Project Manager, producer, or person that gets things done in video games has to be one of the toughest jobs. How does one go about becoming a PM and what are the traits one needs to have? This episodes special guest is Sapna Sudhakaran, Head of Production at All Pixels.

I saw the ad on fb and IMMEDIATELY wanted to see it. I'm starting my career in the videogame industry, so this was really helpful because I'm trying to figure it out what piece am I playing and want to play in the future? And after watching the video, I can feel that is around this, but I want to keep learning and improve!

New Games Project Manager here, I do come from a Technical background so I am comfortable doing the individual tasks that are required to build and market a game. The most important job we have I think is to balance collaboration and constraints. We build the culture necessary for effective collaboration, implement processes that effectively gets tasks done and actively manage the project timeline and inform stakeholders of reality. I have a better experience collaborating with the teams because I personally understand their work process and the technical work that they do. For any Games project manager out there, having empathy for all stakeholders is paramount to success for the project.

I’m happy you like it and success with your new program. The good news is that more women are joining the games industry and are taking on leadership positions. Diversity is a great thing to have not just gender wise, but also race, ethnicity, and culture. It makes for great games.

He asked some really great questions but I feel like the guest could've given a bit more details, I mean she practically said some things about what PMs do in general, It would've been nice if she explained how its different in the video games industry.

Hi Raksha, thanks for your comment. The fundamental role of a PM won't differ in the games industry compared to others which is why I always say the PMing role is one of the best ways for someone to join in - the skills are transferrable. The only difference is the type of projects the PM will be handling in the games industry and that will dictate the basic technical skills that they'd need to brush up on.

Thanks for doing this. It's good insight. Sapna mentioned that exhibiting passion helps in getting hired. What does it take to get your foot in the door, though ? I've been one year in IT services as a PM ( was a BA & QA tester before). Worked on a 2d side scrolling mobile game from concept,storyboarding, design, level design to delivery. A much more enjoyable experience than service-level work. Would love to be a video game PM. but how and where can and should I start is my question :)

Your best bet right now would be to try to either get a part-time gig on an indie project or if possible to try and aim for an entry project with a developer / publisher. You've got to pitch yourself online as much as you can. The experience you have as an IT PM is helpful. Many of the PM's I've worked with in the past come from IT / telecom industries and just pushed to get into the business by networking, attending IGDA / game dev meetups, and trade shows. Hey does anyone know if you can be retail or store management from say 'Bed, Bath, and Beyond' or 'Home Depot' and transfer into game industry management? Or would you have to go ahead and start in the video game industry completely?
