(15:30) Ever wondered what it takes to be a forensic genetic genealogist solving criminal cold cases? Dr. Claire Glynn joins me in this week to talk about the investigative genetic genealogy field, criminal cold cases solved, and the new certificate program she has developed at the Henry C. Lee (notable for his work on the OJ Simpson case and many others) College of Criminal Justice and Forensic Sciences at the University of New Haven.

Fascinating. My wife was adopted, never knew either parent. Earlier last year I really started digging into her DNA results. I literally spent the last 10 months building out her biological family tree and matching cousins. It took me almost 5 months of research and building out trees, researching papers, going down one branch of a tree, and then backtracking and going down another branch before I was able to come up with who I believed is her biological mother. I didn't even have a DNA match for the mother. What I had was a close relative who turns out to be a sister to her mother.

I have been researching my genealogy since I was a child and the advancement in solving cold cases as well as finding biological parents or family. I grew up watching my parents search for his younger siblings adopted out. He was always told he would never find them all. The hurt on his face was that of a child and when they found the last one I wished my great aunt was alive to scream he found them all!!! Yes this was my great aunts answers they gave little, so I have helped a few I know to find their biological parents. It’s not easy but rewarding to answer questions. It’s really a guard your heart but don’t give up kind of thing. The truth is not always happy but you know. Sometimes just knowing is as far as they want, but now they have the option to take a break and go forward.

I’m so excited about this!…online classes are available!…So disappointing to find need a bachelors as a prerequisite. I have some college credits and a lot of genealogy knowledge but still can’t enroll in this. Hope those who have the prereq take advantage of this certificate program.

What a shame that this, my dream, is currently out of my league. While I'm currently completing a Bachelor Degree I will be blocked by the fees. As of 2022 with the total of 12 units involved in this course and each unit costing $1,020, that will equate to $12,120 in order to complete these studies. By the time I convert that to Australian Dollars I would be looking at paying around $18,000. Financial brick walls are just a frustrating as genealogical brick walls. One can only hope that Australia up's the anti and develops it's own training in this field within universities that will be accessible through HECS repayments.

I'm from Sacramento and was around seven or eight when the East Side Rapist as he was known by the locals. I know, the media dubbed him as the East "Area" Rapist, but us locals referred to him as the East Side Rapist. Back then I was 9 years old through 12. People were panicked and parent's were keeping a close eye on their children.

I did this with my Grandfather, he was adopted in the 1930s and we had no paperwork, no trail. I used his and my DNA matches to form a tree and found his biological 1/2 brother about two years ago. Found out that my Grandfather was a part of the skeleton in the family closet. Anyway I didn't know what to call this process and now I do. I am hooked and looking to see where how I can help others.

I have a strong background in molecular biology and DNA research. When genetic genealogy came around I jumped in with both strands and resolved a number of issues in my family tree. Because the generation above me have all passed however I have been waiting for some forensic DNA techniques to become available for at-home genetic genealogy. Specifically, I collected some hair strands (with follicle) that belonged to my deceased mother. I would love to be able to have her DNA sequence analysis. Any thoughts?

I’ve helped solve two adoptions. One confirmed by birth certificate the other confirmed by name. Working on NPE in my husbands mothers tree, narrowed down a set of common ancestors, haven’t got around to researching in depth on that. I have 3 brick walls in my own tree, and I am working to solve those as well 3-4th generation back. All immigrants. It is so much harder for me to look at my own tree and make discoveries then it is for me to look at other peoples trees and make discoveries. Why is that I wonder lol Constantly building trees, adding dna match lines, and searching records. Love it so much.

Disappointed that a bachelors is required. Especially since there are current IGGs already, without such. Require a biology class instead. This is gatekeeping the course to graduate students, it’s a shame.
