Most new developers, junior developers, and especially those who are "self-taught" battle with confidence issues. Other developers come off as more experienced and get the job done much faster.
And there you are, struggling...or so it seems.
In this video, I want to share 7 TIPS on how you can grow in confidence as a developer. This advice is practical and comes from my 7 years of professional software engineering experience as well as having battled with the exact same issues.
Let me know if you find it helpful.

Great video Travis, it's truly helpful to have someone speak candidly about this. I think a big problem with imposter syndrome is the environment. There's a lot of smart cookies in the fields of computer science, software development, IT, etc. You just can't help but feel levels below everyone because most other people that are in these fields already have some experience or interest in the field which are often foreign and slightly more complex concepts. And if you're someone who's a little behind, it makes it seem like they were supposed to know all of these concepts already.

He killed me when he said, "We don't like you" 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂. Very true Travis, I feel like the reluctance to hard tasks as newbie has especially to do with not wanting to look incompetent, which is the exact mindset that keeps out skills at a lower level.

My notes Addvice From a Programmer kzfaq.info/get/bejne/o66oksh0nt22mY0.html 1. Ask Questions Don't be afraid to ask question. If you're in a team their are probably others that have the same Questions. In the long run it will save you time. Make sure you understand the assignment. 2. Read the Documentation Don't just google everything. Get a high level overview of the coding task your working on, be it a hook into the platform you're using or a particular library you want to use. Take notes and write some sudo code to get a feel for how things are going to flow. 3. Self-Confidence Don't get down on yourself. Remember some of the projects you have completed, roll up your sleves, and get busy learning something new! 4. Think Conceptually Most programming languages are very similar and they want you to be able to write code in their language. If you look at the problem and think, I will need a loop and an if statement, all you need to do is look at the documentation on how to do a loop and an if. Look for creating functions or using previously built libraries or even previously created functions you've written. 5. Try Hard Tasks Try doing things you don't know. Put in the time and learn. 6. Share What You know Creating a blog or a KZfaq video on what you've learned. It will reinforce those skills in you and you can use it as Notes for yourself.

The real way you build confidence in your programming abilities is by building more and more successful solutions to problems you are given. The mechanics of that can vary. I would argue that getting the info needed is the learning process and going to the experts may take longer but you get a better grounding in your understanding. Of course asking questions of team members to fill in minor details is good too.

Hey Travis, I'm a rising junior in college planning to become a software architect once I spend some years initially as a software developer. I came across one of your videos on KZfaq a few days ago where you recommended Python, AWS, and Linux as a set of new languages to become a software engineer in 2022. I was wondering if these would be safe skills to go for if my ultimate goal is to become a software architect ultimately, and I plan to join a company as a software developer intern next year. Although I'm expected to learn Java and C++ over next few years in college. Any suggestion is appreciated!

Elon Musk said knowing why is the key to learning. That definitely helps me. When I understand why I am doing something then I can see the big picture and the path to move forward. Society seems to treat the why as taboo. All you need is who, what, where, and when. You don't need to know why. Just do as you're told. That always backfires on everyone involved. The why is treated as being pesky and some believe you really don't need to know why. Those people's lives are usually a mess and/or they have a narcissistic personality that likes to limit information so they can keep the upper hand.
