Tennis Tactics - How To Beat Pushers.
Tennis tactics and tennis strategy by Top Tennis Training, in this video Simon and Alex will teach you one of the many ways to defeat pushers.
What exactly is a "Pusher"?
A pusher in tennis is someone who is extremely consistent at making balls, they are normally quite fast around the court and can drive players crazy with their ability to make you hit shot after shot.
A pusher is normally quite a defensive player who "pushes" back any shot they can chase down, without deliberately hitting a winner. They can angle shots, aim deep, as well as produce effective lobs. Pushers are extremely quick and consistent, rarely making errors.
In tennis singles strategy, some of the common tactics that players use such as attacking a weaker side, or moving their opponents simply don't work against a tennis pusher or tennis grinder.
As Wimbledon 2017 is in full swing, we wanted to release a video that covers tennis singles strategy and tactics to help players defeat one of the most frustrating styles of opponent you will face - the pusher.
This is just one of countless videos we have inside our full Tennis Tactics Blueprint course which has helped hundreds of students around the world win more tennis matches against different styles of opponents in different conditions.

This video helped me win my first tournament!! It was a double elimination tournament and I first played this guy and got destroyed because I tried to play aggressive and he just hit everything back and eventually I made unforced errors. He beat me the first time 0-6 1-6 and then I made my way through the losers bracket and I had to play him in the finals. I researched the night before and used this strategy and it worked!!! I beat him and won the tournament! I had to slightly modify it a little bit to hit a nice lob over him when he decided to come up to net as a result of the drop shot and hit some impressive angles on the ball anyway. The other times I just hit a nice passing shot. Thanks for the help!! I owe you!

Nice video. I use this tactic myself sometimes no matter who I am playing. I play all of my tennis on clay courts and sometimes pushers or even non-pushers will take this shot, hit a drop shot and move to the net. You really have to always be alert and watching the ball to pick up how much they have opened the racket face.

If it only would be that easy and simply... if you are then really standing there against a pusher that can handle such low shots you are again no where. Besides you can do such stop balls and slice maybe few time time but dont then if you have a smart pusher he will knotice your strategy kinda really fast and adapt and will missus this again. So its not that simple.

Your tactic will work to anyone not only on pushers. Main rule to beat pushers is to play your game. Pushers like if you scare to risk (it is their game), they all try to win in mental fight. If you will play in you game, you will see a lot of opportunities what pushers give to you (because a lot of them don't hit well).

Great vid guys, i find myself more trying to hit corners with reasonable power and pushing into the net to end points faster. Typically dont want to get into a endurance match with these guys. Hadnt considered using the slice like this, it makes perfect sense. I wonder if anyone actually considers themselves a pusher?
@ThanhaoCong
@ThanhaoCong 6 жыл бұрын
I normally consider myself all court player. I like varying the shots, create angles and let opponents run or hit winner. However, if the opponent is physically stronger than me, or I'm getting tired, I naturally become a pusher. I'm pretty small so it takes quite some time to chase the ball and recover back to position. So I just push the ball back with simple idea that I have more time to get back to position. I both win and lose matches. But after all, my opponents get tired and that's what I like the most haha.

Can you do a strategy/tactics video on players who keep lobbing in doubles? I mean the good ones, who can consistently hit topspin lobs over your net player partner and near the baseline so you have to keep running side to side. (and espsecially when those lobs aren't high enough to hit a smash after the bounce, but high enough to get past the net partner.

Just had a league match against one of these. First set I beat them 6-0 then he just lobbed every ball with zero pace, I smash it back, he lobs it back...I ended up losing due to getting angry. His second serve would barley get over the net and bounce low. It was embarrassing to lose. Luckily I was moved up to the higher league so that play should be reduced.

The kind of shots that Simon does in this video are nasty, fairly high balls with topspin that bounces close to the base line.. especially on clay. Another type is someone standing close to the baseline, often hitting the ball hard, which makes the game so fast that I sometimes feel I don't have time to think or even prepare my shot...
@mjk506

Both of these but especially the high ones with a lot of top-spin, sometimes feels like I'm trying to hit the ball as it's nearly at my shoulder! At least with the fast shots you just go with instinct and can counter punch a bit easier, those high loopy ones are a nightmare!

Pushers enjoy pace, they can use your pace against you. If you hit the ball higher, it may make it harder for them, but higher level pushers will still get topspin shots back. By slicing, you make them create their own power

Thanks for the video guys, very instructive. What about pushers that go for a cross court drop shot when you bring them forward in this way? Many pushers I play hit a junk ball drop shot with some funky spin when I bring them to net that can be tough to hit since I'm forced to run forward toward the net myself and hit an awkward ball. Thanks again for the video. 🙏

my experience with pushers are they are usually more lobby then what you are hitting. Its that much harder to bring them to the net when you're dealing with deep shots that are kicking up above shoulder height.. especially on the backhand. It takes very good timing to hit these early on the rise so you are not just pushing shots back...something I have been working on. Thoughts?

@EmperorsNewWardrobe

Benjamin Hall, those are the worst. No pace, high and loopy to the backhand. The fact is, you need sufficient technique to deal with that high backhand, otherwise you end up in the backhand cage. Then, given that you won't get cheap mistakes from them, use all other strengths of yours to break their rhythm, whether volleys, drops shots, serve and volley etc. In other words, groove back the moonballs (half volley if the high flat is too liable), and then use your strengths when the opportunity arises. You must also have a grinding mindset!

A pusher is some one who is just like playing a back board they just keep getting the ball back over and over till u get flustered and fail....they just punch or push the ball back to u with nothing on it except what moment I put on it when I sent it across to their side...right tell me I'm right.I never really played a pusher,a moon baller and I never knew that's what they called it every shot bounce almost as high as a lob its sucked...only because it was annoying....the dude freaked when I opted to switch like a ninja and take it on the forehand side I was gonna start hitting his moon balls like overheads and make him regret them but I couldn't adjust in time its was over 6 3,6 4,I was learning but not in a match....a little yes,worst part was he took my deadly back hand out of the game,I guess in practice he noticed that it was not my weak side,my forehand is my strong side,but my backhand is my deadly side...mainly because I have two hands on the racquet i have more power and more control...and last minute change on it... The only person who hits harder back hand then me is Agassi my footbspeed was equally as fast but Andre had better tennis training I was close,but close is not enuf....Borg was my hero.Rod Laver and Arthur Ashe

The thing it its not that easy how its often demonstrated... i mean yes depending what pusher one has this works but then there are also these smart pushers that adapt quite fast and punish you with the stuff you try to beat them... means you can do sucg slices maybe few times but then they usually get your strategy because pushers maybe have weekness and arent the best tennis players and variable but they arent stupid so they will adapt in a way you cant even do anymore such slice or whatever. I had several times pushers where k played also short balls. But they knoticed my strategy very fast and started to punish me by giving pushing shots that wouldnt allow me anymore doing stop balls and slices. Its very important to understand the level of a pusher. To a amateut pusher one can do such strategy like in the video maybe all the time and win with it but against a pusher that isnt amateur... well you wont win with it. Because they can handle such balls to thats why they are in my eyes also called pushers not because they are way back and dont like to come to net... no for me they are because whatever ball you give them if hard ball easy ball slice, stop ball, topspin, lop whatever they always find a way to return that damn ball 😑

I don't understand why everybody allways wants pusher to lose and many even hates them and complains about their playing style. I am most proud of my wins where I played a player who hits much much harder than I can hit and I have had to solve how to not let him play with his strengths and the game turns to a real mental battle. Sometimes I have been asked do you enjoy playing pushing.. Well yes I do, I enjoy competition and challenges. I don't train pushing shots, if I can be an attacking player then I use more my huge topspins especially from forehand which is very much same looking as rafas forehand. I don't have a good playing buddies so I can't hit consistently huge topspin shots without making errors if my opponent hits harder than I am used to..Off course I could just go out there hitting hard every time and making more errors than my opponent who probably even hits better for my harder shots. But instead I want to beat my opponent and if you want to win a player who trains much more than you and has better technigue and harder more precise attacking shots. he is more skillfull than you but I allways believed there is a way to win if I just find my opponents weaknesses and understand my own limits and strengths. At my peak I had superior endurance and speed to most players as I was one of the best badminton players of my nation. but thats not enough to win those better players jus being quick. You need to understand positioning on the court and what kind of shots to use in each situation so your opponent doesn't get an easy winner next shot and you need to read your opponents shots well and be totally focus on every shot you make and be allways ready to suddenly run full speed to any shot your opponent tries. There are many different ways of defending and I change tactics by what kind of player I'm playing against and in what conditions..Basic pushing style is moonballing which is sometimes very effective style against some players especially on high bouncing clay courts hitting deep lobs time and time again so your opponent can't hit winners from far back unless he is very good at hitting to a high bounce with hard and deep flat shots which he hits earlier than most players. It works better against players who ads a little topspin to their shot, they will usually waitfor ball to fall on their hitting comfort zone. I use this tactic quite often in some situations. Once I made a much better hard hitting player to just play same pushing game with me and it became a real mental battle and I was mentally ready to hit hundreds of shots every damn point and I saw that my opponent was frustrated and didnt really know what to do against me so I had a clear mental advantage.Even if my shot landed short after those minutes of rallies, I knew I'm fine because he had got stuck in that pushing mode, so if he suddenly gets attacking chance after we have hit moonballs for hundreds of shots in a row he feels that he needs to attack but he was afraid to hit suddenly an attacking shot so I had really hacked into his mind. I eventually won that three setter that lasted well over 4 hrs 7-6 2-6 7-5. I was down 4-1 in third but I decided in that moment that I will do my all so that every point would last as long as possible, because we had played well over 3 hrs and opponent was close to winning so would feel pressure of ending the long lasting match, so I used his relief to my advantage kind of..Letting him so close to winning and then make him realize after every rally is over 100 shots that he is actually far from close to winning ;)It's hard to refocus if you think you have win in a bag but then realizing that the match will last long and you really have to hit winners if he wanted match to ever end haha. I don't use moonballing very much on softer low bouncing clay courts because its much easier to attack and especially against those who hit so hard flat shots deep, they are a nightmare for me as they slide in court and then bounce so fast and so low. Against those players I defend keeping ball low with slice defence. I can't let them hit from over the net or I lose very quickly. But I have changed lot of matches where I lost a first set 6-0 or 6-1 by that change of tactic. When opponent is forced to hit from low, he must take pace out of his shots and concentrate to hit precise shots running his opponent and I loved to run balls down, I loved long rallies, I never wanted my opponent to hit an error during rallies, but off course thats my strategy to make opponent hit errors, but during rallies I never hope or expect my opponent to do errors thats why I can be so patient. I just keep concentrating my own playing and try to accept everything that happens in court. I never hit a shot with an attitude that it will be a winner no matter how good it looks like, I keep myself allways ready for next shot so I don't get surprised and panic when opponent gets the ball back from seemingly impossible situation. then there is counterpunching. It's best made for hard courts and you need to hit very flat shots which I dont know how to hit them. shots should be deep and low preventing your opponent to hit winners and absorbing the pace of your opponent's shot usually. Shit I should write a damn book about competition mentality and how to win by pushing lol. Now I have wrote so long that I need to stop.

How to beat a pusher? Be in the mood to play tennis. Maybe take a day or two off from playing before your match with the pusher. By the time you play him, you'll be itching to play tennis and you'll be in the right frame of mind. While this does not guarantee a win, it'll give you the best chance to do so.

Talking about my speed I never realized how fast I was,the main reason I was so fast is before tennis became first in my list,my younger days I played baseball and I played third base in little league right at the time when aluminum bats were just starting to appear...if u know anything about that I was the closest person to the batter other than the pitcher...when aluminum bats came out a good hitter would rip a grounder at me so fast I was really considering quitting or moving to the outfield for safety...all I had was pi of the ping of the ball hitting the bat and it was right in ur glove so toughing it out I stayed at third,but had to triple my speed that I went after ground balls heading for outfield...another thing when u have a new tennis player,one great thing baseball gave me(other than 3 world series and the hall of fame,jk)was I could catch a ball better than I could hit it...so when a new tennis player is having trouble seeing the ball they should try just catching the ball.hears why in baseball we don't just catch line drive hits,we have to throw the ball somewhere as fast as we get it so it really helps that hand eye coordination,and put it on another level,when I play tennis my speed to the ball is so fast its too fast because my brain is thinking catch it and get rid of it so I have to slow my self just a little when I close in on a shot....the other thing too is waiting and letting the ball bounce in baseball u want to get it before it bounces then u don't have to throw it,it an out....I original got into tennis for killing tennis balls and stayed for the challenge of never giving in....I u too never give up against better players,I just kept coming back like the plague,Borg was my hero,Chris Evertt too....I used to get recognized for my exceptional tennis so they were always playing older and better more experience players after 40 or 50 deuce points in the first set and the second I sent a lot if older kids into the lockers or home and I think most if them quit the game....JK...but they probably did it really made them upset someone two years younger beat them after an hour and two sets.....not for nothing it was there own fault like Borgs opponents I would see them get back to deuce or ad up and then they would just let up 20 percent may be more and as my uncle used to say I would eat their lunch....he was in the college hall of fame and alway one of my favorite people,he could trash talk omg...thanks guys keep up the good work.....u should play around with different camera angles experiment with different views no split screens just show different angle your a little far away but not bad....piece....

Pushers succeed against players whose technique is not great. Like mine 😂 If you don't have good enough technique, grit your teeth, amd irritate them more than they irritate you by moonballing or some similar strategy. Drop, lob combo is also a decent idea. No need to be too accurate as many pushers can't really attack. That's why they're pushers.

The Last_Musketeer: No my friend, don´t say that again! If you say that, it means you don´t know about tennis. In professional tennis there aren´t pushers, that´s for club level. Respect for what Rafa has done. And, I´m the biggest Federer fan.

There are. Simon is undoubtly a pusher. Pusher isn't necessarily someone without proper techniques.

Sorry Roger, but this time you´re wrong, the term pusher doesn´t exist in pro-tennis. The term used for players like Simon, is counterpuncher.
@scampbell1566
@scampbell1566 6 жыл бұрын
Nadal is not a pusher, as he hits very hard with tons of topspin. However, he's very very consistent, and will run down anything, which are pusher traits. Similarly, Borg, Vilas, Agassi were not pushers. They were groundstrokers, as is Nadal.There are pushers in the pro ranks, relatively speaking, but not many. Goffin and Monfils come to mind. Monfils is a master at defusing pace and softballing until he finds an opening to hit a dropshot or something really weird and unexpected. I imagine most of the pro's don't relish playing him.

no help at all. In the demo, he's not pushing, thats like actually hitting the ball. Pushers lob the ball in the air and making you have no ability to hit the ball properly. They also constantly hit it in
