@karl kerr Thanks for the comment. One thing I recommend is playing the riffs slower, and maybe setting your BPM to a slower rate. This will help you nail down the details. I even do this with my own songs. Like I have a gig this weekend where I'm playing my metal music but having to play along with and sing to my own backing tracks (I'll be making a 'how to video on that soon!) Because I don't play my own music live that often, I'm having to re-learn some of my own riffs and the vocal cadence while paying those riffs. So yesterday, I slowed down the whole thing until I nailed it, then played it at normal speed. So try slowing things down and then gradually build back up!

Here is what I do for my focus practice 1. Review songs and learn new songs end to end: intro, chorus, licks, riffs, solos 2. Technique: scales, sequences, legato, phrasing 3. Ear training 4. Chords and chord progression 5. Improvisation

This is awesome! I can relate to a lot of this especially the workout part cuz I workout 5 days a week and eat healthy. Love the freestyle to random music tip. I need to start doing that one. I'll add another tip--Write completely original songs often even if they are really short songs and then record yourself playing them. It helps me focus more on accuracy, presentation, etc... cuz the camera is on me and I build a huge personal music library at the same time to share and reflect on.

That last part I can relate to. I started playing guitar in 98 and was influenced by Dick Dale. Then in highschool I got into 80's metal, Judas Priest, Quiet Riot etc. This was in the 2000's after Beavis and Butt-Head and 90's alternative did their best to discredit the hair bands. So when I played around people, I felt like if I was playing slayer or slipknot people would have listened to me.
@jasonstallworth
@jasonstallworth 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah man, that was a strange era as the hair bands and a lot of the metal was getting shunned while the grunge scene took over. It seems these days a lot of folks are listening to 80s (all of it...metal, rock, pop...) I even play mainly 80s at my live solo acoustic shows on the weekends

Insta-sub. I regret never focusing in guitar/bass practice. I still compose and have managed to publish two songs in my channel but i find it so hard to open the damn case (which is laying in the floor right beside my office chair) and it's prolly because I'm just too used to procrastinate in this matter. Still, I recently discovered a passion for creative building in the very game I was using to alienate myself by "just playing it". I barely "play it" anymore. I'm in the process of establishing a building schedule that allows me to publish a weekly video in hopes of being able to translate this schedules and organization patterns into other areas of my life. Practicing, composing, spending time with my partner, body care, mind care... everything. I find that 1st tip a very important lesson that opens the door for everything else. How do you find a good teacher? I had a couple good ones when I was a total beginner but now that I've been playing for 2 years need one geared towards intermediate level. I want to learn how to play advanced stuff like arpeggios/sweep picking and more advanced metal songs like Megadeth and Dream Theater. My last teacher was too focused on just technique and rehashed the same lesson over and over again. I have an ambitious goal to learn 100 new metal songs end to end to play covers as well as develop my chops to create my own music.

Finding a good teacher is tough. And yes, I agree if you focus too much on technique and text-book type stuff, it may hinder you from really learning how to play the style of music you want to play. Hey Jason, great video! I got a quick question for you. When you say to try improvising on riffs like you did with Master of Puppets, do you think it’s more beneficial to learn the actual riff properly before improvising? I noticed sometimes when I’m learning riffs, I sometimes get frustrated if it’s a particularly hard one and start improvising with a slightly more simple version I came up with and just jamming out haha. But I do go back and try to learn the riff properly. Do you think it’s better to put the discipline in to learn the riff properly first before putting your own spin on it?
@jasonstallworth
@jasonstallworth 4 жыл бұрын
To be honest, I rarely learn anyone else's music these days because I'm too busy writing my own. That was just one example of how you can start branching out. But to your question, I do think it's important to learn the riff first and then branch out. Because learning the riff will give you that confidence and you'll be able to do so much more

@j9soundlabs719
@j9soundlabs719 2 жыл бұрын
I feel like I can relate to this question.. Like Jason said, start slow.. don't bite off more then you need to in one session.. About the "soulless" part.. if you're talking about your musical ability, or playing style.. try bending your strings a little. Vibrato? It adds "feeling" to sound.. gives it life.. emotional content. A good example of this, off the top of my head would be "guns and roses" November rain... couple of solo sections in there that Slash is almost crying through his fretboard.. (emotional content) Once you get te hang of it, you can apply it in any song pretty much anywhere you want in the song. Tremolo.. it's a technic, and it's usually applied in a pinched harmonic.. for an extreme effect.. George Lynch from early Dokken.. is awsome at those "full of emotion" solos and backing riffs.. I think when Jason says "be yourself" he's not saying don't emulate other players.. he's saying learn from them, study their technic, and make it your own.. with YOUR music. Technics are "tools" for everyone to use.. no different then a guitar itself.. or an amp. We all learn from somewhere.. and Jason is a great source, humble and talented.. hope I helped.

seven tips for seven strings!
