www.workingwithbrian.com - How to Become a Fighter Pilot in the Navy
In this video, I will talk with you about the prerequisites you will need to get a commission and ultimately become a fighter pilot in the Navy.
It's not easy! You will have to have your college degree, get a commission in the Navy, and then compete all the way through pilot training for the opportunity to fly jets. There are many different kinds of aircraft in the Navy. Most of them are NOT jets, and the Navy needs pilots for all its aircraft. This means that you will be competing against your peers for the few coveted Jet spots that the Navy has available.
So, where do you start? Talk to your local Navy recruiter and let them know you want to get a commission in the Navy to fly. If you haven't been to college, you'll need to figure that part out in advance.
Most importantly, if you really want to be a fighter pilot in the Navy, don't let anyone steer you where you don't want to go. If you really want to fly, be adamant about that and stick to your guns.
Good Luck! Fly Navy!

Hey all, there have been many questions about eyesight here... . You do need 20/20 to initially get designated as a fighter pilot. Your eyesight may degrade to as poor as 20/70 AFTER you have your wings, and they will allow you to continue flying if you're correctable. However, if you degrade to worse than that, you will be NPQ'ed. (Not Physically Qualified) NOW - They WILL allow surgery now with regard to eyesight for both correcting once you're winged, and also to get you to 20/20 for designation. The Navy will pay for your eye surgery if you're already in, but not before you actually join. Hope that helps!

Douggy, in case you're still getting questions the current NAMI standard is 20/40 uncorrected, correctable to 20/20. Plenty of guys in my class got glasses on their API physical. Once you're an SNA, it can slip to 20/100, correctable to 20/20. Pilot shortage, gotta drop the physical standards I suppose so we don't bleed out as many good guys. LASIK and PRK are good to go.

Good stuff here and spot on for what to expect. He didn't mention time increments, however. In my day (early 90s) it was 15 weeks of AOCS (pilot boot camp), 12 months of primary flight (to get winged), and another 18 months in designated aircraft training. Then, on to active duty.

If you want to be an officer and you're still in high school, play sports such as basketball, football, soccer, track and field, swimming etc. OCS, the Service Academies, and ROTC recruiters want to know if you have a well rounded background, specifically if you played sports. Sports teaches young people teamwork, camaraderie/esprit de corps, leadership skills, and by the time they graduate from high school they would have been already in athletic shape to pass first class on the PFT - physical fitness test - push-ups, pull-ups (for USMC), sit-ups, and running.

Check with an FAA flight surgeon, opthamologist, or optometrist to see if you have full colorvision. If you are colorblind, you won't be accepted to any of the officer programs; aviation MOS or non-aviation MOS. You need full colorvision to see the landing lights and the navigation lights of the plane in front of you. I wanted to be military pilot also and I had 20/20 vision at the time but I found out I was red-green colorblind at MEPS when I was enlisting in the Marine Corps reserves.

I have a certain amount of time to do it, because of the age limit. I will likely have to spend 1-2 years in community before going back to 4 year, then 2 years in OTCS.

If you make it through OCT and then take basic pilot training, your grades and performance will determine what class of vehicle you will fly. You have a preference, but most of the time it isn't up to you and will rely on what the airforce or navy needs at the time.

Do well in school. Get into and graduate college needs to be your number one goal. Unless you go to an academy, you have to pay for corrective eye surgery yourself. Good luck!
@rhinodriver2899
@rhinodriver2899 6 жыл бұрын
Your eye sight needs to be at least 20/40 correctable to 20/20 to start training. Only certain refractive surgeries are eligible so before you medically ruin your chances forever, speak with an officer recruiter to find out which procedures are currently accepted, they change more often than you'd think.

Get some flight time at your local FBO. If you can, get your private license. This is the first thing the Navy has its students do. The local FBO will grade you and if you aren’t suited they will weed you out there. While you are in high school, get the highest grades and be well rounded: join a few high school clubs, get involved in charity work in your community so you can list this on your application to the academy or OCS. Well rounded, high grades and concerned about the community are all good application bullets... then any and all flight time you can get prior to training will help you pass the difficult flight syllabus. Good luck.

Should you get your pilots license in high school to get a leg up on some of the other people. I would like to take the ROTC route in college and see if I can fly some jets of aircraft carriers. Would I be a good idea as well to use a simulator on a computer just to learn all the dials and stuff that's in the aircraft? Also, should you get eye surgery before or after going to sign up, is there a special type that I would need?
@BelowMinimums

It doesn't hurt to get your pilot's license as early as possible. I'm getting my PPL now and I'm 18. I would assume it helps you get a leg up on anybody who doesn't have their license yet. Who would you rather choose for a flying job, somebody whose has their license for 4 years or someone with no flight experience?

I was an average student in my first two years of high school and played football, right now I'm not to bright in math and I'm getting mixed advices from teachers, Counselor and parents, I really want to go to OCS. I'm attempting to get a personal tutor for math and majority of people are telling me "you can't" there really discouraging me but I try to ignore it. But basically I'm and average student with a 3.0 and no ACT/SAT, ASVAB scores and I'm not in any clubs, I'm wondering what should I do for my situation. What clubs should I join, what should I do for my math skills and also I'm going into Algebra 2 for my senior year

@@Pook162 If you are 17 you can still go to a flight academy and then graduate with a BA. Although any college works

Engineering is always good, it makes it somewhat easy to understand the engines in the jets or aircraft. That's what the best option is in my opinion.

You need to be commissioned by your 27 1/2 birthday to be eligible.

mr jakafill 14 You go to college, join NROTC or wait and go into OCS. Either way you ask to get a flight slot and they will train you. You just need a commission from the Navy and the main pre-requisite for that is a college degree.

Do you have to kill people? I know, its a stupid question, but its important to me. I want to fly jets, but I don't want to have anything bad on my heart once I retire from the military.
@xXsilentvatoXx

If you join the military without realizing that you might have to take life you are in the wrong profession the military is design to take life no two ways about it. If you want to fly jets you have a high probability to take life because fighter pilots drop bombs and shoot down other jets if you don't feel like you can do that fly cargo planes or fly helicopters but for helicopters your gunners will kill people if necessary so your option would any plane other than fighter jets

xXsilentvatoXx Thanks for the reply. I've been thinking, and I don't think the military is for me. I was reading, and apparently you only clean bathrooms and take out the trash for the first two years, and you don't make much money. That's just what I read, I could be wrong. Thanks again for the reply.

Depends on the type of Aircraft you fly, yes you will have to kill people.
@xXsilentvatoXx
@xXsilentvatoXx 8 жыл бұрын
Paul Cooney i would say very low one because the training and two the aircraft itself has built in countermeasures to keep you safe. As a guy who is also looking into this career my advice is just do it you might regret it later in life theres so many other planes that it will fit what you want to do which is fly good luck.
