, what will I learn when I actually pay him?")

It's cool that I now have these tips, but your videos don't MAKE me use them. It just gives this freedom. Feels really nice I don't know what is it honestly. And now I appreciate fully fb page. Still great videos, you change my life! Keep it up! EDIT: When it comes to creating chords, do I have to know the theory? Because I'm so in Jack White, Dead Poet Society, Dave Grohl mindset where I just wanna feel it. So will I develop it just by doing music and just doing stuff?
@chrisliepe
@chrisliepe 4 жыл бұрын
So glad you're connecting with these videos! I've always looked as music theory as "just another tool". Our ears, our inspirations (Jack White etc...) and our voices and instruments are all tools, and music theory is not replacing or instead of any of those. It is in addition... I like to think of theory as a set of cool colored lenses in some sunglasses. Everything you look at through the lenses looks different, more exciting and unique. When you know theory, you can see and hear things that you wouldn't have otherwise ever discovered. It's a HUGE creativity tool for me IN LIGHT OF my inspirations: Cornell, Kennedy, Staley, Sotelo etc... :)

How cool. Having to redo all of the vocals for 10 songs because I rushed them all. One of the songs is in the vein of "Styx" and "Queen" for backups. I'll be able to experiment with the lead and backing parts soon with these things in mind, if all goes well.

This is something i'm struggling with which i think would be a great topic for a video, and i think probably most artists struggle with , is knowing how much to trust your own instinct when it comes to putting out ideas you have in your head, or at least trying to, and how you approach that vs constructive cirticism , ..which as many will know when you take music seriously you honestly have more constructive criticisim than you know what to do with , so i think a video about finding a balance between listening to others advice and when to just overrule and go with your gut could be really interesting and it would be awesome to hear how you approach that

Hey, how are you getting no plosives that close to the SM7b? I get plosives with a pop filter in front of it with the cover on when I'm that close

Most of it is learning to moderate the plosives with my actual singing. It takes practice, but making those less as they come out in delivery is key!
