"normal" prioritizing doesn't work for me and many ADHDers
@anyadarlingg
@anyadarlingg Жыл бұрын
With practice it helps. I usually have to genuinely think about what is higher priority tho, or else I will forget to get it done in time. And have stickies on my computer with the numbered tasks. Checking them off when they are done motivate me to keep pressing! 🙌

So true I was overwhelmed just listening to this approach. What works better for me is to start with a specific number (like 5) of random things. This seems to help overcome anxiety and inertia. Can be as simple as putting a cup in the dishwasher to get myself going.

My grandpa had a saying that really helps me, basically it's "once you start something, it's half finished". Realizing that for me and other procrastinators the biggest obstacle and energy sink is actually putting things off and not the task themselves, so once you've started it you've broken the seal

Youre right but for me it often doesnt work. Even if i managed to sit at my desk in front of the task and already read the instruction my brain refuses to go on focusing whenever i realize that i first have to somehow understand the whole topic. And understanding the whole topic means reading and memorizing a lot of boring and difficult stuff. My brain hates that and it often takes me hours until i understand enough to go on. Often happens with reading and research before actually starting a task. Any helpful solutions for me? Becouse it is a real pain every time and it takes me hours and a lot of energy which i waste on fighting against my brain

I have impression that ADHD caused procrastination is different that the one anxious people struggle with.I find anxiety provoking fear of starting a task, while adhd based is rather a long, 'painful' work and struggle to complete it. Anyone've realised it too, or it's just my impression or a singular case?

The one about a priority but not urgent is the one that keeps me from my goals. Labeling it that way immediately helps my mind because when everything is urgent, I can’t think and avoid the one that I want because I have so many other things that have to be done now…

I kinda play a game I did to myself that it's like "DO SOMETHING, ANYTHING! JUST DO IT!!!" 😂😂😂😂😂 Cause I have so much stuff to do that I kinda feel like I need to prepare myself to start doing it, but if I do this, I get stuck just thinking aboy I should do and I never do it, so I don't like thinking too much, I just need to DO SOMETHING FASTER THAN A SECOND, even grabbing a sock from the ground helps hahaha And then the magic happens. It kinda creates a chain reaction and when I'm aware of it, I'm cleaning my whole room now 😅 It works! And another thing is that: We need to have a routine!!! Keep our bodies moving! If we are too stagnant, it also creates a chain reaction that will lead you to be even more stagnant, on your phone watching videos non-stop. I really enjoy my vacations from work but at the same time I don't like it cause I know I'll get more lazy and stagnant than before.

@Dr. Marks! I have a burning question, if you please! What is it about body doubling that lets me *magically know HOW* to do a task? A task I should know how to do, but something's just muddled - can't figure out what steps to take & in what order. Providing better "Accountability" is a go-to explanation for how body doubling works, but that just doesn't scratch deep enough to make sense of the dynamics in the experience. It's been my most effective catalyst for action, long before I heard of the phenomenon, but it's as mysterious to me as fairy dust. If you see this, Thanks for your time. 🙌 We're rooting for you!

Hello Dr Marks, thank you for this video!! When you say 'pairing a rewarding task with an adversive task', do you mean do them at the same time (like have a cup of overpriced latte while coding or writing some difficult article) or do the task first, then reward myself? Cause sometimes, when I do the nice and nasty task at the same time, I kinda get distracted by the nice task and then I just give up on the nasty task. -facepalms-

Yeahhh making that list is about as far as I’m getting with prioritizing things. The execution is the issue. I think for me it’s once I start something I’m not satisfied until it’s finished and I know it’s going to consume me so I wait until I have no choice but to do it and let it consume me for way less time than it would have otherwise. I would LOVE to be able to do my projects little by little and be satisfied with having an end to my day, a stopping point, and just being able to put it down without it being complete.
