I did my training through JTL, I would recommend them to others. The hardest thing is finding an employer, however if you have already done the JTL test when applying for an apprenticeship role at least your an the right path. From memory the companies that take you on have certain obligations regarding training which i believe is important in order to gain a variety of experience

Do you need to go college and get a level 2 qualification or have experience before applying for these electrical apprenticeships or can you go straight for an apprenticeship?
@ryanm9042
@ryanm9042 Жыл бұрын
@@jojomp_459 Apprenticeships will cover the the full requirements from level 2 to fully qualified electrician no experience would be needed however if you did have any experience it could make you stand out from others which may be needed due to the high amount of applicants for the amount of jobs. I'm sure your local college tutors would be able to point you in the right direction of who takes on the most apprentices in the area and so on 👍

Hey Gaz, any chance of a video showing how the different options and routes to become an electrician is Scotland.

Only route in Scotland is to do it through Scottish electrical charitable training trust (SECTT) the apprenticeships are ran by then at all the colleges in Scotland You must find an employer who is recruiting an electrical apprentice they will then do the registration part of you doing the apprenticeship If you have relevant experience (2 year minimum) and your employer reckons you have what it takes they can put you through and adult traineeship - exact same as apprenticeship but less days at college as the practical experience you already need to have. They also do accrediting certification, this is where you have a nvq level 3 from another country (Rest of uk included) and c&g or equivalent qualification which the asses and then get you to make a portfolio based on previous experience. Once you have done that you go for the fica (final integrated competence assessment) this allows you electrician gold card of passed then after gaining experience the aca (advance competence assessment ) can be done getting you approved electrician status Best way is to contact all electrical company in your area asking if and when they are taking on, send cv and cover letter expressing your interest in the trade and how eager you are Also register with sectt and do the pre-assessment they have In Scotland you can do pre-apprenticeship courses to gain experience Typical route roads map Apply with employers Gain employment Start college apprenticeship- 4 years Whilst at college complete svq level 3 portfolio based on site experience( around 5/6 different jobs per year of apprenticeship) Complete college in 3rd year Do 1 year site experience with another week at college Once 4 years is complete attend fica information night and after this your employer can apply for you to do fica Pass fica (electrician) Do a further minimum 2 years site experience running teams / sites/jobs /3ph etc….. Apply to sit aca, pass and become “approved” You can find all these details on select,sectt websites Hope this helps @efixx not sure of your vast knowledge of Scottish routes but that is my input

Much harder in Scotland as only way to be recognised by SJIB as an electrician and to get gold card is to complete an apprenticeship from school or do an adult apprenticeship through a company. I know loads of guys who have been scammed into doing fake courses that promise you an electrician qualification . The 4week wonder courses aren't valid up here luckily as in my opinion you need 4 years to be able to call yourself an electrician aka time served . These quick courses seem to be an English thing with the JIB

Question from a year 2 electrical apprentice here. Why does the ‘gold card’ have an expiration date? What are you required to do when it is expired?

As a JTL year 4 apprentice I can say from experience that generally JTL are OK, you will be assigned a “Training Officer” when you start, your progress will depend heavily on how good your college is and how efficiently the college deals with JtL. Some TO’s are much better than others but I’ve dealt with some really frustrating ones that are very patronising and slow when it comes to making progress, I found myself constantly trying to push forward and get my TO to get things done because I’d be ignored a lot of time. JTL are obsessed with forcing apprentices to watch and complete diversity and inclusive courses online or else you won’t be able to progress with your electrical career. The good part is that you don’t have to pay anything towards it, just give them your time and find an employer that can hopefully cover all types of electrical work so that you can get your NVQ done.
