The other thing about the Katana Mini for £99 is the two internal dip switches. You can thicken the tone up and up the gain. You don't have to but the amount of tones available with this, for the money, is ridiculous. Highly recommended.

In case it wasn't mentioned: I use boost to normalize the volume between humbucker and single coil guitars without having to touch the amp. So I dial in the tone with my Les Paul, then switch to my Tele and add the boost pedal to make the volume the same. This way, all the pedals that appear afterwards are pushed the same as well. (I use EP Booster or a low-compression setting on the Wampler EGO Comp)

To me the difference between boost pedals is quite subtle, especially if you're not in the room. Also as a user of the EP boost, it's a smashing pedal. I use it to add a little saturation and bass to my high gain, low bass, amps.

Bought the Foxpedal, for any of you reading this post who are curious (since it's one of the less well-known ones in the bunch). It's a really nice clean boost. One thing about mine, which maybe is true of all, maybe not, is that the lowest position of the knob is already a pretty substantial boost (in contrast with the MXR Micro Amp that gives you almost exactly unity gain with the knob at zero). This is fine. I'm considering using this one as my "start of the chain" boost that comes in front of my compressor and everything else, and using a Micro Amp at the end of the chain as the final volume boost.

Beware: I picked up a katana boost based on this shootout. To get it to boost your signal well, it’s gotta be about 12 o’clock, and there and anything past that which actually produces an audible difference…there is a lot of pedal noise.

Not at all an easy subject and a very worthwhile subject to feature. I discovered that, contrary to what I previously thought, I don`t much care for boost pedals that are really clean. Adding a boost with some colouration suits my taste much better. I eventually bought a Katana Mini and what tipped the scales is the internal extra boost and top cut switches. With 35 dB available the Katana will whack any amp really hard .... if wanted. As with all things it`s a case of yer pays yer money and makes yer choice. I really like the `shoot out` formula by the way.

My answer to "why don't you just change the EQ on the amp?" is because with a boost pedal, you are adding another circuit to the signal path. The combination of the two items achieves that desired tone. Of course you could add more gain stages to the amp itself but this is why pedals came to be in the first place. Way easier to add a pedal to the chain than add internal components to the amplifier. Also adds flexibility to swap between pedals for different outcomes as we're seeing on these shootout videos.
@davidkieltyka9
@davidkieltyka9 6 жыл бұрын
Pretty much everyone I know uses different pedals for boost functions. Whatever works for you… I like an Archer Ikon for fattening up Strats & Teles. No gain, volume slightly above unity, treble at unity. Also use a DOD 410 to >>reduce

@PoJoWo 6 жыл бұрын
The katana has some really great little extra settings inside too. Great pedal. The ebeneezer mosfet boost seems to suffer the same problem as many fet and mosfet boosts that have massive gain, the volume is a subtractive addition on the end of the circuit so you hear all the noise its amplifying and producing due to the gain in the preceeding design. Part of the magic maybe but you need a good power supply to make sure its not worsened again.

First of all, I LOVE the content you guys put together. This has quickly become one of my favorite channels. THANK YOU for all you do. One comment on the boost pedal shoot out. Boosting gain, naturally, introduces a certain amount of additional LOUDNESS. Often times we perceive something LOUDER to be better quality, or we sort of unconsciously prefer it. If we're to seriously compare 'tone' here, perhaps you could introduce a compressor at the end of the chain to achieve loudness matching between boost pedal on/off. Or perhaps volume match in video/audio post production so we can really observe the change in tone without the difference in level. Maybe in a follow up video! I personally would love to see a straight up tone comparison of the different pedals. Just a thought / opinion!
@northof50now
@northof50now 6 жыл бұрын
Lee, based on what you've been describing, revisit the Tim Pierce pedal. The AMP side of that pedal [I believe] is exactly what you are looking for. With single coil guitars, into a Fender style amp, it fattens and emphasizes the characteristics of the tone more than "boosts." It is definitely an "on all the time" for my Strat into a Fender amp.

After several years of chasing over drives, distortion pedals, etc. for a good solid blues tone- a good boost and compressor pedal turned out to be the key to getting my amp to sound like I wanted- like I kept hearing other amps sound on KZfaq. Not just any boost works with my amp- for some reason most of the boosts I try created this sort of odd frying sound in the background- sounds weird. But I finally found one that worked- but still, just wasn't sounding quiet right. Then I tried putting a compressor pedal between the guitar and the boost pedal- bingo. Clears out a lot of the low-end frequencies that were causing the issue- plus it adds these really cool over tones and harmonics- perfect. I don't like the loss of dynamics but, so far this is the only way I've gotten my amp to produce what I call the "Hendrix" tone- that edge of breakup tone with all the complex harmonics and overtones. Now If there was just some way to maintain this tone without losing my dynamics so much. Blues really counts on dynamics- being able to stress certain notes and play others very softly is really important. If anyone can help- I would appreciate it greatly.

I'm using LPB-1 that was rejected here ;). I love it because it cuts a bit of treble and adds more mids and as much as I love bright cleans sounds I hate bright overdriven sounds. The only cone of LPB-1 is 1 control knob, so you either drive amp with it by putting it in line or making it volume boost for solos and stuff by putting it in a loop.

the thing im not liking about these shootout vids (like the OD vid w/Rob) is that Lee messes with the knobs too much and doesnt give the player a chance to hear a sound he likes so that he can compare the rest with. Either the knobs should all stay at 12 o'clock or they should be pre-setup with a sound the player likes and then start picking "the best".

This isnt a commercial recording you are making, i want more room mic blended in so i get an better idea how it responds in a room, we are guitarists afterall right? Because when you say its had too much added bass end it just seems a little bass shy on my end, the room adding lots of bass naturally we cant hear when closed miked? btw im listening with great monitors in a treated room just for reference, not phone speakers or buds. just my 2 cents you know peace

Two suggestions: 1) if you are only interested in selling pedals to users of tube amps, that's your call but those of us who are happy with our Blues Cubes, Katanas, etc. are still interested in gear reviews and gues what?-- we buy pedals, too. 2) We don't all play strats or teles. . . it would be really helpful to use both a Fender style and a Gibson style guitar in this demo.

EP Booster had too much bass you say?? I presume you turned off the “bass boost” dipswitch?

The EP Booster does not have a "bass boost" dipswitch. And it makes it name on being a bass and treble enhancer. Try it out. It' great, unless you don't want more bass.

Scanl Guitars There’s some dip switch inside the EP though, isn’t there?

Saint Jabroni Apparently the dip switches have varied over the years. Early ones had Bass and Bright switches, later ones have Unity Gain and Vintage.

I agree with Pete that the Vemuram is the most transparent. It sounds so great with the clean tones. Whether it's four times as good as the Katana etc. is another story. I love my T-spark mini though for £40. Best cheap boost maybe? :-)

this was great, but you should do this with flangers, choruses etc. Not always with different types of gain or echo pedals.

I know it's not related to pedals or even a new product, but can you guys do a review or some sort of video with the Orange AD30 amp please?
