@@tony1685 It's interesting that you say Catholics don't keep the ten commandments when the Catechism teaches that we must obey them and if we do not obey them then we must confess and repent (CCC 1858, 1962). In fact, the Catechism explicitly says that we must keep the commandments (CCC 2052).

@@tony1685 Presumably, you are going to disagree with this, but here's how the Catholic Church understood this issue since the apostolic age. St. Paul tells us at Col. 2:16-17 that the ceremonial aspect of the old law is no longer binding for the Christian faithful, explicitly including the "Sabbath day". The word used in this verse to describe it, "shadow" or "skain" is also used for the animal sacrifices of the Old Covenant in Hebrews 10:1. So we know that while we're still bound to the Commandment in keeping a holy Sabbath day, the day specific to the Jews was no longer binding on us; in context, Paul was dealing with Judaizers who were telling Christians they had to be circumcized, continue animal sacrifices, and keep the Sabbath, as some more recent Protestant denominations like the SDAs do (in part) today. In Hebrews 4:9, Paul says there remains a Sabbath rest to be honored. He explains that this has been fulfilled and superseded by a new day in the preceding verses: For he has somewhere spoken of the seventh day in this way, “And God rested on the seventh day from all his works.” And again in this place he said, “They shall never enter my rest.” Since therefore it remains for some to enter it, and those who formerly received the good news failed to enter because of disobedience, *again he sets a certain day,* “Today,” saying through David so long afterward, in the words already quoted, “Today, when you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts.” *For if Joshua had given them rest, God would not speak later of another day.* So, then, there remains a Sabbath rest for the people of God; for whoever enters God’s rest ceases also from his labors as God did from his. So what day are we commanded to meet now that Christ has fulfilled the Sabbath? The first day of the week, Sunday. The day the Lord rose, which is perfectly fitting for this. In Acts 20:7, Luke 24:30-31 we see "the breaking of bread" - meaning the Eucharist - happening in house churches on the first day of the week (see also 1 Cor. 11:18-23). Again, I know this won't convince you, but this is why, historically, Christians worship on Sundays. With the beginning of new "Bible-only" "interpret it yourself" sort of traditions (like the SDAs, who were only founded in 1863) apart from this interpretive tradition, it's understandable why the context and interpretation of the first Church was lost.

Trent horn was one of the biggest reason I'm soon catholic, I was watching an anti catholic video from Mike Winger, down in the comments someone said Trent horn did a good rebuttal on this video, I as a protestant wanted to see what Trent had to say, I absolutely hated it because Trent had valid rebuttals against Mike's claims. I'm a truth chaser, whenever someone says what I believe is false and their claim is valid I instantly rethink what I believe, that night I decided to look more into catholism and be open minded to truth.

@@tony1685 one thing I love about Catholicism is what it teaches me about the Bible. Everyone else quotes this scripture or that scripture and uses it as a proof for what they believe. It's completely confusing because everyone disagrees and they all have their favorite verses to prove their side. It can make the Bible seem nonsensical and untrustworthy, which is the position the Mormon church takes. The Catholic Church has helped me to see all of those verses within the context of the entire Bible. Now, instead of confusing, the Bible is beautiful and harmonious and oh so Catholic.

@@tony1685 also, just want to let you know, I didn't rush it. Coming from 5 generations of Mormonism to become Catholic was a gargantuan decision for me. It took years of study and prayer to bring me to the joy I have received through my baptism, confirmation, and the Eucharist. Start by researching which commandments you think the Catholic Church is breaking. Then study that Catholic teaching/practice in depth to find out if it's really a violation. Spend 3 years in intense study, like I did. Don't rush to judgment.

@@tony1685 It does teach me to keep God's commandments, yes. Through the Catholic Church I have learned about the Ten Commandments in more depth than I had ever dreamed was there. The Ten Commandments are often used by Catholics to examine ourselves before we go to confession. This requires an in depth understanding of the Ten Commandments, because on the surface they seem so basic. They seem legalistic, but the Catholic church teaches beautifully all the ways that we can elevate them to meet not just the requirements of the law of Moses, but all the requirements of the new and eternal covenant that Christ brought to us. I highly recommend googling "ten commandments examination of conscience" to gain a greater understanding of how well you are living the ten commandments. It's helped me be more aware of my actions and how I can better follow God's commandments.

A great and easy (and maybe the most important) way to start is to volunteer at your local parish as a Catechist for their Faith Formation program. For any aspiring Catechists out there who maybe feel a little underwhelmed by their local parish’s catechism program, which is the situation I found myself in at my parish, I actually wrote my own program and got it approved by my parish pastor. Below is syllabus for the program. It includes all of the essentials. It is a year long course, and the sequencing of each session is based on chronological progression, but it’s also in sync with the Liturgical calendar. I’ve used it for a few years now and it has been so fruitful and helps people of all ages. Please feel free to use this same syllabus as a template for your own programs. Thanks so much for this video! I started listening to Catholic Answers and other apologetics on KZfaq when, as a fallen away Catholic, I was hearing so much misinformation to downright hateful comments about Catholicism from Protestants whom I was around. I was born and bred Catholic, attending Catholics schools so I knew what these Protestants were saying was wrong, but didn’t know how to defend it. When I returned to the Church after 25 years away (never “went prot”), I began to make comments (dialoguing??) with anti- Catholics on Catholic sites. I then began making comments on anti-Catholic videos and explaining where they had gone wrong. Bottom line is that I figured that in this day and age, God needed all the warriors He could get. I’m retired and not super healthy so theology degree is not in the cards for me, but I help where I can. I’m happy to see you promoting apologetics in even small ways! God bless you and I have learned so much from you and many others on Catholic Answers. Keep up the good work!

_Protestant vs Catholic message forums_ So, you never talk to atheists, then? This is just an internal dispute in Christianity about _which_ slightly different version of the same basic superstition you'll follow? Do you even talk to _Muslims?_ As an atheist, I shouldn't be surprised by this. But I still am, I guess. This always seems to be about preaching to the choir. After all, I see no reason to think that _any_ god is real. Do you have *one* piece of good evidence, specific enough and in enough detail that I can judge it for myself, that your god is real, rather than just imaginary? Isn't _that_ something you'd need to demonstrate first, before you start arguing over which specific version is best?
@tabandken8562
@tabandken8562 Жыл бұрын
@@Bill_Garthright Actually Protestants and Catholics are VERY different. We both believe born of a virgin, Jesus died for our sins, and have the same New Testament, but that's where it ends pretty much. Everything else is different. We don't agree on many things including the nature of Jesus's Sacrifice. Why would I care about Atheists and their nonbelief? I believe in God and atheists don't. I believe it's impossible for anything to exist without a creator. Nothing can come from nothing. So why didn't I research the Muslim faith? I dud eventually. At the time I didn't know anything about it. I was a believer in God and I believed the bible was True. When I was done bouncing from Protestant Church after Protestant Church, I questioned the bible. Why did I believe it? Where did it come from? How did these books come together? Who or what Church did it? I was starting to wonder if I should even believe Christianity is True. Why should I believe this book just cause it says it's the word of God? I asked my Protestant pastor some of these questions and his answer about where the bible come from how did it come together was too generic, "just the early Christians" "But who where they, which Church? Wouldn't the Church who put the bible together to be the True Church?" Nothing. He wouldn't answer. I left and prayed to God. I told Him I needed the real Truth. I need to know which Church is the True Church and how the bible came together. I need to see other historical documents. I give up if you don't lead me to the Truth with historical proof, not just biblical proof. Everyone distorts the bible to make it say what the want". He answered and very quickly. I didn't have to look. Everything I needed to know fell in my lap. All the historical documents and then I needed to deal with the idea the Catholic Church, the Church everyone convinced me to avoid ends up being the real Truth. So you're an unbeliever. Just because you THINK God doesn't exist doesn't mean you're right. Too bad atheists don't like "anecdotal evidence" because I can give you so many stories of how I've experienced God the Father and Jesus personally. I don't really care. Your loss and He'll be revealing Himself to the world very soon and you'll be given your last chance to accept or deny. Hopefully you accept your own "anecdotal evidence" and accept. Atheists are always in my prayers.

@@tony1685 I'm not an expert on this topic, but I've always thought that the moral command to keep holy the last day of the week was fulfilled by Jesus Christ, such that (as Saint Paul noted in Col. 2:16-17) we are no longer bound to many of the ritual observances of the Jews. Of course, Catholicism preserves the real heart of the command in a way by observing the first day of the week since we are now living in a kind of new creation. Acts 20:7 and 1 Cor. 16:2 gives us clues as to how the first Christians seemed to think the first day of the week was important... I don't think Scripture alone will give us a slam dunk answer, and debates were there in the early stages of the Church. Trent, as an amateur Catholic Apologist, this was a great thing to watch. I got into apologetics a few years ago, and have been studying my craft off and on. I mostly dealt with anti-Catholic protestants in Discord servers or "christian" forums, but that is the breadth of my experience. I've heavily considered making up a youtube channel to help explain Catholic beliefs, where they originate from, and why. You gave me more confidence is doing so. Thank you.

Just want to say that you and the rest of the Catholic Answers team have been a large part how I came to know much of the faith. And you are absolutely right; reading scripture and the CCC will get you surprisingly far. Hope to spread that knowledge to those who otherwise would never have looked up the answers. Many people love video games, so why not turn it into a way to glorify God?

Trent thank you for your work. I could use some direction from anyone that might have insight for my plight. My daughters have suffered a very large betrayal by their mothers live in boyfriend. When i discovered this my world fell apart because i shifted all my attention to my children. I literally gave away my property maintenance business. I only know that forgiveness is key. I decided to consecrate myself to St. Augustine of Hippo and do a pilgrimage from Windsor to Toronto at the St Augustine Monastery. I started training by walking between 20-30k daily with only my 65L backpack. This training led me to the homeless, sick, mentally ill, addicted souls. My faith runs deep and because i have a very stable mental illness and i was homeless when i was a teen myself. I discovered such a great need in our city and very few tending to their needs in a meaningful way. I take interviews and pictures as we panhandle together or eat out of a trash bin over a conversation. Since July 29th i decided to stay on the streets full time and make this the beginning of my pilgrimage. My heart is always to bring people of God together, despite religion. I wholeheartedly trust in our RC faith and i don’t disguise it, but i don’t make that my personal mission. I serve better as a padre or chaplain. I reached out to the area priests but they are overwhelmed with 3 parishes each. I feel alone out here. I see very good hearted protestants out on the streets but unless they live there with us, they miss the point. I don’t see any Catholic layperson as hard as i try. The anti-abortion pickets, the open bible studies, the push pull from all denominations….these don’t help. One person at a time with enough effort put into them, they will come to understand that forgiveness is the key. perhaps one of St. Peters key. (little tongue and cheek). I still want to do my pilgrimage to St. Augustine Monastery and continue to live on alms, but how can I motivate others that so much more help is needed. Especially in our own yards. God bless you if you read this far. J.T.

I haven’t even started RCIA and I’m already engaging in Catholic apologetics as friends and family members are asking me serious questions and presenting hard challenges. I love learning more of the Catholic Church, but I could never go back to school for a degree in this - still trying to pay off loans for my Protestant degrees and raising a family. I’ve wondered if God is leading me to be an apologist to those of my Protestant background, since it gets very little attention (Wesleyan Holiness) from Catholics. Who knows.

I’d actually like to be a Catholic apologist, even though I’m Protestant. Obviously, I won’t be the best one, but I get a certain thrill of learning how the “silly”, “ritualistic”, even absurd looking, Catholic faith actually does have good reasons & theories for why they believe what they do. And even though I don’t believe all those things myself, I take enormous pleasure in sharing that thrill with other people who have the same view I had. It’s an artistic thrill, taking something that seems absurd, & showing how it actually makes a type of sense. I recently find myself saying to other Protestants, “Yeah, I don’t see why RCs make a dogma out of such-&-such, but they do actually have this really interesting argument to support it…”

Hello Mr Trent Horn. I love and appreciate how you calmly and academically defend the faith. Your work has had a huge impact. However, there's one area I would love for you to do an article or broadcast of. It's on the mark of the beast. I feel this is the one area we fail at. The theory feels dangerously antiquated and should probably be revisited. It doesn't make sense that Nero was the beast or that it refers to this time in history. I really hope you can cover this topic. It's extremely important that the church addresses this. I believe Vigano has it right. Thank you and God bless.

I would recommend some of the work of the Thomistic Institute, or the Angelicum`s KZfaq channel (yes they have one), the work of Jonathan Pageau though he is Orthodox crosses with this realm often, Dr.Virveke does alot of good work in this realm as well though he is not a member of the faith. As expected Word on Fire has some good basic resources on the topic of free will as well. Also the Society of Catholic Scientists is an overall good set of sources. The Lumen Christe Institute can be good or the Franciscan University of Steubenville though they tend to be more towards the biblical end of things, as do the Coming Home Network. There is also Inspiringphilosophy who has a few though much of his work is Biblical Archaeology. Then there are two episodes of Catholic Answers Focus dealing with arguments against Free Will, one from the philosophical perspective, and one from the Calvinist perspective. One can counter a topic without doing a direct rebuttal by looking at the more general. Most arguments against free will rely on more impact than substance anyway and some may to be nonfalsifiable because they rely on stating despite what we see and know that there is some unseen other thing that really puppeteers us around so may be like fighting a conspiracy theory. Intellectually honest versions however are similar but are based in philosophy and/or science, these are usually assuming naturalism, so if you can counter those assumptions their arguments will tend to fall apart but be ready to defend on these grounds then, The overall basis of most anti-free will arguments is a stance called determinism, so if you find good counters for that (I had some for awhilr but I am rusty on the topic), you can cut the foundation out from anti-free will arguments. Remember also, some KZfaq channels just want views so they fill themselves with the stuff that their niche may want to hear. Go with first principles if you can and build up from there. In the long-run it is best to do that as your structure doesn`t rely on one given argument. Finally, check through my archives espescially under Spread the Word of God`s Truth, Nature, Dimensional Shift, and maybe Mysteries Unknown, if in doubt, check Light of the Lord as I tend to dump anything really good in there anyway. These are good for general study in the topic, but if you need anything specific, let me know and I will find some more specific resources.

One thing that I found a bit alarming however is that he and Mr.Pageau both keep bringing up something about human beings being not a singular consciousness but a collection of conscious agents. Now maybe they are hinting at the passions or it is on some more superficial level from the intellect and will or it is how the will and intellect interact with different phantasms or something, but, I can easily see that spiralling down many bad paths. Reading about Bruno Giodano just made me evaluate things more stringently and that idea passing around that circle seems like something to be cautious about. Of course it was way above my head, so hopefully I am being more cautious than I need to be. Rather that than going off a spiritual cliff.

I have often wondered why apologetics isn't part of the part of the preparation process for confirmation. Since the normal procedure in our church is to separate the sacraments of baptism (for infants) and confirmation (for adults) why do we not require a more rigorous preparation for the latter? I taught in a Catholic School, and nowhere in the official religious curriculum for junior high through high school was there anything at all provided to defend their faith. Heck, I had to take seminars to maintain my status as a catechist and in some cases I was appalled by poor quality of explaining our faith by diocesan officials (priests) to fellow Catholics! So what I guess I'm saying is that an important way to start is teaching the truths of Catholicism to Catholics.

The problem I have with Catholic apologists, they form their opinions and theology on sources outside of the scriptures. Then what ends up happening, they take their formed theology, and bring it with them into the scriptures. What ends up happening, without realizing it, they are actually molding the scriptures around their already formed theology. Ephesians 2:20 uses past tense, already laid. Paul did not have in mind, one to form their theology on a foundation outside of scriptures. This also explains why Roman Catholic apologists lack discernment when reading church history.

You cannot underestimate the danger of being an apologist, ohhh boy the destruction you could bring if not done right, Id reccomend looking up to the Catholic answers apologists, Brant Pitre and Scott Hahn etc. There are a lot of Christian apologists who do very well on the intellectual side but butcher the other side of things, some do it in big ways some in smaller ways. Some examples are David wood and Sam Shamoun.

Unfortunatelly in my country apologetics is basically dead. Neverthless I was inspired by your work (and also from other christian apologists) and followed your example doing apologetics on social media.

I’m seeing this video, and it’s like God might be calling me to be an apologist. -_- I would make an awful apologist! Someone recently walked into our Bible study class I was leading at church with the intent of convincing people to become apologists. If I see this a 3rd time somewhere else I might finally take the plunge. But! I’m fully conscious that I would be awful at it.

I've wanted to do this for a long time, and even started on youtube 6 years ago (when the New Atheists were ascendant) as uncommon_sense. I also wanted to as a cradle-Catholic as all the good ones are converts 😉. My problem is that while I know the Bible and Catechism well, I can't remember or cite passages. I still have plenty to talk about but always now can't due to lack of self belief

@yajunyuan7665 2 жыл бұрын
The way you memorise the citations is to have online discussions with people, when you get challenged you will need to find the references. When you receive the same challenges multiple times you will become familiar enough to cite the passages from memory.

_My problem is that while I know the Bible and Catechism well, I can't remember or cite passages._ Bible passages mean nothing to us atheists. Or did you just plan to talk to the people who already agree with you? Is this only about poaching from other denominations of Christian, then?
@JanSzafranski
@JanSzafranski Жыл бұрын
@@Bill_GarthrightNot at all... atheists often cite Bible passages (usually OT/ Leviticus) to prove some point, which would require a counter or context quote to validate/invalidate what the atheist cited. And no... 'poaching' is of no interest: this would be evangelising... I'm more interested in apologetics: answering questions/criticisms

Instead of looking into denominations or deciding which denomination fits best, SEEK a relationship and understanding from God with prayer and fasting. Ask HIM to show you whats real and whats not, for true history and doctrine, come out of all forms of religion and into a true relationship with God matthew 7:22 Many will say to Me in that day, ‘Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Your name, cast out demons in Your name, and done many wonders in Your name?’ And then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness!’ - intimacy/charity is the foundation.

Hi Trent and Trent's fans, I hope you'll allow for this, since it's kind of sort of related to your video I feel. I am a recent graduate with a BA in both philosophy and theology, and along the lines of what you've been discussing, I've started a small KZfaq channel a few months ago. I decided to start by doing faith-related reviews of VR video games, as that was becoming very popular at the time, and it seemed a simple thing to do while I finished studying to start to put some content out there. My goal is to actually move into more strictly philosophical and theological content, while keeping a mix of culturally relevant stuff too, like you do here. Aside from this, I am also a very amateur fiction writer, obviously of a Catholic style. I've actually been releasing my first story on my KZfaq channel in audio form with text/subtitles, but it is really hard to be seen unless you have a robust social media presence. I however can't stand social media and struggle to use it. All I have for myself is a Twitter, but I try to stay off of it. So really I just wanted to say, if anyone is maybe into checking out some fiction, the story is called Beyond Lumina on the channel Nerds Templar. It is a space fantasy story, and each episode is about 10 written pages. Sorry for pandering on your channel, Trent, but as you've said in a previous video about becoming a writer, I'm trying to get some experience, but it's really hard with no feedback! And no hard feelings if you decide to delete this.
